Chapter 43: Chapter 43 — A Hard-to-Tame Heroine

When evening fell over Ark, Thomas was already waiting outside Protectors of Tomorrow University, the third-best institution dedicated to training and preparing future heroines—one step below the academy where Ashley studied.

University students poured out of classes in every direction: different looks, hair colors, and heights. For them, the word rest didn’t exist on a Saturday. Thomas had already been discharged from the hospital and felt much better; the healing gift had worked perfectly.

When he finally spotted his target, Inori Himiko, he realized she wasn’t leaving the university alone but accompanied by her group of friends—six of them in total.

"Ah, shit..." he whispered.

He dropped to the ground and sat down.

’I can’t tame Inori without putting her under a voluntary contract. Her Rank C surpasses both mine and the sedative’s limit; that only works on women with low rarity. I need to find her alone. I don’t know what kind of gifts her friends have, but just seeing their Rank B already says enough.’

He stood up and began walking behind them, keeping more than a safe distance. They walked several blocks. The girls stopped at more than one place, which eventually made Thomas impatient as he checked his watch.

’I’m running out of time... I haven’t done my daily mission.’

He opened the interface and looked at the letters on the blue digital screen in front of him. The main mission required him to complete his exercise routine, and the secondary one was already done. He had to hold a conversation with an unknown woman—something he had accomplished without realizing it when he tamed Evelyne.

’Huh? That’s right... I haven’t claimed my two gacha pulls.’

He discreetly glanced toward the shop. They still hadn’t come out. He opened the gacha and made his two pulls. Both times he received the grand reward of: nothing.

He sighed in disappointment.

"Then what’s the point of this thing?"

Several minutes passed. When Inori finally came out with her group of friends, Thomas resumed following them. By the time she finally ended up alone, it turned out she lived right next to a classmate. Thomas exhaled as he felt the strength leaving his body.

"Great. Right next to the Rank A with SSR rarity," he said sarcastically.

With that, he pulled Evelyne out of the whisk. She appeared sitting in front of him, wrapped in a light blue glow sprinkled with golden sparks. As soon as she reacted, she looked up at Thomas.

"You again."

Thomas noticed her calm demeanor. He crouched in front of her, watching her with curiosity, and spoke.

"Where exactly do you go while I’m transporting you from place to place?"

"I thought you knew how your power worked. I even started thinking you created it as a way to manipulate me."

"What kind of place is it?"

"It’s my ideal place..." she said, looking up at the night sky. "Sitting on the moon while I watch the Earth glowing below. A peaceful and silent place... it relaxes me a lot."

Thomas looked at the whisk in his hand for a few seconds. Then he looked back at her and asked,

"Do you think you could fight more than one university student?"

"And now what did you see?" she asked with a sigh.

"You see, Inori lives next to her classmate, but apparently that girl has a very strong gift—even stronger than Inori’s. The problem is, I don’t know what it is. Sending you in there without information would be risky."

"You know, I’d rather you order me to tell you," she said, closing her eyes calmly. "At least that way my morals will stay intact and I won’t betray my own."

Thomas gave the order, and Evelyne was forced to answer.

"I have decent control over my gift. If I manage to land the first blow, I know how to incapacitate Inori—specifically a woman of her build, weight, and age. However, I can’t control the force with which she’ll be launched. It wouldn’t be quiet in an apartment area; she’d crash right through a wall."

"In other words, we’d have to take her to an open area and get her out of the city."

"Why out of the city? You subdued me in the middle of a parking lot."

’I can’t tell her that Inori’s rank won’t be affected by the sedative. She has to be restrained until she voluntarily accepts the domestication contract, and during that process she’ll scream and make a scene. Keeping her inside the city is too dangerous.’

"Thomas?"

"Huh? Oh, sorry. For now, we won’t do anything. I’m afraid your power isn’t the one we need here. I’ll have to wait until tomorrow to bring Seraphine."

"Another girl? Hey, do you practice this sickness every day?"

"No, not every day. I’d like to, but I have responsibilities."

"I guess the kidnapping didn’t work out for you today."

Thomas stood up and called Evelyne back to store her inside the whisk. Evelyne let out another sigh before fading into the whisk’s light. He then stored it in the system’s inventory and left the building.

’It would’ve been perfect to get Inori today. I’ll have to separate her from her group of friends. It would help to have control over her weekly route and schedule—knowing where she goes and with whom. There has to be a moment when she’s alone.’

When he crossed the street, letting the cars pass first, he held his chin and continued thinking. The headlights illuminated his face.

’Every heroine is useful to me in some way, except Elvira. She’s a waste—trash I can give any order to. I’ll have her investigate Inori all week so I can tame her, which will extend the time it takes to obtain the best heroine in Sector K. In the end, I think Esthela will be the final objective of this first generation of domestication.’

He looked up at the starry sky, lost in thought.

’My ultimate goal is to tame Belle Snow, but to reach number one I’ll need to form teams that allow me to level up faster. Since I can’t tame Rank SSS yet, I’ll have to start with the lower ones and replace them progressively. Even though rank is tied to how well someone uses their gift, maybe I can help them level up.’

◇◆◇

Thomas arrived near the gym to complete his daily mission. He stopped when he casually noticed a woman sitting alone while eating lunch. She looked calm and relaxed. He was wearing the Entity Visor and could see her Rank F and SR rarity—the worst part of all.

He looked around. No one was nearby. He looked back at her. His heart began to race, and he placed a hand on his chin.

’So easy to tame... I could make her do whatever I want. Anything... What if I abuse this power? What if I tame everything I find? What if I fill my bonds with women? What if... I tame them en masse, put them to work, and each one gives me a percentage of her salary? I wouldn’t be doing anything wrong, and my money problem would be solved.’

He looked at his open system. He kept the same posture and continued thinking, staring blankly ahead.

’Come to think of it... what purpose was this system given to me for? Was it meant for me to abuse it, or to solve something?’

He checked both sides of the street to make sure no cars were coming. Then he crossed and approached the woman who was eating. She was an office worker wearing the typical gray dress with a skirt and black heels. Despite being well made-up, she was devouring a hamburger without a care.

She seemed completely unaware of the danger standing in front of her.

"Hello," Thomas began.

"Hm? Umm. Oh. Mm-hm," she murmured, covering her mouth with a napkin.

Thomas evaluated his first impression: an outgoing-looking woman, humble and apparently kind. Her eyes sparkled.

"Sorry to bother you. I just wanted to know if you know where Olivia Victoria Street is. I’m a bit lost in this area," he lied with an awkward smile.

She nodded with a smile. She wiped her mouth and pointed in one direction while standing up. Then she quickly sat down again and drank some water to finish swallowing her food.

"Over there?"

"Yes, yes. Oh, sorry about that."

"Don’t worry, I interrupted your meal."

She responded with a small laugh. She was an ordinary woman with long black hair; nothing about her stood out. Just another stranger.

"It’s okay," she said. "Um, did the directions make sense?"

Before Thomas could answer, the woman’s phone rang.

"Oh, sorry, it’s work. I have to answer. Hello?... Yes, leave it on the desk... yes, I’ll do it. I’ll go once I finish my lunch break. Of course. Thank you."

She sighed and looked at Thomas.

"Sorry, it’s... my boss, hehe. Always giving me too much work."

Thomas smiled back and discreetly glanced both ways. No one was around. He even wondered why she was eating alone in a place like that.

’Maybe she has a gift that can protect her? Though with that rank, I doubt it.’

"It’s a tough life, haha. Anyway, I’ll let you finish eating. Thanks for the directions."

"Sure, no problem. We’re here to help each other," she said kindly, closing her eyes.

Thomas walked away down the same street he had come from. The direction he had asked for was indeed nearby, so it didn’t raise suspicion. He slipped his hands into the pockets of his gray coat and thought:

’I was convinced I’d do it, but she was really kind. Looks like I still have some morals after all. Though that makes me think I could use it on unpleasant women—women like that bitch Elvira, or the one who kicked me the day before I received this power. That bitch fired me even though I was the only person cleaning her house, and she treated me like trash. I’m sure there are more women like that everywhere. Unlike her...’

He glanced over his shoulder at the same woman peacefully eating her hamburger.

’I have no reason to force a kind woman to work for me. I think I’ll look for women in Ark who abuse their authority; there are plenty of them, and I already have a few options. They’ll become passive income that I receive every week while I tame the ones who’ll help me in the Beast Tournament. But here’s the problem...’

He scratched his white hair as he entered the gym.

’If I use that strategy, then what’s the point of risking my life taming powerful heroines? Wouldn’t I lose my purpose of earning money, since technically I’d get it much easier by mass-taming nothing but Rank F women?’

He sighed while reading his exercise routine and preparing to end the day.

’I’ll sleep on it tonight. Either way, both ideas are very good.’
