Noah POV

I paced my office after mind-linking Reid and asking him to come.

Kurtis was at one corner of the room, a patient smile on his face. It was as if he had anticipated everything that was happening and I couldn’t blame him. He was used to things like this, I should have listened to him.

A while later, Reid entered into my office. He was covered with sweat and I could see the sincerity in his eyes. I’ve known that my Beta was going to be Reid since I was old enough to dream. Back then before I came to Moon Whisper, I would always dream of him sitting next to me, tagging along and pledging his loyalty to me.

It was the Beta bond and although the mate bond was stronger the Beta bond was far more dangerous. No matter what, my Beta can never lie to me. In cases where it happens, severing it could be the most painful thing that can ever happen and in some situations, it may lead to instant death.

"Your Majesty!" he bowed when he entered my office. I nodded at Kurtis permitting him to go ahead with the questioning. I couldn’t bring myself to do it.

"What’s your relationship between you and Princess Jade?" He asked quietly rising to his feet. "And it’ll be wise if you told us nothing but the truth. That’s all we want from you, Reid,".

"Your Majesty!" Reid scoffed "What is going on and why should I be answering to a mere Alpha?".

"Just answer the damn question, Reid," I said with a sigh. "Please, put my mind at ease and prove to me that you have nothing to do with Selene’s disappearance, okay?"

"How can you even accuse me of having to do something with it?" Reid fired back, hurt in his tone. "I’ve served you for years Your Majesty and no matter how dire your actions are, I always stick by you. I know how much Selene means to you. Or is it because you didn’t go with his suggestion?" he turned to Kurtis pointing an accusing finger "Are you trying to get back to me because...".

"I don’t have time to compete with you, Beta Reid," Kurtis sighed. "Princess Jade just called a few minutes ago. She has Selene in her custody. She knew she was going to leave the pack house because it was just me, you and His Majesty that was aware and it isn’t me for sure, definitely not his majesty but I also know it’s not you,".

I turned to watch Reid’s reaction. It took him a few seconds before understanding dawned on him. He stood there frozen with his gaze fixed on the ground. Tension floated in the room and I could feel that this was difficult for him too.

"Don’t worry, Reid... no matter what it is, I promise, I’ll not be angry. We just need to be sure of something... please," I said soothingly.

"I’m so sorry, Your Majesty," he said finally, his voice hoarse. "I’ve been keeping in touch with Jade for a while now. Through texting mostly and you know we would just do the occasional sex talk and stuff. She came back three weeks ago and we’ve been meeting regularly,". He swallowed hard, inhaling deeply. "Outside of Moon Whisper... hotels... that one time I travelled, I was with her. I’m sorry that I didn’t let you know,". freēwēbηovel.c૦m

"It’s none of my business what you decide to do with your time and life, Reid. Believe me, I don’t care if you slept with her either. But apparently, your involvement with her must have exposed something. When was the last time you were together?" I asked.

"Last night," he said quietly. "We spent the night together,".

"Well, did she say anything or did you call her this morning after our meeting to tell her we were taking Selene out of the pack?" I pressed forward trying to contain the anger that bristled at the edge of my reasoning.

"Well, she was the one who suggested taking Selene out of the pack. At the initial sightings from our scout yesterday. I must have expressed how you were worried that Nora and Brooke were back and she suggested that taking Selene outside a pack would be the best option,".

"Figures!" Kurtis nodded.

"And you thought it was a good idea?" I growled. "You thought taking advice from a woman whom you just finished fucked, who hates my wife with everything she had would give you some good advice because she loves her? What’s wrong with you? If you had married...".

"Please, Your Majesty... we’ll not get to the root of this if you’re emotional," Kurtis said suddenly, trying to placate me. Before he turned to Reid who was gritting his teeth in restrained fury.

"I am sorry, Your Majesty but I thought it was the only way to keep her safe. Especially as she’s with the future heir. Jade also made it sound like it was the best option, that both her and the pack would be safer if Selene was out of the picture for a while," Reid said.

I stared at Reid, feeling anger rising with each second. I had trusted him blindly. When he had brought up the suggestion a while ago, in a bid not to make him feel like I loved to listen to Kurtis, I had accepted it and now this? The realization that my wife’s life had been decided by two sex-muzzled-brained people angered me.

"And now, because of your brilliant plan, Selene is out there, in the hands of Jade and do you know what she wants me to do for her in return for releasing my wife and my unborn baby?" I said, my voice dangerously calm. "She wants me to reject her as my mate, denounce her from the pack call her a traitor and then make her my wife. Do you see how complicated this is now?"

"I didn’t know it would come to this, Your Majesty," Reid murmured. "But if you give me a chance, I swear, I’ll fix it. I can call Jade and...".

"You think she would not know that you’re calling because you know!" Kurtis cut him short rolling his eyes. "I think you should just stay out of this, Beta Reid. You have an emotional connection with the kidnapper, so it’ll be risky to try to have you contact her. Meanwhile, can I have your phone?" Kurtis asked stretching his hand towards him.

"Your Majesty, what is this?" Reid growled, "You’ll not let this mere Alpha humiliate me. I agree that it’s my fault and I said I’ll fix it. You don’t need to do this. Please,".

"Save it," I cut him off, sounding cold. "You’ve done enough damage already, Reid. Give him your phone and just to be sure that you do nothing else, I’ll have to keep you in the confinement cell until all of this is over. Like, Kurtis said, your emotional attachment can risk everything,".

"I am not emotionally attached to her!" Reid fumed. "You have to believe me, Your Majesty. I would not do anything that will put the pack or our Luna in danger knowingly,".

"You’ve fucked her for more than a month, Reid... how long do you think it takes one to be emotionally attached to someone after sex," Kurtis scoffed. "Give me your phone,".

He turned to me with pleading eyes but I turned my back to him. After he submitted his phone and security badge, he tried to call my attention again but I shunned him.

"Get out!" I said coldly, not even bothering to look at him.

I felt him hesitate before he turned and left the room. After he left, I turned to Kurtis. "So, what’s the plan now?"

"We’ll find Selene and bring her back to you. But there are two theories to this now. I have a feeling that Jade might have kept Selene somewhere else and stayed elsewhere. So, even if one search party finds her, I’m pretty sure, Selene would not be there. That will give the other search party enough time to escape before we do anything,".

"Are you saying she’s not working alone?" I asked.

"Of course not. She’s not that smart. She must be working with someone smarter. I made enquiries about the people that Selene may have met recently or in the past that may have animosity towards you and after checking them out, I was told that Alpha Jared left his pack yesterday for some kind of journey abroad but his flight ticket shows he’s still within the region and that was just a cover-up,".

"You think Jared is on this too?" I asked.

"I know he is. But before we conclude. I’ll have two teams and I’ll go with one of the teams. The first one will track down Princess Jade, while the other one will go after Alpha Jared. It’ll be a double strike and then there’ll be one more team – air coverage just in case there are any hidden surprises,".

"Good," I nodded. "I guess I’ll go and...".

"No your Majesty. You’re sitting this one out. There’s only one person for this job... the person that would go after Alpha Jared and recover Selene...".

A knock sounded at the door cutting Kurtis off. When the door opened, Lucius entered my office in his usually quiet manner.

"Your Majesty!" he bowed "Alpha," he said curtly sparing Kurtis a glance.

"Talk of the devil," Kurtis chuckled. "It’s him your majesty... he’s best at saving Selene,".
