The Betrayed Heiress's Second Comeback-Chapter 43: Ch : The Confession- Part 2
Our lawyer’s words caused people to start paying attention to us all of a sudden. I could see Miss Anabella’s lawyer sweating as he tried to control his emotions.
"Judge and jury, here are some more cases that we have found where it is clear that Miss Anabella was involved. However, due to a lack of evidence, the investigation had to be stopped. Please take a look."
The file was presented to the judge and the jury.
I had already read through the file, so I knew that the ’lack of evidence’ meant being bribed in this case. And that was mostly because of the other high-profile names that appeared in the list.
Gasp
"No way—! Human trafficking—? Or murder? Is that why the director died? It was a revenge kill—?"
Someone asked, and more and more people began to realize what was happening. They all turned toward Miss Anabella to seek answers, and I wondered what she was about to do next.
Would she defend herself? Or expose others?
But she did neither. Instead, she did the one thing I had not expected anyone to do.
"You all are right. I did all that. It was all my fault. All mine and no one else’s. I am the mastermind behind it all. So if you need to go after someone, come after me."
She spoke confidently, taking all the blame for anything that happened.
Gasps filled the room before people began to talk once more. This was not a good sign for me. I needed these people to dig deeper and realize that there were other people involved in this mess.
If Miss Anabella was successful and made everyone think that all of this was her fault, then Rose, Karl, and other people who were part of this mess would get away scot-free.
"Calm down, Jenna. I know you are disappointed, but people are watching us right now."
Damian reminded me, and I let out a gasp before calming myself down. Thankfully, not a lot of people had started to pay attention to us just yet. But it was only a matter of time before they did...
"Everyone, silence... Miss Anabella, are you saying that everything that happened was your fault? Are you telling me that you are the mastermind behind not only the attack on Damian Black and his partner but also behind the human trafficking and drug cases that are in the file?"
The judge asked, and Miss Anabella went quiet for a second. Her eyes glazed over, almost as if she were in a trance.
"Yes, that’s right. It is all my fault—every last thing that happened was caused by my hands. Mine and no one else’s."
A shocked silence filled the room. Miss Anabella’s lawyer tried to get her pardoned one last time.
"Sir, I don’t think our Miss is in the right headspace. Please don’t take her words too seriously. She’s being framed..."
Even the lawyer did not believe what he was saying. But he had no other choice. He had to do the job he was hired to do.
"So, does your side have anything more to add?"
The judge asked us, and our lawyer shook his head. Miss Anabella had all but confessed, causing our case to fall flat. Any more, and people would start finding faults with us for trying to push a cold case.
"Very well. It seems that this case has been closed now. You all are dismissed."
The judge told us, still shaking his head at what happened.
This was not satisfactory. This was far from what I wanted this case to end up being. I wanted this as an opportunity to push Rose back.
I had a whole plan ready—I was going to slowly push Miss Anabella into a corner and have her confess about her connection with Rose and her role in all this. But instead, I was the one who had gotten the short end of the stick.
From the other side of the courtroom, Miss Anabella kept looking at me, her eyes trying to study me. But neither of us interacted much with each other as the court session came to an end and a sentence for Miss Anabella was announced.
She was to be executed.
’What a waste. I did not want this kind of end for Miss Anabella. She could have saved herself had she decided to cooperate with me.’
Something felt wrong here. I felt like there was something I was missing.
’Should I... go and pay Miss Anabella one last visit? Maybe I will be able to change her mind regarding all this...’
That seemed unlikely, but I still wanted to at least try a little bit.
__________
Anabella’s POV
’I-I did it. I did as Rose asked me to. But where was Rose? Why was she nowhere to be seen? H-Has she abandoned me? No way, right?’
My thoughts spiraled out of control as I tried to get my fear under control.
The guard had told me that I was to be given the death penalty. But surely that cannot be true, right? I had not done anything to deserve a death penalty?
Moreover... hadn’t Rose promised me that she would save me? So where was she...?
’Should I have truly taken Damian’s mistress’s hand and trusted her? No, she would have abandoned me as well. In the end, I only have Rose to count on...’
I felt miserable and tired. All I wanted to do was go to sleep. But even sleep did not grant me the rest that I desired.
Just as I almost fell asleep, a small knock at my door woke me up.
"Miss, there is someone here to meet you. Would you like me to send them in now?"
The voice asked, and I nodded before realizing that the guard could not see me.
"Sure, send them in."
My voice sounded rough and tired, but that was not the only part of me that felt like this. Everything was just... a little too much right now. I could not take it anymore...
"Oh my—! Look at the way you are living, Anabella. I am sorry that this happened to you. Is there anything I can do to make your last moments better for you?"
