Surgery Godfather-Chapter 363 - 0344 Training in Progress
Chapter 363: Chapter 0344 Training in Progress
At the fruit store on the first floor of Tri-Bo Hotel, the Kyoho grapes were all sold out.
The store owner didn’t know why today’s winds blew such a fruitful sale, and why the grapes were selling like hotcakes, particularly to this fat customer who didn’t want any other fruit but the grapes.
“Would you like to try one? They’re sweet!” the owner offered one.
Fatty tasted one and liked it. He picked more than a dozen more, tasted them and wanted to try more. The shopkeeper did not stop him, but he had a painful expression on his face.
“I’ll take them all, sprinkle water on them to keep them moist and pack them up. Do you have more stock?” Fatty brushed his hands and glanced at the shopkeeper.
“Yes, there are two more boxes of new arrivals, do you want them?” the boss immediately opened the packaging to show Fatty.
“I’ll take them all. Can you deliver?” Fatty was feeling quite generous.
“Of course!” The boss felt as though he had stumbled upon a goldmine.
The boss swiftly packed and weighed the grapes, while the boss’s wife helped, grinning from ear to ear, “Take a look at our other fruits, do you want any? Durians from Thailand, smell how fragrant they are?”
“Do you have olives?” Fatty looked around.
The boss shook his head, “No olives at this time of the year.”
No olives, he thought, but he could casually buy other fruits for that Japanese girl to play with, even though she couldn’t really carve.
Why assign such a task, making Fatty to search everywhere for olives, whether fresh or dried, none were found.
The boss carefully packed the grapes into cardboard boxes, then loaded the boxes onto a store trolley. Per Fatty’s instruction, he began to deliver them to the Department of Orthopedics.
To show off his own generosity, the boss selected a watermelon as a gift to send along with the grapes.
The issue with the grapes was resolved, but there was no sign of the olives. Fatty could only seek help from the all-knowing moment and someone replied: “Olives, also known as Qingguo, is available in traditional Chinese medicine stores.”
Fatty immediately ran to the outpatient department of Traditional Chinese Medicine to ask. So there was Qingguo, which was olive. He immediately asked the old traditional Chinese medicine doctor to help him get a kilo, and with that, the ingredients for training were finally complete.
To benefit from someone’s favour, one should show gratitude. No choice, one of the conditions was that he could eat grapes every day, without limit.
Every day after surgery, the Orthopedics laboratory was very busy. Several microscopes were in continual use. Song Zimo, Takahashi, Xu Zhiliang, and others were all peeling grape skin with focused attention.
Peeling grape skins is a basic skill in microsurgery. Microscopes are most popular in Orthopedics, Ophthalmology, and Neurosurgery, less so in other departments.
Surgeons practice microsurgery using grapes with a three-step training method, both strict and fun.
A disposable cup is filled with water, a fresh grape is placed in the water, then the cup is sealed with a latex glove, tightly knotted to cover the cup opening.
Step one, cut open the sealed latex piece, and use a microscope tweezer to take the grape out of the cup. The tweezers must not pierce the grape skin when taking it out, otherwise it is considered a fail.
Step two, under the microscope, use microscopic scissors and tweezers to fully peel off the grape skin. The grape skin shouldn’t have any cuts or deficiencies, and the pulp should be smooth without any peeling, otherwise it is considered a fail.
Step three, cut open the sealed latex piece, silk-stitch the opening closed with 7-0 needle and thread, and do not let any water leak when the cup is inverted, otherwise it is considered a fail.
According to Yang Ping’s training requirements, the content of this three-step training method is only the basic level.
Song Zimo, Takahashi, and Xu Zhiliang are currently practicing high-expert level procedures. Peeling the grape skin completely doesn’t even count as the first step. The skin of the grape needs to be divided into three layers — complete and unbroken three layers. Only if each layer doesn’t break or miss any parts, it is considered a pass.
Dividing the grape skin into layers, each additional layer exponentially increases the difficulty.
Being able to completely separate two layers is the peak of the pyramid; being able to completely separate three layers is the pinnacle of the peak.
Several people focused on the microscope, and with tiny tweezers and scissors, they were carefully dissecting the grape skin. The operation was incredibly slow, any carelessness could lead to failure.
So far, no one has been able to completely separate two layers. Song Zimo performed the best by separating two layers but one layer had a few small holes.
If only separating two layers is this difficult, when can they manage three layers?
Every consumed grape and grape skin was thrown into the trash can. Fatty never eats grapes that have been peeled, even when his terms for procuring them was to have an unlimited stock of fresh, untouched grapes.
Fujiwara Miyuki was practicing arthroscopy on a seed core. The specially made long-armed carving tools were about the same length and size as the usual arthroscopy tools.
These are tools specially provided by Yang Ping for Song Zimo. When training Song Zimo’s arthroscopy skills, carving models of knee and shoulder joints from seed cores, that was a basic requirement.
Fujiwara Miyuki clearly had not found her rhythm yet. The seed core slipped away from her instruments from time to time. Once she finally stabilized the seed core, the tip of the carving instrument refused to cooperate. She wasn’t impatient, though. She kept trying with the hope of getting it right.
Zhang Lin and Little Five each held a hook in one hand, as if they were statues, motionless. The end of the hook had a small hole with an iron block hanging from a string. This kind of iron block was usually used for bone traction. The timer on the phone lightly ticked away.
“There’s only half an hour to go, I can’t hold on anymore, Little Five.” Zhang Lin’s hand began to shake, with veins throbbing in his arm.
“Hang in there a bit longer. Your stamina really is lacking. No wonder your wife hasn’t shown any signs of pregnancy yet.” Little Five derided Zhang Lin but compared to Zhang Lin, he seemed far better. His hand holding the hook was steady, not budging a millimeter.
“Little Five, will you ever admit when you’re out of it? I bet half the basketball team could have been here by now. Just look at you, you’re clearly worn out. Let go before you injure your tendon.”
“If you want to let go, do it on your own, and don’t look for excuses to strike up a conversation, trying to distract me.”
The two had a bet. The loser had to treat the winner to a meal if their daily training sessions ended on odd numbers. Zhang Lin was taken aback by Little Five’s stamina. His complexion was like that of a woman’s, which misled Zhang Lin into thinking he was weak. But now, more than half an hour had gone by, and yet his grip had not weakened.
“You’re squandering good grapes, what a pity.” Fatty sat off to the side, peeling and eating grapes.
“Fatty, don’t just pick the large ones, leave some for us.” After peeling a grape, Song Zimo greeted Fatty.
“Smaller grapes are good for practicing skills, I’m doing you a favor.” Fatty expertly squeezed the fruit out of their skins and popped them into his mouth. Almost simultaneously, he tossed the skins and seeds into a nearby trash can.
The bunch was now bare, and Fatty reached for another one to peel.
“We have to make our mark in this year’s Golden Knife Award under the guidance of Dr. Yang. I have to stop eating and practice.” Fatty sprang up from his chair.
An anesthesiologist needed to practice intubation, various punctures, medical box pulling, and operating the anesthesia machine.
In a surgical team, the anesthesiologist is a hidden boss, responsible for sustaining the patient’s life. Although they often operate behind the scenes, their role is only second to that of the chief surgeon.
With Yang Ping’s help, Fatty managed to pull out a scrapped anesthesia machine from the equipment department’s warehouse for practice. Fatty disassembled the machine and then reassembled it. However, after reassembling, there were still a few parts left on the floor. He didn’t know where they were supposed to go.
Obliged to start again, he disassembled the machine once more. Fatty was determined to fully understand the internal structure and principles of the anesthesia machine, and to be able to disassemble and reassemble it himself.
Once this was mastered, he would learn about the purpose and principles of each button, and practice operating the anesthesia machine with his eyes closed.
In contrast with his medical box training, during operations, anesthesiologists often need to open their medical boxes and retrieve various medications to save lives. Any delay or mistake, due to unfamiliarity with the medical supplies, would waste precious time.
When Fatty practiced pulling the medical box, he was able to open and close the drawers repeatedly without missteps, his movements neither too slow nor too fast. Opening the box, grabbing the medicine, uncapping the bottle, drawing up the medicine, and administering an injection – all done smoothly in one swift motion.
Then there was intubation training. Not satisfied with practicing on a model, Fatty moved on to practicing on rabbits. Without anesthesia, he had to successfully intubate the rabbits while they resisted.
For puncture practice, he also used rabbits. Sadly, the poor creatures were pricked countlessly under his needle. Even though the anatomy of rabbits differed greatly from that of humans, the practice allowed Fatty to improve his techniques.
To secure his standing in the team, Fatty had to make some sacrifices. Now, he was known for his exemplary intubation skills. When a patient was difficult to intubate in the Anesthesia Department, Emergency Department, or ICU, they knew to call on Orthopedics Department’s Liang Fatty.
Who is Liang Fatty?
The toad on the plane who wanted to eat swan meat, oh right, the guy who smokes Zhonghua cigarettes.
Eventually, Zhang Lin couldn’t take it anymore and was the first to let go of the hook, which dropped onto the cushion.
“Director Zhang, you’re wilting, unlike Director Lu, who’s more steadfast,” Fatty teased after a while of training and then took a break himself.
Zhang Lin waved away the comment, acknowledging defeat, but Little Five continued to hang in there.
Fatty, seemingly finding the answers, stated: “I see. Director Lu’s wife is pregnant, so he’s conserving energy. You, Director Zhang, are still sowing your seeds, shedding energy in the process. It makes sense you lost this round.”
“What the hell goes through your mind? Any cigarettes on you?” Asked Zhang Lin.

“Haven’t you quit smoking?” Fatty questioned.
Recalling his decision, Zhang Lin said: “Oh, never mind.”
“Want to go somewhere for a smoke?” Little Five put down the hook.
“The restroom?”
