Chapter 109: Carriage

They walked for a long time. The sun was scorching, and Severin could swear he had used up almost all the water in his body. The reason he was not stopping to drink was because Anansi was there.

He didn’t trust the man enough to use his space storage.

Eventually, though, after Severin knew they had walked up to four hours, he stopped. "How do we get to Sector Delta? We do not seem to be making much progress."

Anansi turned to look at him. There was a curious smile on his face, as if he found something amusing. He scratched his head. "We need to use the carriage."

"The carriage," Severin said flatly.

"Yes. The lands outside of Sector Delta remain unstable. You might walk without actually moving. How do I explain it?"

"I understand," Severin said. His voice was cold. They had been walking since, and he just found it fit to tell him that? He knew Anansi was going to trick him, but he never expected it to be from the beginning of their cooperation.

Anansi raised his hands. "Calm down. It is not that simple. The carriage can break through the disturbance around Sector Delta, but it is also expensive."

"How costly?"

"When you enter the carriage, you must leave one thing behind when leaving. Something expensive."

"And if you do not have such?"

"Then the carriage will take one thing from you," Anansi said.

Severin’s eyes narrowed. He had some equipment that he could give, but he stopped himself. Giving equipment would be like painting himself red and shouting that he was new. "So, what are we going to leave behind? Is that why we are here?"

Anansi smiled.

Suddenly, he walked faster to the boulder in front of him and then crouched in front of it. His hand was pressed down, and he said, "You should kill them once they appear!"

"What?" Severin said. He felt as if he could not keep up with Anansi. The man was doing things on a whim, his thoughts changed fast, and his actions were unpredictable.

Anansi’s body changed to that of a monkey man. "Oh, you should cover your ears too!"

Then his stomach swelled like a balloon as he sucked in a sharp breath.

He focused on the boulder and then released all the wind in his stomach in a shocking scream. The scream was like two metals rubbing against each other, a screech that seemed to gain a physical property of its own as it struck the boulder like an arrow.

Bam!

The boulder shattered, the ground around him cracked, and even Anansi himself was thrown back.

Where the boulder should have been, something impossibly fast, darting shadows jumped out.

Severin did not know what they were, but he was ready. He held two stones in his hand and threw them, activating his acceleration one after the other in one second.

Bam! Bam!

He targeted two out of the shadows, and two dropped.

"Ah! What was that? It was so fast, and see how they dropped!" Anansi hurried to the two monsters to check. "A stone? One went through the head and the other from the neck. Wow, you can throw stones like that? There must be stories behind it."

Severin ignored him as he went to study the monsters. They were thin, with long legs. They looked like undeveloped babies with tough skin. But what was strange was that when he got close to the monsters, they did not give the same feel as the other monsters he had been beside. "What are these?"

"Humans."

Severin stared at them and then at Anansi, who had returned to his human form and gave one of the monsters to him. "Explain."

"Well, there is a construct here, a medical construct known as Medic. It was one of the constructs that was not shut down, and it gained a little bit of consciousness. With that, they were corrupted.

"Medic still followed what it was made for, though, to treat people, but now it will treat people how it wants. These are one of its patients."

Severin’s gut tightened, but he did not let it show on his face. "Are all the constructs here powerful?"

He was already thinking of taking one with him and planting it in front of his house or carrying it around for protection.

Anansi shrugged. "They are not weak. Either way, we have our passage fee. I have been saving them up for the day I would be ready to take them. To think I will use them for transportation!

"You better give me a good story next time."

Severin stared at the human monsters again. To think they had been prey for Anansi for so long without them even knowing it. Severin was glad he did not underestimate Anansi because the man was treating him the same way.

As said, Anansi began to chant something, and soon they heard the sound of hooves pounding on the ground and the heavy creaking of metal.

Before long, the carriage came into view.

It was the biggest and longest carriage that Severin had ever seen, but that was not the only thing that drew the eyes. It was the giant horses that drew it.

Half horses and half human.

The humans seemed to be sewn directly onto the other half of the horses. Their long black hair covered their faces. Four of them moved the carriage.

Anansi nodded. "There it is. You know I have been mentioning the Lords? There are five Lords in Sector Delta. To be a lord, all you need to do is defeat a lord. So, the position is only for the most powerful.

"Four of them have a territory in Sector Delta, and the last one wanders the wasteland. He is the owner of the carriage. Do not do anything stupid."

Severin blinked. He could not expect that Anansi was actually advising him. Did that mean that the Lords were that strong? But he said he was once a lord. He shook his head and concentrated.

They entered the carriage, and the inside reminded Severin of a train. A very small one.

There were not a lot of people on the bus, just three, and with them, they were all five.
