Surviving in the Beast World with a System-Chapter 61: Also an Herb
The moment Wu Yue spoke, the females beside her burst out laughing. "It’s amazing there’s even one leaf left."
There was no malice in their words, and Shui, standing nearby, smiled sheepishly. "I have a lot of cubs at home, so we rarely have any food left over.
I had to hide this leaf just to save it. Otherwise, those little rascals would have definitely found and eaten it."
Wu Yue looked at the wilted leaf in her hand, feeling a pang in her heart. "It’s okay. Just seeing this leaf is enough for me to find the plant."
She smiled at the females around her. "My Amu taught me about this medicinal herb before."
"You’re saying this is a medicinal herb?" Shui asked in surprise, staring at the tiny leaf in her hand.
Wu Yue nodded. "Yes. We eat a lot of meat, so if you get painful sores in your mouth, eating more of this herb can help."
All the females looked at her with respect. Shui sidled up to Wu Yue. "Yue, are you a witch?"
Wu Yue gave a wry smile. "I’m not a witch. My Amu was a Witch Disciple, so she understands some herbs. She used to teach me about them when she took me gathering."
The females breathed a collective sigh of relief, then gathered around Wu Yue again to discuss the wild vegetables.
The Beastmen here simply called all edible plants "wild vegetables." Even the name for the bitter greens they had gathered previously was one Wu Yue had come up with, and Qinghua and Qingcao had followed her lead.
After Wu Yue told them the plant was called a "dandelion," the women looked at the leaf in Shui’s hand, their expressions a mixture of confusion and disbelief. "But it doesn’t look anything like a lion."
"Witches give herbs such strange names."
The females chattered away, discussing the name "dandelion." Wu Yue, sensing her work was done, wisely excused herself from the conversation. Otherwise, she would have been bombarded with an endless stream of questions.
After another half hour of walking, Grandma Hua Shu finally stopped before a patch of forest. "Everyone, listen up. Once we’re in the woods, don’t stray too far from the group, and don’t go beyond the males’ patrol perimeter.
Even though we’re not far from the tribe, wild beasts still prowl these parts. Understood?" 𝙧𝙚𝙚𝔀𝒆𝓫𝓷𝙤𝓿𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝙤𝓶
The females shouted in affirmation. Grandma Hua Shu wasted no more words and waved her hand, signaling for everyone to spread out and start gathering.
She, however, called Wu Yue to her side. "Yue, this is your first time gathering with our group. Why don’t you stick with me today?"
As she spoke, she led the way to a shadier spot. "Amu Ye Duo told me you got hurt while you were gathering?"
Wu Yue nodded in embarrassment. "I’ve been frail since I was little, so my Father and Amu never let me join the tribe’s gathering parties. Last time was my first time trying on my own, and that’s how I got hurt."
Hua Shu nodded. "Then you’d better get used to it quickly. You don’t have a mate yet. If you don’t hone your gathering skills, you’ll go hungry."
Wu Yue nodded. "I understand. Thank you, Grandma Hua Shu."
Hua Shu waved her hand. "In a few days, we’ll go to the Clan Leader to trade for salt. Each tribe member has a set quota, so you need to gather enough food to trade for your full share.
If you only have enough food to trade for part of your salt, the rest will be claimed by those with food to spare."
She added with a wink at Wu Yue, "Like my family, for instance."
