Chapter 294: Wrath of the god...

Kragen POV

The cold night air bit at my skin as I strode away from the safe house, leaving Selene behind. Every step I took felt heavier, as though the weight of what I’d just done—what I was about to do—was dragging me down, threatening to pull me under. But I didn’t stop. I couldn’t. Not now.

My heart was a storm, and the anger that had been simmering beneath the surface for weeks finally broke free, moving through me like wildfire. I could still see the look on Selene’s face, the way her eyes had widened in fear as she realized what was happening to me. The way she had begged me to stay, to not leave her. But I couldn’t stay. I couldn’t explain it to her—how much I hated what I was becoming, how much I hated them for doing this to me.

The Fates. Those damned puppeteers pulling the strings of everyone’s lives.

Today, I was going to go up to the Ethereal Heaven and end this Selene chase once and for all. I closed my eyes, trying to summon a power that had been inside me for years.

It was a power I rarely used—one that always felt unnatural, as if it didn’t belong to me. But today, I didn’t care. Today, I would use it to find answers. And I would tear down the heavens if I had to.

In a blink, the world around me changed. I stood at the edge of the ethereal heaven, where the sky was a deep, swirling mass of colours—violets, blues, and golds blending in a way that made you feel both awed and insignificant. Tall towers that reached up to the sky, floated around. Ethereal attendants—moved through the air like wisps of cloud, their faces serene and detached. But I had no time for serenity.

I pushed past the first attendant I saw, ignoring their startled gasp as I stormed through the gleaming halls. The anger radiating from me was enough to make them recoil, but I didn’t stop. I didn’t care.

I had only one destination in mind: the Palace of the Fates.

The attendants at the massive doors moved to intercept me, their expressions alarmed, but I didn’t give them a chance to speak. With a snarl, I shoved them aside, and they stumbled back falling to the ground.

"Lord Kragen, you can’t just—" one of them started, but I cut them off with a growl.

"I can, and I will," I snapped, my voice low and dangerous. "Get out of my way."

They didn’t argue. The doors swung open, and I strode into the palace without a second glance.

Inside, the room was vast, the ceiling impossibly high, draped in threads of starlight that seemed to pulse with the rhythm of the universe itself. A long, table was in the centre of the room, around which the Fates sat—ethereal beings whose faces were obscured by shifting shadows and other ethereal gods and goddesses. They were in the midst of a meeting, their soft voices murmuring in unison, their heads bent together over something I couldn’t see.

But the moment I entered, their voices fell silent. Every eye in the room turned toward me.

The air was filled with tension as I stepped forward, my boots sounding against the marble floor. I could feel their gazes on me, a mixture of surprise, confusion, and something else—something that tasted like fear.

Good. They should be afraid.

I glanced around the table, and that’s when I saw them—my father and the Moon Goddess. They sat among the Fates, their faces frozen in shock, horror etched into their features. My father’s jaw tightened, his eyes blazing with a warning I had long since stopped heeding. The Moon Goddess, looked like she had seen a ghost.

But I didn’t care. I wasn’t here for them.

The Fates—stared at me, their shadowy forms shifting as if they were struggling to maintain their shape. For a moment, there was silence. Then, one of them spoke, their voice like a whisper of wind through the trees.

"Who are you?" they asked, their tone was calm, though I could feel unease beneath it.

I let out a chuckle, the sound bitter on my lips. "I heard you’ve been looking for me," I said, my voice ringing out in the room. "Well, here I am."

They exchanged glances, clearly unsettled by my sudden appearance. "We do not know you," one of them said, their voice softer now, as if they were trying to placate me. "Who are you?"

Before I could answer, my father stood, his voice booming with authority. "Kragen, stop this madness! You have no place here!"

I ignored him. My eyes were locked on the Fates, the anger inside me twisting and coiling like a serpent ready to strike. "I’m the one you’ve been waiting for," I said, slowly. "The one who will bring in the darkness."

The room fell deathly silent. The Fates’ eyes widened, and I saw a flicker of recognition pass between them. They knew. They had always known. But they had never expected me to come to them like this.

One of the Fates leaned forward, their voice trembling as they spoke. "You are the darkness?"

A cruel smile twisted my lips. "That’s right. I’m the one who’s going to tear the world apart."

Panic flashed across the face of the Moon Goddess, and she stepped forward, her voice laced with urgency. "Kragen, you don’t understand what you’re saying. You cannot fight destiny. This is not your path!"

I finally turned to face her, my eyes cold. "And what if I don’t want to follow your path? What if I choose my own?"

She flinched as if I had struck her. "It’s not that simple. Do you think you can defy the Fates, defy the gods? You don’t know what you’re doing!"

I clenched my fists, the power inside me surging, dark and furious. "I know exactly what I’m doing."

One of the Fates stood, their shadowy form shifting as they spoke. "This is not your battle. You are not meant to—"

"I decide what battles I fight," I snarled, cutting them off. "Not you. Not my father. Not the gods. I’m done being your pawn."

My father took a step toward me, his voice hard. "You are my son, Kragen. You cannot just—"

"I stopped being your son the moment you tried to control me," I spat, my voice dripping with annoyance. "The moment you sold Selene out to the Fates."

His eyes narrowed, but I saw the pain beneath the anger. "You don’t understand. That was the only way to save you—"

"Save me?" I laughed, a harsh, bitter sound. "You call this saving me? Look at what I’ve become!"

I opened my shirt, showing them the rot that had begun. "Sooner or later, whatever it is, would manifest. Why are you doing after someone innocent?"

The Fates exchanged nervous glances, clearly uncertain how to handle this situation. They had never expected me to confront them like this. They had always expected me to play my role, to follow the script they had written for me.

But I wasn’t going to play along anymore.

"You think you control everything, don’t you?" I said my voice deadly calm. "You think you hold all the strings, that you can make people dance to your tune."

The Fates remained silent, their eyes locked on me.

"Well, I’m cutting those strings," I growled. "I’m not your puppet anymore. And I won’t let you use me to bring about your twisted version of destiny."

One of the Fates finally spoke, their voice barely a whisper. "What do you want, Kragen?"

I looked at them, my eyes burning with the fury of a thousand lifetimes. "I want you to leave Selene out of this. She has nothing to do with your plans."

The Fates exchanged glances, unsure how to respond. The Moon Goddess opened her mouth to protest, but I shot her a warning glare.

"This is between me and you," I said, my voice as sharp as a blade. "Selene is mine. She is not your pawn. If you come after her again, I will burn this place to the ground."

The Fates hesitated, and I saw a flicker of fear in their eyes. For all their power, for all their control over destiny, they were afraid of me. They didn’t understand what I was, what I had become. And that fear gave me strength.

"The woman must die, Lord Kragen," one of the gods said quietly. "Once she dies, you’ll be fine. Everything that has happened is just tangled fates. Her death will save the world from a lot of dangers. She must die."

"And I said, I won’t allow it!" I growled. "There must be some other way. Why would you want to save me and kill her? You can kill me too if you want."

"What do you mean?" One of the fates asked, staring at me.

"I am the evil that will usher the darkness in this world..."

"And Selene would be the source!" the Moon Goddess interrupted me. "She has the power to control all the elements. If she ignites that power, there’s no stopping those witches and wizards. They’ll destroy the world that we know. If Selene dies, they can stop feeding on the energy and everything will return to normal."

"And I refuse!" I barked, facing her. "Selene will not be sacrificed."
