Chapter 188: What Took You So Long?

Arianne stood near the entryway. Not waiting. Just positioned. She’d been standing there for three minutes—long enough to notice she was standing there, not long enough to convince herself to move.

Franz was a few steps behind her. One hand rested on the back of a chair. He didn’t move when the lock turned.

Ellie stepped in first. Her posture was controlled, but it carried the weight of someone who had not had the luxury of slowing down before arriving. Her coat was on, one hand holding it closed out of habit rather than necessity. Kyle followed just behind her, his gaze moving quickly, taking in the space without hesitation.

He remembered it. That much showed in the way he didn’t stop at the threshold.

"Shoes," Lily said, appearing almost immediately from the hallway, her timing too precise to be coincidence. She pointed down toward the mat with both hands, as if the direction needed emphasis. "You have to take them off."

Kyle looked up at Ellie. She gave a small nod. "It’s fine."

He stepped forward, copying Lily as she exaggerated the motion of slipping hers off again, even though she had clearly already done so earlier. Leo stood just behind her, tablet held at chest height, his gaze fixed on Kyle.

The screen flickered.

He’s back!

Kyle leaned toward it, reading even if he didn’t fully process it.

"That means you came back," Lily explained quickly. "It’s a good thing."

Kyle nodded. "I brought the blue car," he said, holding it up as if it needed to be shown.

Lily’s eyes widened just enough to match the importance. "We saved the blocks. The big ones."

"The tall ones?" Kyle asked.

"The tallest," Lily said. "We didn’t knock them down."

Leo typed again.

Still up!

That was enough. Kyle moved toward them without hesitation, drawn more by the promise than the explanation. The three of them turned down the hallway together, their movement easy, unforced. Leo walked beside him, Lily slightly ahead, already talking.

"You can build higher this time. Last time it fell because you didn’t put the square ones first."

"I did," Kyle protested.

"You didn’t," Lily said. "You skipped."

Their voices faded into the playroom, replaced by the soft sounds of movement—blocks moving, something sliding across the floor, the low tap of Leo’s tablet.

Ellie watched them go. Not long. Just enough.

Her shoulders lowered after they disappeared from view. A breath she hadn’t announced, released.

Julian stood near the center of the room. He hadn’t stepped forward yet. He hadn’t stepped back either. His posture held, but there was a pause in it now—something kept in place while he adjusted to the fact that the situation had moved from conversation into reality.

Arianne turned. "We can sit."

Ellie nodded and moved toward the seating area. Julian followed. Franz moved only enough to take his seat beside Arianne, aligned rather than leading.

They settled without ceremony. Ellie took the chair closest to the hallway—she could see the playroom from here. Julian sat across from her, too far or too close, it wasn’t clear which. Arianne angled herself between them, not mediator, not participant. Something in between. Franz stayed beside her, his body turned just enough to see all of them.

The playroom remained audible. Not loud. Just present. It grounded the space.

Julian spoke first.

"I meant what I said."

His voice was steady, but there was weight to it now that hadn’t been there before.

Julian’s hands were in his lap. He’d clasped them there without meaning to. He unclasped them. Let them rest.

"I want to be involved."

Ellie’s hands pressed flat against her thighs. She pulled them back. Curled them into her coat instead.

"I’ve been managing."

"I know."

"I don’t want that to turn into something I can’t control."

Julian nodded. "It won’t. Not like that."

Ellie studied him.

"You don’t get to step in and change how things work."

"I’m not trying to," Julian replied. The words came without tension. Just placement.

Arianne didn’t interrupt. Franz didn’t move. The conversation stayed where it belonged.

"I’ll take him when you need. Late shifts. Emergencies."

Ellie’s gaze flickered. "You don’t know my schedule."

"I will," he replied. No elaboration. No insistence. Just a statement.

Ellie’s fingers tightened against her sleeve.

"I don’t leave him with people I don’t trust."

Julian held her gaze. "You won’t have to."

A brief pause.

From the playroom—a crash. Then laughter.

"It fell again!" Lily said. "You didn’t listen."

Leo’s tablet tapped. Kyle said something softer. Then more laughter.

Ellie’s eyes moved toward the hallway. Then back.

"If you’re not available," Julian continued, "he can stay here."

Ellie followed his glance. Arianne met it.

"That’s fine," she said. No added reassurance. No adjustment in tone. Just agreement.

Ellie exhaled.

"And financially," Julian said, "I’ll cover what he needs."

Ellie’s gaze sharpened.

"I’m not asking for that."

"I know. It’s not about that."

Her voice came out sharper than she probably meant.

"You don’t get to buy your way in."

She held his gaze.

"I don’t want to depend on it."

"You won’t," he replied.

A pause. "You might," she said, lower now.

That line stayed.

Julian didn’t rush to answer.

"It’s about him," he said.

Ellie’s shoulders lowered. Not fully. But enough.

"I’ll try," she said. Not full agreement. But movement.

"That’s enough," Julian replied.

The structure was set. Not stable yet. But standing.

From the hallway—

"Come see!" Lily called.

Footsteps followed. Kyle appeared first this time. He stepped into the room and slowed. His gaze landed on Julian. Then moved to Ellie. Then back again.

Julian stood. Not abruptly. But fully.

Kyle didn’t move closer right away.

"Are you really my daddy?" he asked.

The question came simply. No hesitation.

Julian lowered himself, bringing himself to Kyle’s height.

"Yes. I am."

A small pause.

Kyle watched him. Processing.

Then: "Then what took you so long to find me?"

Arianne’s hand moved toward Franz’s. Stopped. She pulled it back before it reached him.

This was her doing. She’d told Julian. She’d brought them here. And now a child was asking why his father hadn’t found him.

The room held.

Julian didn’t look away.

"I didn’t know you were here. I should have looked."

Kyle didn’t answer immediately.

Julian continued. "I’m here now. I’ll stay."

He opened his arms. Not pulling. Not expecting.

Kyle hesitated.

Then stepped forward.

The hug was uneven. Not tight. Not loose. Just real.

Julian’s hand settled against his back.

Ellie watched. Her hand had found the arm of the chair. She didn’t let go.

Franz leaned toward Arianne.

"It wasn’t hard to figure out," he said, his voice low. A beat. "They look the same."

Arianne’s eyes moved. Then returned forward. She didn’t respond.

Julian looked up. Found Arianne. Mouthed: Thank you.

She held his gaze. Then looked away.

Kyle didn’t let go immediately. His hands stayed where they were. As if making sure.

Behind them, Lily leaned toward Leo.

"I told you," she whispered.

Leo typed.

You are right.

The house remained around them. Not unchanged. But different.

Kyle stayed close. Julian didn’t move.

From the hallway, Lily’s whisper: "Does this mean he’s staying?"

Leo’s tablet lit up. Ask him.

Arianne heard Franz exhale—not quite a laugh. She didn’t look at him.

She was watching Julian’s hand against Kyle’s back. The way it didn’t move. Like he was afraid Kyle would disappear if he let go.

She knew that feeling.
