Surviving the Apocalypse: All I Want Is to Find a Husband-Chapter 184: The Wrong Target
Chapter 184: The Wrong Target
[Not entirely, Host.]
[Some information is classified, and the system has no access to it.]
Medeia huffed. "Not even if I bribe you with gold coins?"
[Correct. Classified information cannot be unlocked through payment.]
Now that was interesting. The system had never once turned down an opportunity to rob her.
[What exactly do you want to know, Host?]
"Take a guess."
[You want to know about the soldiers’ past?]
"Bingo." Medeia sighed. "But let me guess ... It’s classified?"
[Correct.]
[Where’s the fun in knowing everything without a little adventure?]
Ugh. She didn’t want an adventure.
All she wanted was to spend the entire day sprawled out in bed, doing absolutely nothing, except maybe getting thoroughly fucked by Lucian all day.
Was that too much to ask?
"What a jerk."
[Cursing the system is prohibited.]
[Penalty -50 C-points.]
Medeia blinked. Wow. It had been a while since the system actually punished her for swearing. She still cursed occasionally, but not nearly as much as before.
It seemed like the system had succeeded in changing her, even just a little.
"You’re here." Max’s gaze sharpened as she stepped into the meeting room.
Medeia barely spared him a glance as she walked in. She didn’t know why he was still staring at her like that, but honestly? She didn’t care.
"Where are the others? Didn’t I tell Ulrich to wait here too?" she asked, sliding into a chair.
"Dr. Ulrich is resting to save his energy. He’ll be here half an hour before the soldiers wake up," Max said evenly. "Ethan went to see Sister Jeanne. She promised to try healing his fingers, the ones that got damaged by the Bifrost."
Medeia nodded. "And you? No break for you?" She tilted her head. "You could’ve just asked Tian or Harry to take over for a while."
"No need." His fingers tapped against the table, once, twice. Then he stilled. "I was actually waiting for you."
Before she could react, he was on his feet. In a flash, he was in front of her, a gun pressed firmly against her forehead. His grip was steady, finger hovering over the trigger.
Medeia didn’t even blink.
Bear, however, wasn’t nearly as composed. The black wolf lunged, teeth sinking into Max’s leg. He let out a sharp breath, pain flickering across his face, but his hand didn’t waver.
"Calm down, Bear," Medeia murmured, her tone eerily casual. "It’s just child’s play."
Max hesitated. His grip on the gun faltered, just for a second. "You ... you really act like a demon."
"Who said I’m not?" A smile curled at Medeia’s lips, her gaze turning sharp. "Tell me, Maxie, what exactly are you trying to do here? If you pull that trigger, we’re both dead."
She was lying. She could dodge the gun easily, but where was the fun in that?
But one thing she wasn’t lying about: if Max pulled the trigger, he wouldn’t live to see another day. Lucian would make sure of that.
’Show me his ability.’
[Name: Max Adler
Age: 23
Ability:
Silent Zone (Grade-B) — Effect: Can mute all sound within a small area (3-meter radius) for up to 4 minutes.]
No wonder he hadn’t looked the least bit worried when Bear barked so loudly. It turned out he had already soundproofed the entire room.
Max let out a low chuckle. "Dead?" His voice was almost mocking. "My life has never mattered. The only thing I’ve ever wanted is to see Lucian Charon in a coffin."
Medeia’s gaze sharpened. Charon. No one had ever told Max Lucian’s surname, yet somehow, he knew.
She didn’t like that.
"You picked the wrong person to go after," she said calmly, "You can’t kill him."
Max lifted the corner of his mouth slowly. "I know." His tone was light as he said, "That’s why I want to kill his heart instead."
Medeia studied his face carefully, noticing the flicker of deep hatred behind his eyes. She had always known he wasn’t exactly a polite young man, but she hadn’t expected him to take things this far.
He hated Lucian, but she didn’t know why.
"Then what are you waiting for?" she said, tilting her head slightly. "Shoot me."
She took a step forward, close enough that the gun was practically touching her forehead. Bear growled low in his throat, but she raised a hand, signaling him to stay put.
"But kiddo," Medeia continued, her tone soft, almost playful, "let me give you a little lesson first."
Before Max could react, she moved quickly. Her fingers wrapped around his wrist, twisting it in just the right way to make him lose his grip on the gun. In the same second, she flipped it around, pressing the barrel against his skull.
He held his breath for a moment.
Medeia leaned in slightly, her voice dropping to a whisper. "If you really want to kill someone, you shoot the moment you get the chance. Hesitate, and you’ll end up as the corpse instead."
She was just about to pull the trigger when the system’s familiar voice echoed in her mind.
[Ding! Hidden Quest Activated!]
[Discover the reason why Max wants to kill Lucian.]
[Reward: Level +2]
Medeia barely resisted the urge to roll her eyes. Of course, her system would turn this into a quest.
But hey! Who was she to turn down free rewards? Leveling up twice without grinding for experience points? That was a damn good deal.
Medeia held back. Instead of pulling the trigger, she casually removed the magazine from the gun. The bullets spilled onto the floor, clinking against the tiles, a sharp reminder of Max’s failure.
She sighed, stretching her arms as if this whole thing bored her. "I’m not in the mood to kill anyone today."
With a flick of her wrist, she tossed the empty gun across the room. Then, like nothing had happened, she sank back into her chair, crossed her legs, and rested her chin on her hand.
She smiled. "So, why don’t we just talk, Maxie?"
