Chapter 219: Weird Creatures

Medeia and Lucian stepped out of the base, heading off to find the fur monsters’ nest. The air wasn’t as freezing as it had been during the snowstorm, but it was still cold enough that she had to wear two coats just to stay warm.

"So, you didn’t sleep at all last night?" she asked as they walked farther from the base.

Lucian answered with a bit of hesitation. "I did sleep ..." His voice dropped. "For two hours."

Two hours?!

How could anyone function on just two hours of sleep? And this wasn’t even the first time. He’d once slept only thirty minutes and still acted like everything was normal the next day, as if his body didn’t even need rest.

His damn insomnia was so bad that Medeia had seriously considered slipping sleeping pills into his drink.

"But thanks to that, I found their nest, didn’t I?" Lucian said proudly, stepping ahead of her and walking backward so he could face her. "That’s a good thing, right?"

Medeia took a deep breath, trying to suppress her irritation because Lucian had once again ignored his sleep schedule. "You’re banned from night patrol for the next two days," she said firmly.

Lucian had been staying up late ever since those soldiers attacked the Red Star Alliance. She got it that he was worried. He didn’t want another surprise attack on their base. But that didn’t mean he had to throw his health out the window just to keep watch over everyone else.

"I ..." Lucian was about to argue, but one sharp look from Medeia made him swallow his words. "I understand, Ma’am."

He led her toward a more hidden part of the canyon, where heavy snow had covered most of the ground, making the temperature around them drop drastically.

"I was just planning to check out some of the hidden spots in the canyon," Lucian said. "I thought those places might be good for storing our secret weapon. But I didn’t expect to stumble upon something this interesting."

He gently grabbed Medeia’s hand and pulled her behind a large rock when they came across a crack in the canyon wall. It was narrow, but just wide enough for a large creature to squeeze through.

Medeia crouched down, her eyes catching sight of huge footprints, at least three times the size of a human’s, scattered across the snowy ground. The prints were starting to fade under the fresh snow, but they were still clear enough to see.

"My guess is they’re more active at night," Lucian whispered near her ear.

Medeia peeked through the gap between the rocks, her eyes scanning the shadows, searching for any signs of movement inside the narrow stone passage. "I don’t see anything."

Still, something didn’t sit right with her.

Why was the system asking her to investigate these creatures? If they were just mutant monsters, wasn’t it the system’s job to provide her with details—like their rank or abilities?

Sure, the system could be useless sometimes ... but this? This was a new low. It was practically asking her to do the work it was supposed to handle.

"There," Lucian said softly, tilting her chin upward so she could see what he was seeing. "They’re sleeping, stuck to the wall."

Medeia frowned, her eyes widening like she’d just seen something that blew her mind. ’What the actual fuck is wrong with them?!’

The creatures looked like yetis. Thick white fur covered their bodies, leaving only their gray-colored faces exposed.

Monsters like that were supposed to stay on the ground, sleeping in caves, hiding among snow and rocks.

But no. These freaks were hanging on the rocky walls, their backs pressed flat against the surface like snails or some kind of slimy wall-dwelling creatures.

Something about the sight gave Medeia the chills. She didn’t know why, but watching those things cling to the wall like that made her shiver in disgust.

"Do they sleep during the day?" she muttered, brushing off her unease as she focused on counting them one by one. "Twenty-three? That many, and not a single one has tried attacking our base ... even though it’s full of people."

Big mutant monsters like these usually hunted humans like they were snacks. So why were these ones just hanging around—literally—on canyon walls, or wandering near the base without making a move?

It didn’t make any sense.

And worse, the system still hadn’t given her any useful info.

[The system gave you this mission to find out about them, Host.]

[If the system told you everything, what would be the point?]

Oh, she had a few ideas.

"For starters, it’d save me a lot of time," she muttered under her breath.

Besides, what exactly was the goal of this mission anyway? Even the Watchers watching her journey were probably thinking the same thing, why was she just standing around staring at weird wall-hugging monsters?

"Did you complete the mission?" Lucian asked.

Medeia shook her head. "Nope." She sighed and clicked her tongue. "Apparently, just watching them from a distance isn’t enough for the system."

Without hesitation, Lucian offered, "Want to get a closer look? Might help you learn more."

She glanced at him, then looked back at the creatures. They did look terrifying—those long fangs sticking out from their mouths were no joke. But even so, that wasn’t enough to scare her off.

If anything, it made her more curious.

Were they actually dangerous? Or just strange-looking creatures that people misunderstood?

Either way, she wasn’t leaving without answers.

"Come on," Medeia said as she took the lead, heading straight toward the narrow crack in the canyon wall. She didn’t bother to keep her steps quiet. If anything, it seemed like she was purposely being loud, like she wanted to wake the weird creatures up.

She said, "Should we catch one and bring it back to the base for research?"

Lucian frowned slightly as he followed behind her. "I don’t know ... The way they sleep so close together makes me think they live in big packs. If we snatch one, the others might come after us."

They had no idea what these creatures could actually do. That’s why it was probably smarter not to take any risks, especially if it could make everyone back at the base even more anxious than they already were.

Medeia let out a small sigh, her excitement fading just a bit. "Yeah ... you’re right," she muttered, eyeing the creatures still clinging to the wall like oversized bugs. "Dragging one of them back might cause more trouble than it’s worth."

As they stood right in front of the crack in the stone wall, Medeia noticed patches of fur scattered across the snowy ground.

"They shed a lot," she muttered, reaching out to rest her hand against the wall beside her, but the moment her fingers touched the surface, she pulled her hand back.

Something about the texture felt ... wrong.

She turned her head and instantly jumped toward Lucian the moment she saw dozens of bugs on the wall.

"Ugh, no! Lucian! I touched them!" she shouted, frantically shaking her hands like she was trying to fling her skin off. "Gross, gross, gross!"

[Foul language detected! Penalty minus 20 C-Points!]

"Is there something on me?! Get it off! Get it off!" she cried, thrusting her hands toward Lucian like they were on fire. She couldn’t even bear to look, turning her face away in pure disgust.

"There’s nothing on your hand," Lucian said gently as he took her hand and wiped it with a handkerchief. He carefully cleaned off the dust and something a little sticky, probably left behind by those bugs. "They’re dead, Medeia."

Medeia shuddered. "I don’t care if they’re dead! The real question is, why were those gross things even there?!"

Lucian leaned closer to the wall to take a better look. Medeia cringed just watching him because there was no way she’d ever put her face that close to a bunch of bugs.

"I think the yetis eat them," Lucian said. "Maybe that’s why they’re not interested in us?"

"Seriously?" Medeia asked, raising an eyebrow.

Lucian nodded. "Some of the bugs looked like they’d been bitten. So yeah, I think it’s the yetis."

"Actually ... people in a world like this eat bugs too," Lucian added casually. "They’re packed with protein."

Medeia gagged on the spot. The idea of eating bugs made her stomach turn. If she had to survive in this world without the system’s help, she’d rather starve than put one of those creepy things in her mouth.

"You... you haven’t eaten bugs before, right?" she asked suspiciously.

Lucian paused for a second, then said quietly, "I have."

Medeia’s eyes went wide with horror. She looked at him like he just admitted something unforgivable. She had kissed that mouth. Many times! And now that she knew it had once chewed bugs, she suddenly didn’t want to go anywhere near it.

"I—I don’t want to kiss you anymore!" she said, stepping back dramatically.

Lucian’s face turned pale. "No! I swear I haven’t eaten bugs in years! I’ll brush my teeth five times a day—no, ten! Please don’t ban my mouth from kissing you!"
