Athena and Xavier had already walked far and reached the area where supplies could be gathered.

First, they entered the largest pharmacy in the city. They did not meet survivors, but they tried to collect as much medicine as they could.

Athena and Xavier moved swiftly, clearing out shelves of medicine, bandages, antibiotics, and anything else that could be of use.

The empty aisles and flickering emergency lights made the place feel eerie, but they had no time to dwell on it. Every bottle, every pill, was another step toward survival.

Athena was meticulous, reading labels and ensuring they took the most valuable supplies first.

She had expected the medicine to vanish into her soul space, but when she turned to grab more, she caught a glimpse of bottles disappearing from the shelf without her touching them.

She froze. Xavier was a few feet away, standing before a row of medical equipment.

A first-aid kit in his hands vanished the moment he held it. He met her gaze, clearly having noticed her hesitation.

"Are you also a space user?" Athena asked, keeping her voice low.

Xavier raised an eyebrow. "Are you too?"

"Yeah."

A tense silence stretched between them. Space abilities were rare, having one person in a group with such a power was lucky, but two?

That was almost unheard of. Athena's mind raced with possibilities, but they didn't have time to question it now. They had a pharmacy to loot.

They continued working quickly. Athena focused on medicines while Xavier grabbed supplies like bandages, antiseptics, and IV fluids.

There was no need to discuss what to take, both of them instinctively knew what was valuable.

It was strange how seamlessly they worked together, as if they had done this before. Once they finished raiding the pharmacy, they moved to a nearby supermarket.

The shelves were nearly empty, but the back storage still had valuable goods. Xavier forced open the locked door with a single kick, and they slipped inside.

The room was packed with canned goods, dried meat, bottled water, and energy bars. Athena wasted no time storing as much as she could.

She grabbed protein powder, baby formula, even multivitamins, anything that could sustain them long-term. Xavier moved beside her, doing the same.

Athena couldn't help but be impressed by his efficiency. He knew exactly what to take and what to ignore. No hesitation, no wasted movement.

"You've done this before," she muttered under her breath.

Xavier smirked. "So have you."

Athena opened her mouth to deny it but stopped herself. The truth was, it did feel familiar. Too familiar. But she couldn't remember why.

They spent the next few hours sweeping through hardware stores, clothing outlets, and abandoned department stores.

They collected weapons, warm clothes, and even a few survival tools. Athena found a set of military-grade knives and slipped them into her belt.

Xavier picked up a bulletproof vest and put it on without a word. By the time they finished hoarding, night had settled over the ruined city.

The air grew colder, and the streets were filled with eerie silence. They needed to find shelter, at least for a few hours.

Xavier led them into a small office building. The door had already been forced open, but the inside seemed empty.

They moved cautiously, checking every corner before settling in one of the back rooms. It was dusty, but it would do.

Athena found a desk and sat down, stretching her tired legs. Xavier leaned against the wall, arms crossed, watching the entrance.

Then, the sound of footsteps echoed through the hallway. Athena immediately tensed. These weren't the slow, dragging steps of zombies. These were human. Survivors.

She exchanged a look with Xavier. They both knew what this meant. Not all survivors were friendly.

The footsteps grew closer. There were at least three people, moving cautiously, searching. Athena could hear hushed whispers.

"Check the rooms. There might be supplies left behind."

Xavier silently drew his gun, his body tense but calm. Athena reached for her knives, her fingers tightening around the hilt.

They waited. A shadow passed by the doorway. The handle rattled. Athena held her breath.

The door creaked open. A man stepped in, his eyes scanning the room. His gaze landed on Athena first, then Xavier.

For a moment, no one moved. Then, the man reached for his weapon.

Athena reacted first. She lunged forward, grabbing his wrist before he could draw. With a sharp twist, she disarmed him and slammed him against the wall.

Xavier moved just as fast, stepping past her and aiming his gun at the doorway.

"Stay quiet," Xavier ordered, his voice low and threatening.

The man swallowed hard, his hands raised in surrender. "We're just looking for supplies."

Athena studied him. He was thin and desperate, his clothes torn and dirty. This wasn't someone looking for a fight, this was someone trying to survive.

"Are you alone?" she asked.

The man hesitated.

Xavier pressed the barrel of his gun against his temple. "Don't lie."

The man exhaled shakily. "No. There are two others."

Athena and Xavier exchanged glances. If they had a group, it meant trouble.

"We don't want to fight," the man continued. "We're just looking for food. We have kids with us."

Athena's grip loosened slightly. Kids? She looked at Xavier. His expression didn't change, but she could tell he was considering their options.

"Where are they?" she asked.

The man hesitated again, but eventually, he pointed toward the stairwell. "Downstairs. Hiding."

Athena sighed. She wasn't heartless. If there were children involved, she couldn't ignore it.

"Xavier," she said softly.

He didn't look at her. He was still staring at the man, as if deciding whether or not to pull the trigger.

"We should check," she continued. "If they really have kids, we can spare some food."

Xavier exhaled through his nose but finally lowered his gun. "Fine. But if this is a trap, I'll kill all of them."

The man nodded quickly, clearly terrified. "It's not a trap. I swear."

Athena released him and gestured for him to lead the way. The man hurried toward the stairwell, glancing back nervously to make sure they were following.

Xavier stayed close behind him, his weapon still in hand. When they reached the lower floor, they found a woman and two young children huddled in a corner.

The woman gasped when she saw the man return, rushing to his side. The children, a boy and a girl, looked no older than five.

Athena's heart clenched. They were thin, malnourished.

She sighed. Without a word, she pulled out a few packs of food from her space and handed them over. The woman's eyes widened in disbelief.

"Thank you," she whispered.

Athena didn't reply. She just turned away.

Xavier watched her carefully as they left. Neither of them spoke.

But as they stepped back into the darkened streets, Athena couldn't shake the feeling that something about this night had changed things.

She just wasn't sure if it was for better or worse.
