Chapter 78: I don’t know.

~Dahlia’s POV~

"The Alpha asked me to bring these to you." Sadie said with a smile and was literally bouncing as she placed a small tray of food before me, immediately causing my stomach to grumble with anticipation.

My mouth watered at the sight of the food. The tray was small alright, but it contained everything I ever wanted. There was a plate of well cooked steak dipped in a spicy broth and another containing chicken breasts and some bread. To the left, there was a small bowl containing rice porridge which smelled so nice, and so mouthwatering that even my wolf purred in delight.

And to the right, there were two glasses of juice and a satchel containing water. And a small wooden toy, one shaped as a knight.

Despite the grumbling in my stomach and the way my body responded to the food, I shook my head at the gift and muttered; "No."

Sadie balked. "Why?"

"Amara and I are not hungry." I said.

Her jaws dropped just as her eyes bulged. "But this is—"

"Just food." I snapped, interrupting her. "It is just food and I want none of it. When the kitchen releases my lunch later, that’s if they ever do, I’ll eat then."

Sadie stepped back to look at me— as if to really look at me. Her eyes roved my body with curiosity and then dropped to the fancy platter still untouched. The platter I wanted nothing to do with. And then she shook her head. 𝘧𝘳𝘦ℯ𝓌𝘦𝒷𝘯𝑜𝑣𝘦𝓁.𝒸𝘰𝓂

"Alpha Zarek specifically asked the staff in the kitchen to prepare this for you, I don’t think they’ll send anything else for you until later in the day." She informed me, causing something akin to confusion and frustration to rise from deep within my heart.

"I still do not want it." I said now with more resolve, even though deep down, it hurt to turn the food away. It hurt because my stomach rumbled with hunger... and because I knew that Amara needed that porridge more than anyone.

Frustrated tears seeped into my eyes as I tore them away from the tray which made it difficult for me to remain firm in my resolve.

I wanted it badly. So badly. But I didn’t want favors from the person who had sent it.

I wanted nothing to do with him at all.

"Dahlia," Sadie’s voice snapped me out of my haze and I looked up at her to see she was already watching me with something akin to pity in her eyes. Her fingers brushed over my hair almost gently and she whispered;

"I don’t know whatever it is that you have going on with the Alpha and why you seem to be set on not forgiving him, but think about your daughter. She needs to eat. She needs to recover. We’re all omegas. Me, you and her. She needs it."

My eyes watered. Even though I knew that Amara would be just fine as she was obviously an Alpha wolf, I didn’t argue. I couldn’t. I knew that she was right.

Nodding my head slowly, I pulled the tray closer and peeked at the items in it once more. The wooden toy was indeed a knight, and underneath it, a few letters were engraved. It read:

Z. A. R. E. K

I frowned.

It was a gift for Amara, and even though it seemed just as harmless as the tray of food before me, I still couldn’t help but be uncomfortable with it. He seemed intent on winning Amara over. Intent on being her friend, and the little witch unfortunately liked him too much to be won over because she was already won.

"Can I throw this away?" I asked, turning to Sadie who shook her head almost immediately.

"It isn’t yours but Amara’s. She should be the one to decide whether to throw it out or keep it." She responded.

But something about those words didn’t sit right with me.

In fact, none of these did.

Amara wouldn’t agree to throw it out, and we all knew that. In fact, judging from the way I’d seen her look at him earlier— like he was the sun, moon and stars, I knew that she would cherish it. And she would ensure to make my life a living hell with it when she realizes just how much I abhorred the little piece of abomination.

I rolled my eyes. "Whatever."

But Sadie simply smiled.

For the next few minutes, I spent my time dividing the meal into three sections, one for each of us, because I was certain as hell that Sadie must’ve not had breakfast or lunch. I shoved her potion into her hands despite her unwillingness and moved over to wake Amara up to feed her some porridge.

But upon reaching her, I froze. My eyes widened.

"What is it?" I vaguely heard Sadie ask me, but I was too stunned to speak. Too frozen to move and my heart pounded with an inhumane speed.

She dropped her food into the tray then and strolled over, her brows furrowing in confusion, but when she arrived beside me, she froze too. Her mouth hung open.

A moment passed between us.

And two.

None of us spoke.

None of us moved.

I had even begun to think that she would never say a word about what we’d seen, and that I would be set free from answering bugging questions about it when she turned to me with wide eyes. She then dropped her voice into a whisper and asked;

"She’s fully healed? In just a few hours?"

I nodded, still confused.

"How?"

"I don’t know."

"Come on," Sadie urged, "...you know!"

"I really don’t." I snapped, and that was the truth. I really had no idea, and the one time I had tried to heal her, I’d made a fool out of myself.

"Dahlia, you healed her." She deadpanned, but I said nothing.

Even though I knew that it had nothing to do with me and everything to do with the fact that she was not an Omega like everyone else thinks— hell, I recently just discovered I am not even an Omega myself; not that it matters right now.

But Amara didn’t heal because of me. She healed that quickly because she’s an Alpha wolf. But no one needs to know about that. Especially not Sadie.

I nodded. "I don’t know, but maybe I did it subconsciously."

She smiled warmly. "I understand. But what do we do about it? What do we tell Doctor Ava when she returns for her check up?" She asked, and as soon as the question slipped past her lips, I panicked.

Because that was true.

I had no idea what to say to Doctor Ava. I had no idea what I’d do when asked to explain how she’d healed so quickly.

And worst of all, I didn’t know what I’d do when Alpha Zarek grows suspicious.

I knew he had his reservations about Amara and I. Saw it in the way his eyes thinned when I’d told him her father was a nobody. A human.

He didn’t believe me.

And this was another reason to make him doubt me more.

I shook my head. My body trembled and my hands had suddenly gone clammy when I glanced up at Sadie and said; "I don’t know."

And that was the truth. I really didn’t know.
