Chapter 171: A series of cataclysmic events.

~Zarek’s POV~

Today, I was on cloud nine... or whatever cloud was above that. I slapped my legs onto Dr Ava’s table, crossed my ankles and smirked just as her door was pushed open and she stepped into the room with an overflowing stash of patients’ files in her hands.

"Mist of Lethe." I drawled.

Ava, due to the overly large folder in her hands did not see me at first when she stepped into the room, but upon hearing my voice, she stopped walking, her eyes wide as she carelessly dropped the entire content to the floor.

Her breath came in short pants, and with her left hand now pressing over her chest, she whispered; "Alpha, I didn’t see you there."

"I noticed." I stated simply, crossing my arms over my chest, leaning even deeper into the chair." Sorry I spooked you."

I watched her for a while, smirking as she struggled to gain control over her erratic breathing. It took her about three minutes to finally regain her composure, and after she did, she sighed. Deeply. "Good afternoon, your Grace."

"Good afternoon, Dr Ava." I responded eagerly, "So like I said earlier, the name is Mist of Lethe."

She frowned. "And what is that, Alpha?"

"Mist of Lethe is a special concoction gotten from the Greek river, Lethe, whose waters make one soul forget..."

"I still don’t understand what you’re talking about." She snorted, now staring at me like I had suddenly sprouted a second head.

I frowned now, more out of frustration, especially as my words seemed to be effortlessly flying over her thick head; and with a snort, I spat; "I told you I’ll find out what that incense Zorina has been using to abracadabra contained... didn’t I?"

"Yes, you did." She answered quickly, and as if the meanings of my words suddenly dawned on her— or maybe it was her rusty brain finally picking up speed, she gasped, her eyes flying open. "Mist of Lethe? It contains the Mist of Lethe?!"

"Yes,"

"That’s outrageous!"

"How so?" I drawled slowly, retracting my legs from her desk as I carefully rose to my feet; and all the while, my eyes were latched on her face, watching her every movement... including the almost non-existent twitching of her left eyelid.

She shrugged, bending to begin to pick up the scattered sheets of papers on the floor. "Well because it’s a very rare kind of magic potion, especially in this our part of the world... It’s also very expensive too. So I just figured—"

"I understand," I snapped impatiently, unapologetically interrupting her. "What matters is that I’ve gotten to know what the hell it is. What matters is that I now know that its antidote is known as Memory bloom, a portion gotten from a rare kind of wild flower... and that in the absence of that, you can also use Echo elixir."

"All those things are pretty scarce and expensive. I don’t know why whoever did this used that, but—"

"I’ve sent some of my finest warriors to go get both." I said quickly, ignoring the way she gasped in surprise or how now she was openly staring at me like I was mad.

I then gracefully walked to the door. "I’ve done my part, Ava, now, all that’s left is your end of the bargain."

That seemed to catch her attention because then she stopped to look up at me, her face a mask of confusion— one that I knew that she was faking. "Which is?" She asked softly, causing me to roll my eyes in annoyance.

"Of course, you’ll have to undo the cloaking spell you did on Dahlia. You’ll have to find her for me. And you’ll have to take me to her. That was what we agreed upon, wasn’t it?" I seethed, leaning towards her and staring her down in a way that should come off as me daring her to refute my claims.

She didn’t.

I didn’t push further.

"I thought so too." I snarled, and with that stormed out of the room, and the hospital altogether.

The sun, for some reason today, was unrelenting when I arrived outside. It shone down on me with a vengeance— not like I’ve ever committed any crimes against the sun god before.

I squinted against its harsh glares as I made my way into the house, only stopping when I met Leila by the door again.

She was quickly turning this into a habit— always waiting by the door whenever I went out, and being the first to say hello whenever I returned. A strange warmth bloomed in my chest when she wrapped her small arms around my neck and squealed excitedly; "Daddy!"

But it was another child’s voice I heard.

The one who always called me ’Zareeq.’

I smiled, picking her up. "Leila, how are you?"

"She’s fine." This time, it was someone else who responded and when I turned in the direction of the sound, I was stunned to find Nyx standing there, her arms crossed over her chest which was on full display, giving the very very low neckline of her blue dress.

"Nyx." I drawled, turning to face her— while I stomped against every urge to allow my eyes to wander to any spot, even the tiniest minuscule of flesh beyond her face, "and what are you doing here?"

Why are you dressed like this?

"I came to see you," She said slowly, "I want to talk about us. Me, you and our daughter. I want to know what we’re doing here. What I am doing here. I want to know if you’ve decided to make Jennifer your Luna, or if that position is reserved for the mother of your child— which is me by the way."

As the words poured out of Nyx’s mouth, so did my anger go from a ten to a hundred.

I snarled; "I’ve told you before, and I’ll tell you again. The only thing you’ll become is not a part of this pack. You’ll leave, whether you bore me a child or not. And that’s final."

Nyx gasped. I saw something akin to hurt flash across her eyes before she so easily pushed it down and turned to glare at me with raised chin.

"Fine then." She spat. "Then we’re leaving today. Right now. Say goodbye to your daughter now because you’ll never see her again."

I froze. Wait what?
