Chapter 66: insecure jealous girlfriend

Dalton was golfing with the twins at his exclusive, luxurious golf club when Aiden arrived with a food delivery bag. And Maya wasn’t with him.

"Again?" Dalton poured his disappointment into his golf club, whacking the ball so hard that it soared through the air and landed far away.

"Why are you acting so aggressively?" River asked with amusement.

Aiden gave a laugh. "Our big bro’s girl doesn’t want to see his face."

"Are you and Maya having issues? She doesn’t seem like herself lately," Oliver said, shooting the ball with tenderness and grace. The ball rolled smoothly into the hole.

Oliver grinned. "How many strokes do I have?" he asked the boy who was keeping track of the scores.

"The majority," the boy replied.

"Yeah!" Oliver pumped his fist into the air. "I won!"

River snorts "You won because Dalton is preoccupied with his relationship problems, and I’m not very energetic because I’ve been abstinent from sex since Dalton took my money and company."

Oliver rolled his eyes at his twin. "Excuses! You sound like a sore loser."

"Lunch has arrived! I’m starving!" River exclaimed, rubbing his stomach.

"Maya has turned Aiden into a deliveryman," River joked.

"And I love it," Aiden responded proudly.

"But why didn’t Maya join you? I’ve missed hanging out with my sister-in-law," River whined.

"I think she’s very busy; a sous chef’s duties are very challenging," Oliver stated.

"Nope. She was actually on break when I went to pick up the food from the restaurant. She simply does not want to see Dalton."

Dalton grumbled. Aiden was right. Maya had been avoiding him since the day he attended the charity gala with Charlotte. Her responses to his messages were brief, and she sounded cold when they spoke on the phone. She always replies, but she never opens her door when he knocks.

They proceeded into the lounge area to eat their lunch, but Dalton was too stressed to eat.

"Bro, you look like a sulking little boy," River poked fun at him. "Identify the problem and deal with it."

Aiden groaned. "Charlotte is the issue. Did you see the picture of her and Dalton she posted on Instagram? What woman would be okay with seeing another woman all over her man?"

"Charlotte is just acting like a needy little sister. She means no harm; she’s been this way since we were kids" Oliver defends her.

Aiden huffs in response. "She’s been in love with Dalton since she was 13."

"No, she isn’t," Oliver denies on her behalf.

Aiden pulls up Charlotte’s Instagram. "Does this photo look like regular siblings taking a picture? Charlotte is all over Dalton as if she were his girlfriend."

"It looks normal to me; you’re the one being paranoid," Oliver scowled at him. freeweɓnovel-cøm

Aiden laughed. "You’re unbelievable. Are you really so blind by her human rights activism? That she-devil trapped me in the closet when we were thirteen, knowing I was claustrophobic. I nearly went into cardiac arrest from the panic episodes I had after being in there for hours."

"She was young and didn’t know you were claustrophobic," Oliver said as he strongly defended Charlotte.

"She knew! Nana Rose told her all about it after my first therapy session. Stop defending her. Do you know why she did that? It was because I brought a female classmate to play video games with Dalton and me. That wasn’t a prank; it was attempted murder!" Aiden’s eyes turned lethal, and his fist clenched.

River jerked his hand between them, protecting his twin brother. "Easy, you two. I adore Charlotte, but I once caught her admiring Dalton’s ripped chest. Maybe Aiden is right."

Oliver shook his head, choosing not to believe it. "Charlotte is a wonderful, sweet person. She didn’t mean to hurt you, and she is not in love with Dalton."

"Suit yourself; I’m done with this conversation." Aiden focused on his lunch.

While they were fighting, Dalton was contemplating ways to fix the rift between Maya and him. "I bought her flowers the last time she was upset with me," he strokes his chin. "Do you think it will work a second time?"

"Bro, it won’t work if the underlying issue is still present in your house. " Aiden scoffed, still agitated.

Oliver shifted in his seat. "I thought you said you were done with the argument."

Aiden growled, "Oliver, I don’t understand why you are sucking up to Charlotte."

"Because she’s a good person and a heroine, traveling the world saving victims of abuse," Oliver replied.

"Shut the hell up, you two!" Dalton shouted.

Oliver and Aiden quickly fell silent.

"I’ve lost my appetite," Dalton walked out on them.

Maya had returned from work, feeling both emotionally and physically drained. She craved the warmth of her bed and a good movie to lift her spirits, as she had been smiling less lately.

As she walked into the living room, someone called out her name.

"Maya."

She lifted her head in response, gearing her gaze toward Dalton, his siblings, and, of course, Charlotte.

Even from a distance, Maya could sense the intensity of Dalton’s probing gaze, causing her heart to thud in response. She averted her eyes from him.

"You are finally home," Charlotte exclaimed, taking a deep breath. "I would like to apologize to you in front of everyone."

Maya’s frown deepened as a nagging feeling washed over her. What is Charlotte up to?

"Apologize for what? My pickup truck? You’ve already fixed it, and that was all the apology I needed." Maya’s jaw tightened. She was trying to control her anger, but she was losing the battle.

"What happened to your pickup truck?" Dalton asked, concerned.

"Charlotte bumped into it yesterday, and the headlights cracked. But she fixed it, so it’s all good now," Maya gave a thumbs up.

"If that’s settled, I want to go to my room," she added with a yawn.

Charlotte suddenly let out a sob. She was crying, and there were actual tears. Maya’s mouth dropped in shock.

"Charlotte," Oliver rushed to comfort her. Charlotte rested her head on his chest and sobbed, soaking his shirt.

Aiden raised his hands in mock surrender. "Here we go. Drama queen."

"Maya doesn’t like me, and I’m not sure what I did to her," Charlotte said, her voice rising as she cried.

Maya rubbed her forehead, clearly stunned.

Aiden let out a derisive laugh. "Like seriously, you are really crying?"

"Maya thinks I want to steal Dalton from her, so she’s been acting cold towards me," Charlotte exclaimed through her tears.

"Dalton is my cousin." It’s terrible that anyone would think I have romantic feelings for him."

Maya stiffened.

"I sent Maya pictures of Dalton and me at the charity gala and asked her to choose one that would be appropriate for me to post on Instagram. However, it seems that this made her feel jealous. Maya, I did not intend to make you feel that way. " Charlotte then approached Maya and squeezed her hands. "I can be very clingy with Dalton. I forgot that we’re all grown up now, and he has a girlfriend who might feel jealous seeing how affectionate we are with each other. Maya, I am sorry I did not invite you to come along with us to the bar. That was awful of me. My excitement got the best of me. And I’ll never bring Dalton breakfast again."

"I will be more mindful from now on. I apologize for making you feel insecure and jealous." Her words sounded so sincere that everyone would believe her.

"Dalton," Charlotte said as she turned to him, "I apologize for making your girlfriend angry with you for the second time. The flowers you brought for her, according to the maids, were meant as an apology for going to the bar with me and staying out late, right? And for bringing you breakfast? If me being in this house is hurting your relationship, Dalton. I will leave," The tears on her face were convincing."

"Wow," Maya muttered under her breath. Charlotte should have pursued a career as a criminal lawyer instead of a human rights lawyer; she was skilled at manipulation, gaslighting, and deceit.

"No, you don’t need to leave. This is your cousin’s house, and I’m just a girlfriend," Maya said, her voice cracking. When she looked at Dalton, a searing agony rose in her heart.

Charlotte suddenly hugged her. "Let’s get along, sister-in-law."

Maya nodded. "Sure." She pulled away.

"It’s all settled; the misunderstanding is resolved. We’re playing Scrabble, and you can join us, Maya," Oliver offered.

"I apologize; I will join you next time. I’m worn out and need to rest. Good night, everyone." Maya rushed to her room. When she hit the bed, she screamed into her pillow. Fury pierced her chest like needles. Charlotte had led everyone to believe she was an insecure, jealous girlfriend.
