The Billionaire Twins Need A New Mommy!-Chapter 595: And I Wonder Why
Meanwhile...
"Also, darling, the finger you’re holding up is the one in the middle. You should lessen the hints to make it harder to guess."
Atlas pressed the button out of habit, ending the line purely out of instinct. But when he did, his brows rose as he looked around at the people surrounding him.
"What?" he asked, studying all the pairs of eyes fixed on him. "Was my guess wrong?"
And somehow, that second question alone made everyone shake their heads in disbelief.
All that exchange with Jarvis was cool and tense, but the parting remark Atlas casually slipped in felt a little too out of place. They didn’t think he should be answering Lola’s sarcasm at that point.
"Master." Baby stepped forward to his side, his voice sounding more like a reminder than a reprimand.
Atlas glanced at him and nodded in understanding. Then he turned to everyone gathered around the vast greenery of the estate.
"Finish them up," he ordered before he and Baby walked away, heading toward the mansion at the center of the grounds.
Currently, their group has raided the large mansion in the main city. There were people in charge of the place, and they had taken all of them down. However, it wasn’t what Atlas would consider a major win. After all, the amount of security present was different from what one would expect.
And by that, he knew in his heart that neither the governor nor Jarvis was here.
Otherwise, there would’ve been more resistance, and it wouldn’t have been this quick. Still, taking down the head first would’ve been the most efficient approach.
Classic Atlas.
As Atlas and Baby walked inside, more of their men were tying up or moving unconscious security personnel throughout the mansion. Those who were clearly servants and unarmed surrendered quickly, making the situation far less bloody than anticipated.
Looking around, the mansion clearly reflected the governor’s lavish taste. Everything sparkled, gold visible everywhere. Even the railings were plated, and the furniture was crafted from the priciest woods.
"It is a nice home," Baby remarked as he tread carefully behind Atlas, his eyes scanning every corner of the grand interior.
Atlas, on the other hand, couldn’t care less about the aesthetics. When both of them stopped, one of the men approached.
"Sir," he said politely, geared from head to toe, clearly not part of the main group that entered Ravah. "We checked all other areas of the mansion, but there wasn’t anyone here."
"That is strange," Atlas remarked, blinking. "This is the address where I sent my letter."
"They must have left the mansion once they realized the danger this place was about to face," Baby guessed, as that was the only explanation he could think of.
"I doubt it." Atlas finally took a moment to look around. "This place doesn’t look like it was occupied much."
Then he snapped his gaze to the man he had put in charge of the sweep.
"Ask the servants," he ordered calmly. "I am curious how they managed to deliver my letter to the governor."
Atlas had several guesses, but he wanted confirmation.
"Yes, sir."
"And Slater?"
"He’s in the backyard."
With that, Atlas lifted his head and headed toward where Slater was. The latter had wanted to run the moment he saw a familiar wall. If not for Atlas, Slater would’ve taken off without hesitation.
Atlas wasn’t about to let his brother do that—not because he didn’t trust Slater, but because he was the older brother. And he wouldn’t allow his brother to act purely on emotion, especially in a situation like this. Not on his watch.
When he reached the backyard, where impossibly high walls stood, Atlas stopped and glanced over his shoulder.
"I’ll stay here," Baby said, stepping aside and raising a hand.
Baby watched as Atlas walked away and stopped beside Slater.
As for Atlas, he stood next to Slater and stared at the walls the latter was fixated on.
"Bad memories?" Atlas asked first, giving his brother a sidelong glance.
Unlike usual, Slater didn’t answer right away. He continued staring at the walls, which looked both familiar and distant at the same time.
"It does bring back some odd memories," he murmured. "Even though these aren’t the same walls."
Atlas arched a brow and turned his head. "Not the same ones?"
"Mhm." Slater nodded, letting out a shallow breath. "I used to stare at them, First Brother. So I know these aren’t the ones. They might look similar from afar, but up close, I know this isn’t the right place. Besides..."
He trailed off, scanning the space before scoffing softly. "It doesn’t have this much space."
Silence followed Slater’s words as he finally met Atlas’s eyes. Although Atlas was known for speaking little, this silence felt different. It was as though he was carefully weighing what to say.
"First Brother, I’m okay," Slater offered with a brief smile before snapping his gaze back to the walls. "When I first saw this place from the drone footage, I was a little shocked. After all, I’ve been trying to figure out where I was held in my first life."
Though they believed the threats from their past were long gone, this unanswered detail had lingered at the back of Slater’s mind. He wanted to know where he had been kept—and who exactly had turned him into someone he was never meant to be.
Who would’ve thought that his sudden interest in this mission—born out of boredom and a desire to impress Lola—would bring him one step closer to that mystery?
"Slater," Atlas called, making his brother lift his brows and hum in response. "When you were held captive in your first life... was that your only mission?"
Slater nodded.
"And they promised Penny’s freedom?"
Again, Slater nodded.
"Do they know me?" Atlas asked, purely out of curiosity.
This time, Slater frowned.
"First Brother, why are you asking that?" he said, scratching the back of his head. "You already know my story. Of course, they know you. They’re the ones who told me you were dead."
"Slater," Atlas said again. "In my previous life, I was in an accident."
Although Zoren later claimed he wanted to be the one responsible for that out of spite toward Penny’s brothers, it was actually Zoren who rescued Atlas—and kept him hidden on what was once known as Pierson Island.
The moment Atlas said that, Slater’s eyes slowly widened as he held his breath. He turned back toward the wall, which looked eerily similar to the one etched into his memories, save for slight differences in pattern.
"First Brother..." 𝒻𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝘯𝘰𝑣ℯ𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝘮
But Atlas looked away, fixing his gaze on the wall.
"Slater," he said quietly, "I think... someone wanted me dead in my first life—and in this one as well. And I’m curious why?"
