Chapter 119: PURPLE FLOWERS

Mo An escorted Lin Xu, Yan Mei, and the kids toward a well-hidden house at the corner of the residence. The place was huge, with wooden décor, but it looked like it hadn’t been touched for years.

"We are here," Mo An said with an awkward smile. "You’ll be staying here from now on. Some maids will be sent over, and you can choose out of the twelve which you would like to serve you. I’ll take my leave now."

Just as Mo An was about to leave, Lin Xu stopped her. "Wait," she said softly, glancing around the quiet courtyard. "This house... who did it belong to before?"

Mo An’s eyes flickered slightly before she replied in a calm but low voice, "It used to be the quarters of my mother... and Mo Ying’s."

Her words made Lin Xu and Yan Mei exchange quick glances. For a moment, no one spoke.

Mo An hesitated, then said quietly, "I don’t know who you are or why my brother has been obsessed with you for so long, but the fact that he gave you our mother’s quarters shows how much he values you."

She paused, her gaze lingering briefly on Lin Xu before she turned to leave.

Her words stayed in Lin Xu’s mind as she stood there in silence.

They sat at a small round table in the middle of the neat courtyard. Purple flowers decorated its edges, their scent soft in the air. The place was quiet, almost too quiet.

"Mother," little Mo Bao asked, tilting his head, "are we going to stay here from now on?"

Lin Xu hesitated, glancing at the still, old walls before nodding. "Yes... for now, we’ll stay here."

"Then can we choose our rooms?" Mo Yiling asked excitedly.

Lin Xu smiled faintly. "Go on, pick whichever you like."

Mo Bao and Mo Yiling grinned and ran off toward the inner hall, their laughter echoing softly. But Mo Yuen stayed behind. He stood quietly, then walked closer and hugged his mother’s waist tightly.

"If you’re not happy being with Papa Ying," he said in a small voice, "then we should just leave."

Lin Xu froze slightly, meeting Yan Mei’s eyes over his head. Yan Mei gave her a quiet, knowing look. Lin Xu exhaled slowly, crouched down, and pinched Mo Yuen’s cheeks gently.

"Silly boy," she whispered with a small smile. "Mama’s fine. Don’t worry about me, alright?"

He looked at her for a moment before nodding, then hugged her again before running inside to join his siblings.

When the courtyard grew quiet, Yan Mei leaned back slightly, her tone casual but curious. "So... you’re really going to marry Mo Ying? With all those wives around?"

Lin Xu blinked, then looked away. "That depends... if he’s capable of keeping his word."

Yan Mei sighed softly and took her hand. "Whatever you decide, I’ll stand by you. Always."

Lin Xu’s lips curved faintly. "I know."

The two women sat there in silence for a moment, the soft rustle of the purple flowers swaying around them.

After some time, Lin Xu and Yan Mei started to feel more comfortable in the quiet house. It was big, seven rooms in total, with its own kitchen, a small garden at the back, and two private rooms that looked peaceful and neat.

Yan Mei had looked around earlier and said with a grin, "This place is huge! Almost like a small palace."

Now, they were sitting in the courtyard again. Lin Xu crossed her legs and took a sip of tea, while Yan Mei sat beside her, munching on some nuts. The children were busy playing near the flowerbed, their laughter filling the air.

Soon, footsteps came from the gate.

"Lady Lin," a calm voice called. It was Miss Han, the head maid of the Mo residence. She walked in with twelve young maids behind her, all dressed neatly and standing in a line with their heads bowed.

Miss Han bowed slightly. "General Mo ordered that these twelve maids be brought to you, my lady. You may choose the ones you want to serve you."

Lin Xu nodded and placed her cup down, studying the girls quietly.

Yan Mei leaned closer and whispered, "You look like you’re picking soldiers, not maids."

Lin Xu gave her a quick look. "You have a point," she muttered, but a small smile showed on her face.

The maids introduced themselves one after another, and Lin Xu listened carefully.

Yan Mei whispered again, "Pick the quiet ones. The talkative ones will only cause trouble."

Lin Xu chuckled softly. "You might be right."

After thinking for a bit, Lin Xu pointed at five of them. "These five will stay."

Miss Han nodded and told the others to leave. "Yes, my lady."

When they were gone, Yan Mei stretched and smiled. "You say you’re not staying here long, but you already look settled."

Lin Xu took another sip of tea, her eyes looking ahead. "Maybe," she said quietly. "But peaceful days never last for long."

Yan Mei stopped smiling, glancing at her friend, noticing the worry behind her calm face.

Lin Xu stood and faced the five maids, her tone calm but firm. "Listen carefully. Two of you will handle cleaning, one will take care of the kitchen, one will look after the children, and one will stay by my side."

The maids bowed quickly, answering together, "Yes, my lady."

She nodded. "Good. You may start with your duties."

Four of them turned and left quietly to begin working. Only one maid remained, the one Lin Xu had chosen to stay close to her. She looked a bit older than the others, maybe around twenty-five. Her posture was straight, and her eyes were calm.

Lin Xu looked at her for a moment, then said softly, "You’ve been in the Mo residence for a while, haven’t you?"

The maid bowed slightly. "Yes, my lady. I have served here for sixteen years."

Lin Xu hesitated before asking, "Then you must have known the General’s mother. Tell me... what kind of person was she? And why did she stay in such a quiet, hidden place?"

The maid’s eyes dimmed slightly as she lowered her gaze. "The first madam was a gentle woman," she began slowly. "She didn’t like arguments or fights, so she stayed away from the rest of the family. This courtyard was her own little world, peaceful and quiet. She spent most of her time here, reading, sewing, and tending to her flowers."

Lin Xu listened quietly, her fingers tightening slightly around her sleeve.

The maid continued softly, "After the madam passed away, the late General ordered this place to be closed. No one was allowed to live here or even step inside. It stayed locked for years... until now."

She paused, then added in a low voice, "The General personally reopened it for you, my lady. No one else was ever given that honor."

Lin Xu’s heart gave a small, uneven beat at the words. She looked around the courtyard again the purple flowers. That explained why the entire residence was filled with them. They had been Mo Ying’s mother’s favorite.

But why was she so important to him? Just why? If he cared about her that much, then why those three years of pain? Why all those women he married? Just why?
