Chapter 46: SysDi 46: Recovering

Tired, hungry and thirsty, Evan was more than eager to walk back home. It felt like forever, walking around in the stone hill cave without the insistent sound of Iva talking in his head.

There is still that worry within him. Iva just disappeared when he tried using the Simulation Zone when he didn’t know that he shouldn’t. If only he had asked it if he could use the Simulation Zone while he was inside, then, maybe Iva would still be its usual annoying self in his head.

Now, he is left in silence. He can’t believe he is missing a voice constantly speaking with him the moment it stopped talking.

Evan finally reached the stairs and began his slow ascend. The torches on the walls provide less comfort but it was still a comfort.

Halfway through, even with the darkness outside indicating that it was night time, the lights of the torches completely disappeared and something suddenly felt off.

Normally, that was okay. Evan is already used to the slow ascend in the darkness the moment the light made everything dark. The last time this had happened was when he had to run for his life being chased by a something Iva called a Watch User Slayer.

Being busy made him forgot to ask Iva more about them.

There’s still a lot of things that he has no idea about. Which is why he would rather have his usual chat buddy back.

The forest is eerily quiet. There are no leaves rustling, no branches being crushed by any animals around, no crickets. Just pure silence. Not even the wind is blowing kind of quiet.

For a moment, Evan felt like he was in the Simulation Zone. It was almost the same feeling, except he knows what it would look like. That was not this way.

Back outside the forest, looking at the fields on his left, it was empty but tilted. Evan looked at it confused. His father had already harvested the corn? But that was supposedly a thing he should’ve helped his dad with.

Evan looked at their home from the distance. There was no light, nor any sign of anyone inside.

He could almost feel his heart stop at the sight.

Before he knew it, he was making a run for it. Closer and closer, Evan didn’t stop until he reached the door and opened it wide open.

"Mom?" He called out loud, looking around the house frantically. "Dad?"

Silence. No one is replying to his calls. There seems to be no one inside the house.

Evan walked inside, making a beeline towards his parents room. He knocked on the door before opening it to see if they were just asleep.

That wasn’t the case. His parents were nowhere to be found in the house. The bed they lay every night is also clean and made, as if they have been around for a while.

Panic filled Evan’s body. Where did they go? He did not really disappear for a while, did he?

He made his way towards the kitchen. He sat on one of the chairs and finally noticed a piece of paper on the table.

He stared at it for a moment, before noticing Sylvia’s neat handwriting of Evan’s name on it. Just a small brown paper.

Not really sure why his mom would leave a letter, Evan took it and unfolds it so he can read it.

-----

Evan,

Your father and I have just finished harvesting the fields very early today. Your door was closed so we didn’t bother waking you up. The town doesn’t need a supply of corn at the moment so we’re sending them through a contact your father had in Taqpel City, the next city past Xertle. We might be there for a few days.

In the meantime, take care of yourself. I made sure you have enough food for at least a week. If you want, you can stay over at Samuel’s. I already asked a favor to his parents and their fine with it

We love you. Take care okay?

Love,

Sylvia and Erwin

-----

Evan read the letter slowly. When he finished, the tension and panic is released from his shoulders. They are okay, at least, the letter said that nothing bad had happened to them here. The letter was at least 3 years old, since he can see that the banana at the side they used to eat for dessert looks very, very ripe.

From the amount of strangers that he had been visiting, Evan thought something bad would had happened. It is a good thing that wasn’t the case.

With his parents not around, Evan could freely look at his panel and maybe try something. It’s still quiet, but he has a lamp on that he can use as a light source as he stayed on his seat.

"Status." He mutters, wanting to explore something while he has the chance.

The panels shows up, like it usually do.

Looking at it, Evan turns to the Map tab. It is pretty self-explanatory what it is. So, he ignores it for now and decided to go for the crafting tab instead.

"Crafting tab." Evan says.

Evan raised an eyebrow at the new tab he had just accessed. He knew what automation meant. For people to have automation, he heard that they need to have a lot of money for that to work.

Erwin, his dad, mentioned that some farmers had a way to harvest crops and plants seeds using machines. Those were expensive. It was just too expensive for them to purchase it.

Seeing that he had automation means a lot to him. He would have to find more about this crafting.
