The Billionaire Twins Need A New Mommy!-Chapter 654: Obsessed with Duty
Silence fell over the building, as if moments ago there hadn’t been a fight for life and death within its walls. Scarlet and Haji remained lying on the floor, not moving an inch, careful to avoid getting pricked by the shards scattered around them.
Haji closed his eyes and let his body rest. "I think I broke a rib... or two. Maybe my legs, too."
"Stop whining," she replied coldly, eyes fixed on the ceiling.
"I think I got shot, too," he added, touching his side. "Or maybe not."
This time, she didn’t answer, which didn’t surprise him.
Haji opened his eyes again, the high ceiling being the first thing that greeted him. In the distance, the sound of gunfire echoed, accompanied by faint shouts.
"They’re gonna get us, won’t they?" he asked, knowing Jarvis’s death wouldn’t stop the fighting. He cocked his head, glancing at her side profile. "How did you get here so fast?"
Scarlet didn’t look at him as she replied, "Skills."
"Hah."
Slowly, she turned her head toward him, lips pressed into a thin line. She wanted to tell him that she followed him because she knew his physical condition. Compared to her and the others on their team, Haji was already beaten down even before they brought him to the square.
Those beatings weren’t just feeble blows—they were enough to make him bleed, enough to leave someone on the ground or send them to the emergency room. And then, in the square, this man had recklessly added more injuries to himself just to force his body to listen.
Adrenaline could only take someone so far, and she was glad she had followed him.
"Thanks," he said casually, but sincerely. "You saved me this time."
"Twice," she corrected. "I saved you twice. Don’t forget that." 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝙬𝙚𝓫𝒏𝓸𝓿𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝙤𝓶
He chuckled and nodded before rolling onto his side. His body barely had any strength left, but he still pushed himself forward, crawling toward the broken window where Jarvis had fallen.
Haji stopped at the edge of the floor-to-ceiling opening and peered down.
Jarvis lay motionless on his back. The sight made Haji’s shoulders relax slightly, then his attention shifted elsewhere.
The battle was still raging.
If Scarlet weren’t here, he would’ve thought they were fighting her. But it was clear now that the mercenaries were engaged with someone else entirely.
"That guy, named Billionaire and Lola, somehow caught up fast." Scarlet’s voice broke the silence as she walked over and stopped beside him. She stood just a step away from the broken window’s edge, completely unfazed.
"Thanks to them, I was able to catch up to you," she added.
"Figured," he replied, and silence settled between them again.
For a full minute, neither of them spoke. Their thoughts drifted until Haji broke the quiet.
"Say..." he hummed. "...would I get in trouble for this?"
She arched a brow and shot him a sideways glance. This time, Haji turned to face her fully, eyes lifted.
"This isn’t part of the plan," he clarified with a shrug, scanning their surroundings. "None of this is. But somehow—one way or another—it always ends up like this. My question is... will he also—"
He raised two fingers like a pair of scissors. "...cut my toes?"
"Are you mocking me?"
"What?"
"No. Cutting your toes would be too lenient," she replied flatly. "Cutting you in half would be more fitting."
His face twisted into something ugly just as Scarlet continued.
"However, I don’t think Atlas would," she said calmly. "He’s not like that. He doesn’t hand out rewards like candy—and the same goes for punishments." She paused. "I was punished because my decision that night didn’t just risk his lover’s life; it was also direct insubordination."
Her expression remained distant and composed. "Regardless of my intentions, I challenged his authority. Whether he wanted to or not, he had to remind everyone who was in power and who called the shots. Otherwise, that would’ve become a much bigger problem."
"Wow..." Haji murmured in awe, his eyes never leaving her. "And here I thought you were just hopelessly in love with your boss. That’s why you stick around like chewed bubblegum on a wall."
She snorted, looking at him with ridicule.
"Love?" Scarlet shook her head. "Don’t make me laugh. I would marry him if he asked, but love? That doesn’t exist in my reality."
"Why?" he asked, the question slipping out before he could stop himself. "What’s the difference between your reality and everyone else’s in the Order?"
From what he knew, not everyone in the Order was single. Some members were lovers, though mostly kept secret. During his stay, Haji had even caught a couple sneaking out for brief moments together.
There were married couples, too. Not to mention members who had grown up within the organization itself.
So what made her reality different?
Scarlet let out a shallow scoff and looked away. Just when he thought she wouldn’t answer something so personal, she did.
"Duty," she whispered. "Because I have a duty, and a promise I made a long time ago."
Her eyes narrowed slightly, as if a memory surfaced for a fleeting moment.
"And this mission reminded me of that." Her voice softened as she looked down at him, holding his gaze. "Ha Himari reminded me of what it’s like to live with duty at the center of everything."
When she looked away, disappointment flickered briefly in his eyes.
"Man..." he muttered, turning his gaze aside as well. "Why am I always surrounded by people obsessed with duty?"
Scarlet’s brows twitched as she snapped her head toward him. But at the same time, loud roars thundered through the sky. Both of them looked up, spotting helicopters lifting off from the rooftop and nearby structures.
"Off they go," he said. "I want to stop at least one of them, but I don’t think I can."
"You don’t have to," she replied, watching the choppers rise. "They’ll be dealt with."
"How?"
"Didn’t you notice the fighter jets earlier?"
"We have fighter jets?"
She shrugged, eyes still on the sky. "You heard the boss," she said. "He’s going to take all of Ravah—and he will."
"I guess he would," Haji nodded slowly. "I wonder if this was his plan all along. I thought he was just overpreparing because Lola was involved."
"I doubt this was part of his plan," she replied casually, watching the helicopters scatter across the sky. "I wonder what changed his mind."
