Chapter 56: Mother in law

Beatrice is like Soraya and Valentina merged together. She is childish, annoying, and excessively rude to almost everyone she encounters, probably except her sons. It has been three days since she moved into the mansion, and Maya has successfully avoided her like the plague. She hopes it continues to be that way. She can’t stand that woman.

Maya had already served breakfast to the brothers and was on her way to Dalton’s room to bring him his usual coffee and a healthy smoothie. Dalton dislikes eating breakfast and has been leaving the meals Maya prepares for him untouched, despite promising her that he would eat them. Therefore, Maya decided to make healthy smoothies for him to ensure he gets something nutritious in his stomach besides caffeine.

When Maya entered the room, she immediately spotted Beatrice sitting on the bed with her legs crossed, while Dalton looked at her with an ice-cold expression on his face.

"Breakfast is here," Maya announced.

Dalton’s facial expression relaxed upon seeing Maya.

As per routine, Maya handed Dalton the smoothie before his coffee.

"Thanks," he said, gulping down the smoothie before taking a sip of the coffee.

He turned to his mother. "I will wire you the money. Learn how to manage, because I won’t be giving you any more money until three months from now."

"What? Son?" Beatrice exclaimed as she got up from the bed, her eyes flashing with anger. "Your mother is an expensive woman, son. The money you are giving me can’t even cover my luxurious needs for a week."

Dalton’s jaw tightened. "I don’t care."

Dalton pivoted his gaze back to Maya. "Could you please walk me to my car?" Dalton gently requested. Maya followed Dalton, leaving Beatrice in the room, still furious about the money issue.

Dalton pulled Maya in for a deep kiss that left her knees jelly and her lips craving for more.

"Maya, I’ll see you in the afternoon, right?"

Maya smiled. "Yeah, sure. What do you want for lunch?"

"Anything you cook is fine by me, my love," Dalton said softly, making Maya feel a flutter in her stomach.

"See you soon," he said as he got into his car.

Maya waved at Dalton as he drove away. She wheeled around, only to bump into someone. It was Beatrice, wearing a stoic, snobbish expression.

"How can I help you, Beatrice?" Maya asked.

Beatrice sneers at her. "We are not on a first-name basis, young lady. Didn’t your parents teach you about respect?"

Maya sighs, feeling irritated. "Then how should I address you?"

"Mrs. Black," Beatrice replies.

"Oh, you kept your first husband’s name? Were your other husbands okay with that?" Maya’s curiosity got the better of her.

"Yes?" Beatrice snapped at her.

"Sorry, I shouldn’t have pried," Maya apologized.

"I learned that you are the self-appointed cook of the family. Make me Raspberry Pain au Chocolat for breakfast," Beatrice said to Maya as if she were one of the servants.

Maya dug her nails into her palm, striving to maintain a calm demeanor. "Okay, I will cook that for you," she replied. She decided to overlook Beatrice’s rudeness and prepare her breakfast out of respect for her being Dalton’s mother.

Maya strutted past her and went into the kitchen. It took her just 20 minutes to prepare the Raspberry Pain au Chocolat for Beatrice. Maya then instructed one of the helps to serve Beatrice.

Maya quickly hit the shower to take her bath, as she was running late for her sous chef job at the restaurant. After a month and a few days, she had finally returned to being a proper chef.

As Maya was walking to her pickup truck to drive to the restaurant, Beatrice decided to be a menace.

"Maya!" Beatrice screamed from the dining hall. Maya ground her teeth, completely infuriated. She swiveled back and stormed into the dining hall to respond to Beatrice’s call.

"How can I help you, Mrs. Black?" Maya plastered a fake smile on her face.

"I’ve changed my mind. I wanted a German apple pancake for breakfast, not this. So go cook that quickly for me; I’m so famished." Beatrice pushed the plate of raspberry pain au chocolat that Maya had made for her away. It nearly fell off the table, but Maya briskly caught the plate before it could drop.

Maya glanced at the half-eaten Raspberry Pain au Chocolat. Beatrice was just trying to provoke her, to get under her skin, but Maya refused to give her the reaction she wanted. She maintained her calm composure, even though she was seething with anger inside. "If you want a German Apple Pancake, go ask the servants. There’s a good cook among them who can make it for you. I’m off to work," Maya managed to say politely.

"Off to work?" Beatrice shot Maya a mocking look. "You work? I thought you were just a pretty freeloader, another mouth for my son to feed."

Maya’s anger surged to a berserk point, but she still kept her cool. "I’m a sous chef at a five-star restaurant, and I need to go to work."

Maya attempted to leave.

"Wow, impressive," Beatrice invent a yawn. "You must be earning a lot. You should be living on your own then, instead of staying with my son and doing all the duties of a wife when he hasn’t put a ring on your finger."

Maya bit her lower lip. God help her, she desperately wanted to snap at this woman. "Well, you should direct that question to your son."

But Beatrice wasn’t finished with her provocation. "I wouldn’t be surprised if Dalton used his connections to get you that sous chef job. You are undeserving of that position."

Beatrice’s sharp words made Maya feel as though cold water had been splashed on her. Her eyes narrowed with rage

"Judging by how you can’t take your eyes off the remaining raspberry pain au chocolat on the plate, it’s clear, you know why I’m a sous chef, Mrs. Black. Stop the childishness and eat it, like you are dying to," Maya finished with a smirk.

"Have a good day, mother-in-law," she said, giving a little wave before storming off.
