Chapter 346: Chapter 346: Dissecting the Heart 3_1

It was only at this moment that he was shocked to realize a terrible fact he had always overlooked: she was an orphan! She had never felt secure!

Just as in the early stages of her pregnancy, he often found her startling awake and trembling in the middle of the night.

He had always been bewildered, wondering why she wouldn’t fall in love with him despite how well he treated her. Yet, he had completely overlooked her lack of security—something he had never even thought of trying to provide for her!

The renovation of the new shop was more than halfway complete. Although Xu Xiaoya was overseeing it full-time, Yan Xixi also devoted herself wholeheartedly after work each day. In particular, this upcoming Saturday was Aunt Huang Ying’s birthday. She had promised long ago to go with her, so she wanted to finish her tasks ahead of schedule to free up the day.

They corrected some renovation details, and by the time they returned home, it was already past ten at night. Exhausted, they each showered and changed into comfortable sleepwear. Yan Xixi was sitting on the sofa peeling a large orange when Xu Xiaoya’s cell phone rang.

She spoke for a few minutes, then hung up, her expression excited. "Xixi, great news! Our old hometown is slated for demolition and land acquisition. The village committee called and said the compensation standards have been decided. My household registration is still there, so I stand to make a small fortune!"

This was no ’small fortune.’ According to local standards, one person could receive at least 500,000, plus a small house.

Yan Xixi asked slowly, "Why didn’t your parents call you?"

Xiaoya was momentarily speechless. In recent years, numerous disputes had arisen during such processes. To avoid unnecessary trouble, the officials in charge of demolition would notify everyone whose household registration was local. Yet, neither her parents nor her siblings had informed her.

"Whose name is on your family’s property deed?"

"My parents’ names. But the people at the demolition office said that this time, the bulk of the compensation is calculated per household registration. As long as your registration is there, each person is guaranteed a sum. The compensation for the house itself is separate."

Yan Xixi breathed a sigh of relief. "That’s good. Don’t count on the money for the house; just take the compensation tied to your household registration."

"That’s what I was thinking. The village told me I have to go back tomorrow. It might be a bit tricky, though, because my household registration book is combined with my parents’."

"Will they give it to you?"

"I won’t know until I go back and see. Xixi, you’ll have to keep an eye on things here for the next couple of days. I’ll definitely be back by Friday."

"No problem."

Xu Xiaoya set off early the next morning and arrived at her family’s home just before noon.

Her family was gathered around the table for lunch. They were all a bit surprised to see her return so suddenly. But then, their expressions turned cold. Only Xu Xiaoya’s mother stood up and asked awkwardly, "Xiaoya, have you eaten? Why are you back all of a sudden?" 𝘧𝑟𝑒𝑒𝘸𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝓁.𝘤𝘰𝓂

"The demolition office called and told me to come back and submit some documents."

Her brother and sister-in-law just kept their heads down, eating, and ignored her. Her father, however, said coldly, "What are you doing back here? We’ve already submitted the documents. This is none of your concern."

She maintained her patience and replied, "Dad, I need to submit the documents for my household registration—my ID card copy and the household registration book. If the documents aren’t complete, I’m afraid I won’t get the money."

Her sister-in-law sneered, "Oh, so you’re back for the money, are you? A daughter who’s married off still has the gall to come back for money?"

"I’m not married yet! Besides, I’m only here for what’s due under my household registration. I won’t ask for a single penny of the house compensation."

Her brother slammed the table and shot to his feet. "You sure talk a good game! Who doesn’t know the house compensation is the smaller part? Nowadays, it’s all based on household registration—a per-person payout! You’ve been gone for so many years, but the moment there’s a whiff of money, you come scurrying back. Let me tell you straight, this money has nothing to do with you!"
