Chapter 635: Miss My Children

Vroom!

Gehran flinched as a motorcycle revved up and sped past him. He didn’t even need to look back—the motorcycle had already moved past him, chasing the truck he was supposed to be in.

"Damn it..." he ground his teeth, his chest tightening as his heart raced.

He watched the motorcycle, hoping it wouldn’t stop. His entire world froze for a moment when the red light at the rear of the bike flared, making him think it would turn back. Fortunately, the motorcycle only slowed down before speeding forward again, never turning for him.

He heaved a sigh of relief.

"I have to run," he muttered, fully understanding his dilemma. "That damn Jarvis — that fucking traitor! I knew it! That bastard would bite my hand eventually. I should’ve killed him before!"

There was a reason Gehran was the governor of this region and not Jarvis. Overthrowing the Ha regime had never been a one-man effort. Jarvis was simply part of that success, albeit the most important part.

But that didn’t mean Gehran had simply sat on his throne or that power had been handed to him so easily.

Overthrowing Makoto was not easy, but it was possible with the right resources, support, and proper planning. The man they were taking down was, after all, loved by the people. His entire life was about serving the people and his duty as the governor.

Meanwhile, Gehran had once been one of the richest businessmen in the region. He and the late governor never got along due to the nature of Gehran’s business.

A business that was allowed to operate in the region because Jarvis—the adopted son of the governor—had approved it. The late governor and his heir trusted Jarvis. Because of that trust, Gehran was allowed to operate in the territory and build a name for himself, one so influential that even other governors took notice.

So when the late governor finally uncovered those illegal operations and dealings, Gehran was banished.

At the same time, Jarvis approached him with a plan to overthrow the regime. He needed Gehran’s money, influence, and resources—and in return, he promised Gehran the title of governor.

Who would say no to that?

What Jarvis truly wanted was survival. He already knew Makoto would eventually move against him, because the late governor and his son had begun investigating illegal operations within the region. Once they dug deep enough, they would discover Jarvis’s involvement.

To avoid that fate, Jarvis struck first.

Gehran accepted the offer and backed Jarvis’s plan. In secret, he arranged meetings with other governors who were also benefiting from his businesses. With their approval—and their covert support—the coup succeeded.

Without Jarvis, without Gehran’s persuasion, and without the other governor’s support. Without all of those, there was no way Makoto would fall.

The other governors had only one condition: Gehran would rule, and he would be the only governor they recognized.

Gehran knew Jarvis hated that. But there was no point in overthrowing Makoto if the other regions declared war simply because they refused to accept Jarvis.

Thus, when they succeeded, Gehran lived like a king—indulging himself while honoring his promise to keep Jarvis by his side and in power. Not because of loyalty, but because Jarvis still had value.

Gehran may have been a coward, but he wasn’t stupid. Jarvis had betrayed the man who pulled him out of the mud—what was stopping him from betraying the man who placed him on the throne?

Gehran had already been planning how to dispose of Jarvis.

But now... this happened.

"That lucky traitor," he grumbled, forcing himself upright through sheer will. When he finally stood, his eyes burned as he glared at the empty road ahead.

"Once I get back... he’s the first I’ll kill," he hissed through clenched teeth. "I’ll send him to hell and—"

Screech!

His words died as tires shrieked against the road. Turning his head, he saw a motorcycle stopped several meters ahead of him.

Lola planted her foot on the ground, steadying the bike. She twisted around to face him, head tilted slightly.

"Huh?" she hummed in confusion. "Am I really that lucky? Isn’t this supposed to be a deadly chase first?"

Gehran’s breath hitched.

Of all the people who could’ve found him...

He sucked in a slow, trembling breath, his mouth falling open as his heart stalled for a terrifying second. Then—slowly—the corners of her lips curled upward, her eyes narrowing with wicked delight.

"Damn it!"

Without hesitation, Gehran spun around and bolted down the sidewalk.

But even as he ran, it felt painfully slow. Years of indulgence and neglect were catching up to him.

"Hey, everyone!!!" Lola shouted, watching him jolt and stagger. "I found the governor! He’s trying to run away~!"

Her wireless microphone was still connected. Hence, her voice echoed throughout the square. Fighters, scavengers, and those storming the building all paused.

"He’s here~!" Lola cooed. "See? He’s running—oh no, he’s so fast, I can’t see him! So agile!"

As she announced his location, people flooded toward the street. Figures emerged behind Gehran, one after another.

Dread crawled up his spine as he turned and saw silhouettes framed by burning stages and spreading flames. His complexion drained further, eyes wide and trembling.

Slowly, he turned back toward Lola, only to see her smirking.

"Tiny bubbles," she hummed as the song looped through the square. "Make me warm all over~!"

She chuckled, then turned cheerfully to the residents who had rushed in, now standing just several meters from the man who had terrorized them for so long.

"Please don’t kill him, everyone~!" Lola cheered. "Hurt him, but don’t kill him. Give me a chance to land a punch later, okay~?"

With that, she revved her motorcycle, spun it smoothly into position, and sped away.

Behind her, the residents snapped out of their shock and swarmed the governor.

Lola glanced at the scene through her side mirror with Gehran curled into a ball as the furious masses approached him at once. The sound of chaos faded into the song playing so loud in the background.

"Gosh..." she hummed, eyes forward again as the speakers finally crackled and died with the flames. "I miss my children. I’ll finish this quickly so I can cuddle them."

A giggle escaped her as she accelerated, chasing after Haji and Jarvis.
