The Billionaire CEO Betrays his Wife: He wants her back-Chapter 28: What you do to me
Chapter 28: What you do to me
Mara approached the police officer and the man in handcuffs, her face laced with curiosity.
"Well, you can ask her," Daniel said quickly, relief washing over him. "She’s my lawyer... and my wife’s friend." He just hoped Mara wouldn’t refuse to help him.
The officer turned to her. "Ma’am, do you know this man?"
Mara folded her arms. "Yes," she said, waiting to hear what he had done this time. She might even send him to jail if it was bad enough.
"He was in a fight," the officer explained. "No ID, no papers. Claims he lost them. He gave us a number he said it belongs to his wife but no one’s picking up."
Mara smirked, relieved. Maria hadn’t answered his calls. She was finally learning to be strong though she wasn’t surprised he was in a fight.
"I know him, Officer," she said, pulling out her card and handing it over.
The officer studied it, then nodded. "Alright, but he has to sort out his living situation. If he doesn’t, we might have to deport him."
Mara’s gaze flickered to Daniel as they removed the cuffs. He barely waited for his wrists to be free before rushing off. He had come all this way without papers.
"Why did you help me?" Daniel asked, his voice calmer than Mara had ever heard it.
She glanced at him as they stepped out of the station. "I would have done it for anyone in your situation. And I know Maria loves you she’d be heartbroken if you ended up in jail."
Daniel scoffed. "No, that selfish woman doesn’t love anyone. She’s sick in the head." He exhaled sharply, shaking his head. "I know you won’t believe me, but that’s what she does to people. You’d better be careful... and take care of your husband." His voice carried a warning, one Mara couldn’t quite decipher.
He wasn’t done with Maria... but one thing was certain he wasn’t going to let her raise their child.
Mara frowned, watching him. How could he say that about Maria? She was one of the kindest, most selfless people she knew.
No. She couldn’t take Daniel’s words seriously. Not from a man who had laid hands on his wife. freeweɓnovel.cѳm
Daniel walked away, disappearing into the crowd.
A sharp car horn jolted Mara from her thoughts. She turned to see Lucy behind the wheel, waving. She was done here too, ready to leave.
Mara took a deep breath, steeling herself before heading toward the car, but Daniel’s words clung to her mind like an unwelcome echo.
"You coming?" Lucy’s voice pulled her back to the present.
Realizing she had frozen in place, Mara quickly shook off the lingering thoughts. At least she didn’t have to hunt for a cab. Pushing Daniel’s words aside, she hurried to the car and slid into the passenger seat beside Lucy.
The ride back to the firm was quiet, the city lights flickering past like fleeting memories. As they pulled up, Mara exhaled, grateful. "Thanks for the ride I really appreciate it," she said with a small smile.
Lucy nodded, offering a polite smile of her own before heading off. After seeing Mara with Daniel earlier, she had simply assumed he was her husband.
Mara wasted no time. She handed in the evidence and made her way to her office, her mind already shifting toward the trial she was preparing for. But the moment she stepped inside, the door slammed shut behind her.
A strong hand seized her wrist, locking her in place. Mara barely had a second to react.
Her breath sank. "Ethan? What are you doing here?" she asked, surprise laced in her voice.
His gaze was intense, dark with something unspoken. "I miss you," he murmured, pressing himself against her, his body heat unmistakable.
A soft groan escaped Mara’s lips before she could stop it. She knew they couldn’t especially not here, not now but Ethan’s touch had always had a way of unraveling her defenses.
"You see what you do to me?" he breathed, trailing feather-light kisses along her neck, his teeth grazing just enough to make her shiver.
"Ethan..." she whispered, trying to regain control, but he didn’t stop as she could feel him growing harder.
"I know," he said, his voice thick with desire. "But can you feel that?" His body pressed harder against her, the heat between them undeniable.
Mara’s breath came uneven now, torn between reason and the way Ethan’s touch made her pulse race.
"You do this to me," he murmured, his lips capturing hers in a deep, urgent kiss. His dominance and his need were all-consuming.
Just then, a sharp knock at the door shattered the moment, forcing them apart.
Mara’s heart pounded as reality crashed back in. Ethan let out a frustrated sigh, his grip loosening, but the fire in his eyes remained.
Mara stiffened. How could she possibly ignore it? They were in her office, not his, where he could control who came in and who didn’t.
A firm knock echoed again.
"Mara, are you in there?"
Both she and Ethan recognized the voice instantly.
Bruce.
Ethan tensed, his jaw tightening as his hands balled into fists. A dangerous flicker of anger flashed in his eyes as he took a step toward the door, ready to rip it open and tell Bruce to stay the hell away from his wife.
Mara panicked, reaching out and grabbing his arm. "No," she pleaded in a hushed whisper. "Please. You have to hide."
Ethan turned to her, incredulous. "Why should I hide? I’m your husband."
"They don’t know that," Mara reminded him urgently. "And you promised me we’d keep our relationship a secret at work."
Ethan clenched his jaw, frustration radiating off him, but another knock sent a sharp jolt through Mara’s chest.
"Everything okay in there?" Bruce called, sounding more concerned now.
Ethan exhaled harshly but relented, slipping into the shadows just as Mara smoothed her clothes and took one last glance around.
With a steadying breath, she unlocked the door and pulled it open, forcing a composed smile onto her face.
"Bruce," she greeted, hoping he didn’t notice the tremor in her voice.
Bruce stepped inside, his sharp eyes scanning the room. "You okay? You took a while to answer."
Mara nodded, forcing an easy smile. "Yeah, I was just... going over some case files."
Bruce didn’t look convinced. He glanced around the office, his gaze lingering on the huge bouquet. He wondered who had sent them to her, it was no secret he liked her. The words of Jason flashed in his mind but push it back. Mara wasn’t that kind of person "You sure? You seem a little flustered."
Mara swallowed. She could feel Ethan’s presence, hidden somewhere in the room, his frustration simmering just beneath the surface. She needed to get Bruce out of here fast.
"I’m fine, really," she said, stepping toward the door in an attempt to subtly guide him out. "Did you need something?"
Bruce hesitated, his expression unreadable. "Actually, yeah. I wanted to talk to you about the upcoming trial. We’re meeting with the client in ten minutes. Thought you might want to go over a few things first."
Mara’s heart pounded. Ten minutes. She needed Ethan gone before then.
"Of course," she said, nodding. "Just give me a minute to grab my notes, and I’ll meet you in the conference room."
Bruce studied her for a beat longer, then finally relented. "Alright. Don’t be late." With that, he turned and walked out, the door clicking shut behind him.
Mara let out a breath she hadn’t realized she was holding.
She barely had a second to collect herself before Ethan emerged from his hiding spot, his expression dark and unreadable.
"This is ridiculous," Ethan muttered, running a hand through his hair. "Hiding like I’m some kind of dirty secret."
Ethan agreed to keep their marriage a secret for the time being since Mara thinks people might act differently around her when they know she is the boss’s wife but then again sneaking around to be with her was not something he wanted. If it was up to him he would let the whole world know
