Chapter 24: First day part 2

"So, you are the one who stocks all these groceries?" Maya asked Nana Rose as they walked around the pantry, picking up the ingredients for the Belgian waffles. She would never stop talking about the pantry; it was even bigger than some supermarkets she had been to.

"No," Nana Rose said emphatically. "That would require a lot of work. The supermarket chain that Dalton bought is responsible for supplying the pantry with groceries."

"Oh, wow," Maya marveled. Even though her stepfather is rich and she lives in a mansion..., well, a basement of a mansion, she is still amazed by how filthy rich Dalton is. His wealth is astonishing; he has enough money to buy big companies. It’s unbelievable.

Maya tied her hair into a bun and put on a beautiful apron she had found in the pantry. She washed her hands and began making the Belgian waffles.

Nana Rose offered to stay and keep Maya company. She sat at the kitchen island, enjoying the apple juice Maya had made for her.

Maya picked up a large bowl to mix the dry ingredients. As she began whisking together the flour, powdered sugar, and salt, she asked Nana Rose with concern, "Is your elder sister doing okay?" She recalled Nana Rose had left in a hurry to visit her sick sister at the hospital

"She has recovered and is back home to torment her son and over-pamper her spoilt grandchildren," Nana Rose says with humor.

Maya chuckles. "I’m glad she’s okay. Do you have any kids?" She quickly asks Nana Rose another question to keep the conversation flowing.

"No, I had my hands full with Dalton and his brothers. I consider them my kids," Nana Rose replied, her tone filled with affection.

"Oh, are you also the godmother of the other brothers?" Maya asked curiously. She had finished mixing the dry ingredients and was now separating the egg whites from the yolks.

Nana Rose shakes her head. "I’m only Dalton’s godmother, but I raised his brothers as well since their mother was busy gallivanting around the world, forgetting she has four kids who need their mother’s attention." Her words were filled with bitterness.

That caught Maya’s full attention. She stopped whisking the wet ingredients: milk, oil, egg yolk, and vanilla—that she was mixing in a medium bowl and said, "That’s sad." She felt sorry for Dalton and his brothers. She knows how it feels to grow up without experiencing a mother’s love or affection.

"Is their mother still alive?" Maya asked as she resumed whisking the wet ingredients. Spikes chimed in with Nana Rose’s voice, as she said, "Oh, she’s very much alive, and she is still going around the world hunting for rich men to marry. She’ll show up whenever she gets bored."

They must hate their mother. Maya thought. At least her mother died right after she was born; that’s why she didn’t experience motherly love. But their mother is alive and chooses to deprive them of maternal affection. That really hurts.

A pregnant silence flew Into the kitchen as Nana Rose and Maya felt devastated for the brothers.

Maya focused on making the waffles as she quickly mixed the wet and dry ingredients in a bowl, stirring until they were perfectly combined.

Nana Rose spoke, breaking the silence. "But Dalton was fortunate. He had an excellent father who was very present in his life. Ah, Paul, may your soul rest in peace." She made the sign of the cross. "The other three, however, had fathers who were very busy and didn’t make time for them. They only saw their fathers on holidays."

"Aw, poor Aiden and the twins," Maya lamented.

"What about you? Do you have good parents?" Nana Rose asked.

"My mom died right after I was born, and I don’t know who my father is," Maya said sadly.

"Sorry, my dear. Being orphaned as a baby must have made your childhood tough,"

Maya nodded in agreement. "It was very tough for me. "

"Poor child," Nana Rose said as she came over and hugged Maya tightly to console her. The embrace helped stop the tears that were threatening to spill from Maya’s eyes.

"Thank you," Maya said, appreciating her kind gesture. Nana Rose smiled at Maya and returned to her seat.

Maya returned to her task. She beat the egg whites in a bowl at high speed until stiff peaks formed. Then, she used a spatula to fold the egg whites into the waffle batter until no streaks remained. Finally, she cooked the Belgian waffles in the waffle maker.

The Belgian waffles turned out perfectly crisp and golden brown on the outside while remaining fluffy and tender on the inside. She divided the waffles onto two plates and topped them with whipped cream, honey, berries, and fried apples.

She served Nana Rose.

Nana Rose moaned as she ate, "So good, very delicious," she praised. Maya smiled and replied, "Thank you."

Maya brewed coffee for Dalton.

She set the plate of Belgian waffles and a cup of coffee on a serving tray. "Where is Dalton’s room located?" she asked Nana Rose.

"West wing, first room you see," she said.

"Thank you. I will be right back," Maya replied as she picked up the serving tray and made her way to Dalton’s room. She had no trouble finding it and soon stood at his door.

"Dalton," she called out.

"Come in," he responded from the other side of the door.

Maya entered the room. "I brought you your breakfast," she said as she set the tray on a small glass table.

Dalton was sitting at the side of his bed with his laptop on his lap.

Maya looked around; Dalton’s room was spacious and furnished like a presidential suite, complete with a kitchenette.

A few minutes later, Dalton shut his laptop and hurled to his feet. He adjusted his cufflink as he approached the small glass table that housed his breakfast.

Maya noticed that his tie looked askew, and she felt a strong urge to fix it. The more she looked at it, the more the need to adjust it occupied her thoughts. Finally, she gave in and asked, "Dalton, can I fix your tie?"

"Sure," Dalton said, giving his approval. He remained still as she undid his tie and began to fix it. She kept her eyes focused on the tie, not wanting to look him in the eye. That will be too intense for her. freёnovelkiss-com

The closeness of their bodies was palpable; she only needed to raise her head and lean her lips an inch closer for them to be kissing. Her heart skipped a beat at the thought of that. "Concentrate on the tie, Maya, not his lips," she scolded herself in her mind.

"Don’t cook lunch for me; I will be in a meeting by then," Dalton suddenly said, forcing Maya to look into his eyes. Up close, his beautiful green eyes looked like a forest in spring, and she was enthralled, unable to look away.

"Okay, what about dinner?" Her voice was barely a whisper.

"I will be home for dinner," Dalton answered.

Maya nodded.

"Are you okay?" Dalton searched her face. "You look fazed and...." He took her hand from his tie and guided it to her chest. "Your heart is beating at a fast pace. Why?"

"You are the reason," Maya wanted to say, but she was too much of a coward to do that

"Just tired," she said, snatching her hand away. "I’m done with your tie." She rushed out of the room.

After she made her way out, she leaned against the corner of a wall and touched her chest. Her heart was still thudding.

She really likes him. It wasn’t just a mere crush.
