Chapter 74: The shadow victims travels.

"Are they safe?"

Kai asked as he slowly descended to the ground, already back in his human form, the dark mask secured over his face.

He could not fly in the traditional sense; he had no skill or racial ability that allowed him to wield that specific type of magic.

However, using the skill [Air Manipulation], he was able to manipulate the currents to carry his weight, allowing him to soar through the air, even if it wasn’t as efficient or graceful as true flight.

Touching down softly on the grass, the first thing he noticed was the relief washing over Leo and Sophia’s faces.

In stark contrast, Carlotta looked at them with unmasked disgust, as though the mere sight of them smiling at her master made her want to vomit.

Eventually, she tore her gaze away from the "filth" and focused on her Lord, her head bowing in immediate reverence.

"Yes, my Lord, it is just as i have reported. I have reprimanded the assassins that dared to do such a thing. They are safe now."

"Hm."

As he walked closer, he scanned the surrounding area.

The bodies of the assassins were scattered in pieces—limbs separated from torsos, heads missing entirely.

One thing was for sure: Carlotta did not hold back on the killing.

"You did a fine job," Kai replied.

He reached out and placed his hand on her head.

Carlotta froze instantly; it wasn’t the reaction she was expecting.

"I have uncovered the one behind all this. While I do intend to get my revenge on them, I would much rather we settle this business exchange first. Do you not agree?"

’This should calm her down a bit. She is getting overly worked up for some reason. Her killing intent is leaking out.’

And to his surprise, it worked perfectly.

Carlotta, who was moments before filled with seething anger, instantly subsided. Her face rounded like a doll’s as she allowed her master to pet her, emitting weird, stifled giggles while a euphoric smile glued itself to her face.

"What are you, a cat?" Kai laughed softly.

Then, he turned to look at the two humans at the side.

’Hm? Why are they looking at me like that? This is a perfectly normal thing to do for a subordinate.’

Kai could be wrong, but he was certain they were judging him from afar. Or perhaps they were terrified of the woman who had just slaughtered a dozen men being treated like a house pet.

Either way, it was getting weird for him.

He pulled his hand away and cleared his throat, his demeanor shifting back to business.

"Anyway. We need to focus on the next course of action. As it stands, we do not have a means of transport, so getting to Goldmore might be far more difficult than intended."

"And we don’t have the goods, either. Which is a shame since that was our entire product line. I am sorry, Mr. Aron... I should have known something like this would happen." Leo looked at the ground, guilt written all over his face. 𝕗𝐫𝐞𝕖𝕨𝐞𝗯𝚗𝕠𝘃𝐞𝚕.𝐜𝗼𝚖

Carlotta was still dotting on Kai, barely paying any attention to what was happening around her. She was likely contemplating whether to grab Kai’s hand and put it back on her head, or just hug him where he stood.

In the meantime, Kai’s entire focus was on the humans.

"It is not your fault. Even I failed to predict their move," Kai lied smoothly to ease their morale. "That said, your concern for the goods is wasted. I have secured the product and made sure it is all accounted for. As I said, our main concern is transport. Even if I can walk all the way there, I doubt it would be the same for you two."

"We can do it!" Leo uttered back immediately, his face lighting up with determination. "We are close to Goldmore already. If Lord Shadow was able to secure the goods like you said, then we can walk, right Sophia?"

Sophia nodded in response, trying her best to look just as motivated, though her legs were trembling.

Kai stared at them for a minute longer.

’Are they insane? They want to walk all the way to Goldmore? That is at least 7 or 8 miles away on rough terrain. I am a boss monster with infinite stamina, and even I know not to walk when I don’t have to. But then again, seeing the looks on their faces...’

He sighed internally.

’I could fly us there, which is the logical option. But I kind of want to see how deep their conviction runs. It’s a good test of loyalty.’

"Very well," he replied. "Shall we walk then?"

A smile glued to their lips as they nodded their heads, ready to set out.

...

A few hours later, in Goldmore Town.

A hired carriage rode into the town.

It was a small settlement, so the locals were quick to turn their heads to check who the new arrivals were.

Goldmore was known to be a town of trade, meaning a lot of merchants came and went.

And along with their presence came the hateful stares of the locals who despised outsiders profiting off their land.

Although Kai could not really tell why they would be staring at him as though he had killed one of their own, the hostility was clear as day.

It wasn’t directed at him per se, since he was hidden inside the carriage, but the heavy atmosphere was obvious.

"I can’t believe those two humans made you carry them until we flagged down a ride. My Lord, are you not caring for them a bit too much?" Carlotta voiced out.

She was seated on the opposite side of the carriage, her arms crossed.

On the bench next to her, Leo and Sophia were fast asleep, leaning on each other, completely exhausted from the miles they had attempted to walk before Kai had intervened.

Kai halted his thoughts, looking at their sleeping faces.

’Right, I can see why she would think that. Come to think of it, I am being a bit soft on them. Is it because they somehow remind me of my human side? Or simply because they are useful tools?’

Thinking for a while, he looked at Carlotta.

"If this bothers you, then I promise to provide the same level of care for you when we arrive back at the dungeon."

Carlotta’s eyes sparkled, her earlier complaint simply vanishing into thin air.

"You mean it, my Lord?! I get to sleep in your bed as well?"

Kai flinched.

"I... yes, I suppose. But do not think of anything weird."

"Hehehe!~" She basically melted into the chair, lost in a fantasy that Kai definitely did not want to know the details of.

After a while, the carriage stopped right in front of the distributing company.

It looked like a regular, large house, but one could see the multiple warehouses surrounding the main building, with workers loading wagons to transport goods out of the town.

When Kai stepped out, the first thing he did was give Carlotta a simple order.

"Take Leo and Sophia and allow them to rest in the inn down the street. When we are leaving, we will wake them up."

Kai was rather surprised when Carlotta chose to follow that order without so much as a frown.

For a second there, he was suspicious of her; the thought of her killing them in their sleep was not completely out of the question.

But she hoisted them up effortlessly and marched off toward the inn.

Once she was away, Kai faced the building. Just when he was about to step toward the entrance, an old man walked up to him from the side, leaning on a cane.

"Are you here to sell an item, young man? I am afraid if that is the case, deals are closed for now."
