Chapter 50: SysDi 50: Into the Highest Floor
Evan greets everyone he was able to pass by that either his mom or dad know. He usually won’t, but he had been gone for three whole days. He is pretty sure his parents would want to ask anyone if he has seen him around while they were out.
He didn’t want them to worry, so he just started greeting people politely. Didn’t stop for a long conversation. Just a small hello and hi and he was gone.
Iva had already asked him how he is going to go about it. Evan has no clue. He is just going to wing it.
Or so he hoped.
The moment they got to the library, there are more people around than the usual. Evan had to line up at the counter, for him to return the book.
"Oh hello, Evan." Mrs. Grey looks down at him. She had books in her arms that she pushed to the side so she can see him. She is wearing a simple floral, long-sleeved shirt. His lower garment can’t be seen, but she seems to be sitting on a chair.
Evan raised his hand a little and waves in greeting. "Hey, Mrs. Grey. You look very nice today."
Mrs. Grey laughs a little. "Ah, thanks for the compliment. Is there anything I can do for you sweetie?" She moves another batch of books on a counter from her left to the right to clear more books out of the way.
Evan smiles at her. "I was just wondering if I can borrow these books for a little longer? I haven’t had the chance to read them in full. I don’t want to get in trouble so I came back to ask."
Mrs. Grey smiles back at him, leaning forwards to ruffle his hair and pinch his cheek. "You’re one of my regular patrons, sweetie, you won’t be in trouble. Of course, you can. Can you hand me the pass from behind the two books? I’ll put another stamp on it."
Evan turns the book to the back, takes the stamps from the back and gave them both to her. He watched her stamp the passes and returned them back to him. He takes them and began to puting them back in the books.
"You can borrow them again for another three days. Is there anything else I can do for you?" Mrs. Grey asked, pushing the eyeglasses a little higher on the bridge of her nose.
Evan raised a hand and points at his back with a thumb. "I’m going to go borrow a computer today. Is Clara around?"
When Evan asked that, Mrs. Grey’s smile brightens even more. "Clara? Oh my sweet granddaughter is here, yes. She’s at the fiction aisle sorting out books there. We have a bunch of people pouring in and I needed the help."
Evan nods his head. "Okay, I will come to you if I need more help. Thank you, Mrs. Grey."
"Please, sweetie. Call me grandma." Mrs. Grey waves at him as he leaves.
Evan turns to see that there is a line behind him and it is still growing. He’s not going to stay there for any longer to bother her.
He made his way towards the fiction aisle first. If he wanted to go to the forbidden part of the library, he might as well ask someone from the library right?
Evan got to the fiction aisle, but saw it empty. Clara didn’t seem to be here today. Or, she is just done with her work here.
Before he can turn around, he felt a hand on his shoulder. "Are you looking for me, Evan?" The voice is familiar. It was Clara.
Evan turns around to face her, shrugging a little bit. "I just wanted to thank you again for the help last time."
Clara raised an eyebrow before pulling back her hand. "You already thank me before. And I already told you that you’re welcome. Why are you really here?" She narrows her eyes a little at Evan.
He sighs. Are girls really that perceptive? Evan has no idea. Still, he didn’t have a concrete plan on how to sneak in the higher floor. Clara works here and even if she wasn’t allowed upstairs, she would still know how.
That’s Evan’s guess, at least.
"There is something I want to find out..." Evan says, with another shrug.
He didn’t know how it was possible, but Clara’s eyes seemed to have narrowed further.
"What do you want to find out?" She asked, her arms now crossed in front of her.
"How to get to the highest floor?" Evan says, looking at her expression closely.
There was surprise, then confusion, the amusement, then even more confusion before a giggle came from Clara.
It was Evan’s turn to have his eyes narrowed. "What’s funny?"
Clara shook her head. "Nothing’s funny. It’s just... You’re very blunt. I asked and you answered."
Evan watched her sigh.
"Come on then." She says, gesturing with her hand to follow her.
"You’re not even going to ask why I want to be on the highest floor?" Evan says, walking right behind her.
Clara paused to look at him. She shook her head. "I think I have an idea what you want from there. But, I won’t ask. I’m coming with you anyway. I’ll know what it is when you get there."
Evan stopped beside her. "Are you sure? Won’t you get in trouble with grandma?" freewēbnoveℓ.com
"It’ll be fine. Besides, I do a lot of the cleaning upstairs anyway. If we get find out, you hide and I distract, easy."
It is also a busy day for the library too. So, Evan thinks it is fair for Clara to join him. He didn’t know much of where things are. Clara with him means it will be easier to find things he needs. So, he didn’t say anything.
Clara led him to the staircase. It has a gate on it. She took a key from around her neck, a necklace and unlocked the gate.
"After you." She says, gesturing with her hand.
