Chapter 26: You Have Malakai

One of the omega nurses within the hospital that Eve had just stepped into approached her with a face filled with polite smiles.

She bowed and straightened up. "Please follow me this way, Mrs. Basti."

Eve nodded and followed behind her as they used the elevator to reach the second floor of the building. The door chimed open, and they stepped out, making their way towards the eye exam room.

"He’ll come see you shortly," the omega told her.

She nodded and stepped into the room, walking over to take her seat. She waited patiently and after a few short minutes, the door pushed open and a doctor, broad and tall stepped inside.

He was an alpha and he’d made his way over to her, a soft smile on his face. "Good to see you again, Ms."

"Hello." Eve returned a polite smile. "You said they were ready?"

"Yes." The doctor nodded and made his way over to the cabinet in the room. He picked out the small box with Eve’s name on it, then he proceeded back to her and slipped on his gloves.

"You should be able to see properly up close with it," he said as he began to help her put it in while demonstrating how she should do it.

"It wouldn’t affect my wolf’s eyes, would it?" Eve inquired.

The doctor chuckled. "No. It’s similar to wearing glasses, but omegas like you and even betas who are not fans of glasses, choose this instead. You have nothing to worry about, your wolf can switch easily if it wants to. The contacts won’t get in the way, if there is anything it will affect, it’s the color of your wolf’s eyes."

Eve furrowed her brows.

"What does that mean?"

"Assuming the eyes of your wolf are emerald and yours is hazel. The lenses are the color of your eyes so if you have it on when you shift, the emerald of your wolf will stay hidden behind it, but it does not affect your wolf in any way. Do you understand?"

"Yes."

"You don’t have a problem with that, do you?"

"No," Eve responded. "I don’t shift much. Barely remember the last time I shifted."

The doctor wheeled his stool back and stood in front of her, his large figure towering over her. "How do you feel? Can you see me clearly?"

Eve rapidly blinked and craned her head back to meet his gaze.

"I can see you."

"Properly?"

"Yes."

"How many fingers am I holding up?"

"Three."

The doctor’s smile widened. "Perfect. You’re all set. Be careful with those lenses, alright."

Eve nodded. "Thank you," she said before leaving and proceeding to make her way out of the hospital.

She walked down the flight of stairs as she shoved her glasses into her bag and while she waited by the roadside, she lifted her phone to call Malrik, Malakai’s personal man to pick her up.

But a message dropped into her phone, prompting her to pause.

With furrowed brows, she took a look at it, only to further frown.

The message was from Herla and all of a sudden, Eve realized that she never actually blocked her number. Why?

[We need to talk?]

{About what?} She typed back.

[Meet me]

{I’m not interested in what you have to say, Herla. Like I’ve warned you, stay away from me}

[We need to have a word, Eve. Meet me at the Bakers coffee shop on Silverpine Street]

Eve screwed her face at the last messages and instead of calling Malrik, she decided to flag down a taxi.

It took her twenty minutes on the road before she finally arrived at the street. She stepped down, paid the driver, and glanced around for the coffee shop.

Bakers... Her gaze landed on the shop from which she could already see Herla through the glass window. She crossed the street and pushed the glass door open, stepping inside.

She walked over to the table that Herla was occupying and took a seat opposite her.

"What do you want?" she questioned.

Herla rose on the chair, her legs crossed in an imposing manner. "I’m here to talk about Patro."

The very second the name escaped her mouth, Eve stood to her feet and walked off to leave, but Herla snatched her wrist, stopping her.

Her tone was demanding, "Sit down."

Eve shot her a look and snatched her hand, pissed off. "If you ever touch me or speak to me like that again, you’re not going to like what I’ll do, Herla. I told you, you are dead to me, so be careful."

Herla’s eyes flickered subconsciously and she reluctantly let go of her, jaw clenched in obvious displeasure.

"Stay away from Patro."

That made Eve pause. She slowly turned and looked at her. "What?"

Herla rose to her feet.

"I’m telling you to stay away from Patro, Eve. You are married now, aren’t you? Leave him alone and stop getting involved with him."

Eve blinked at her. She was so incredulous all she could let out was a soft laugh. "What?" she repeated.

That irritated Herla and she stepped into her face. "I don’t get it. You have Malakai, why are you still so obsessed with Patro?"

"Is there something wrong in your head?" Eve cocked a brow. "Was I ever obsessed with Patro or is that what you want to think? Are you that desperate to think you are hurting me in any way?"

She began laughing, her fingers coming to brush through her hair. "Now that I think about it, I’m not sure why exactly we were ever best friends in the first place. You are very stupid, you know that? What makes you think that even for a second, you and I are in a competition? Over a man who isn’t even worth it? I mean...Patro? Really? That’s the best you can do? You have to understand that I don’t love Patro, Herla. If I ever did, that would be way long ago."
