Chapter 73: Action and Reaction

“Thank you. Our marriage is going well,” I replied with a blatant lie before showing him a bright smile.

Our marriage was going so well that my wife had risked her life climbing out the balcony to make her escape.

Just thinking about Dahlia’s foolish attempt at making as escape gave me a headache. I watched as everyone headed for the door after the meeting came to an end. By that time, I had been sitting way too long and it was a miracle that I could still feel my feet. I knew that I had to go outside and get some action before being stuck in the office turned me into an old man.

“Mr. Vulkan...” I heard a woman’s voice calling my name.

A young woman working in Anthony’s PR team popped her head into the meeting room before looking around as if to check if I was alone. I could already sense that trouble was coming my way as I watched her approach me with a slightly nervous smile.

What is her name again?

“Is something the matter?” I asked while feigning interest when I couldn’t care less.

“Actually, I thought that I should show you this in case you haven’t already seen it,” she said as she handed me her phone.

“What is it?” I asked as I took her phone from her hand.

“Lady Diana has posted something on her social media channels and it’s getting a lot of attention,” she announced while sounding quite pleased.

Diana posted something?

I looked at the photo on a social media page that was displayed on the woman’s phone. The account was Diana’s official social media account. Not surprisingly, the photo garnered a lot of public attention from her high number of followers. At first, I felt like there was nothing noteworthy about the photo of a beautiful Diana smiling while wearing a white robe with her hair blowing in the wind. That was until I started feeling like the statue behind her looked quite familiar.

My fingers moved quickly to zoom in to focus on the view behind her as I narrowed my eyes. I should have known since the moment that I saw her that the woman that I was seeing was in fact Dahlia and not her twin sister. After all, it didn’t make sense for Diana to post anything now that she was still on the run because it could give away her location. The fact that this photo was definitely taken in the garden in front of the mansion told me that it had to be Dahlia and that she had decided to step out of her room.

She looked extremely happy in the photo. Even though I knew that it was probably fake and just for show, I still felt satisfied enough with the fact that she had decided to come out of her room. It seemed like my decision to allow her to roam outside the mansion was the correct one. My thoughts and mood darkened once more when my eyes drifted down to read the caption of the photo that she had posted.

‘Enjoying life as a married woman. Sorry for not updating you all on my life since I got married. Worry not! I will be updating you all soon on my awesome life with my awesome hubby!’

The caption ended with a few too many heart and smiling emoticons that made the message sound even cheesier than it already sounded. My eyes narrowed as I reread the caption while wondering what kind of mischievous and troublesome plan Dahlia had come up with this time around. I didn’t need to be a genius to figure out that sooner or later she intended to pull me into this stupid project that she had started.

“What are we supposed to do about this?” I asked as I slid the phone across the table toward its owner.

“As of now, there’s nothing that we need to do. We’ll study the reactions that this post receives for now. So far everything seems very positive, and everyone is excited that she is back to updating her social media accounts, and of course, they are eager for more based on what she has written,” the woman replied.

“I see...” I muttered while thinking that that was probably exactly what Dahlia was aiming for.

The phone call that I had with my father suddenly came to mind. It seemed like one troublesome thing was stacking up on top of another in an endless loop.

“What does my plan for the day look like?” I asked the woman while suddenly remembering that on top of the fact that she was part of Anthony’s PR team, she also acted as his secretary of sorts from time to time on top of his personal secretary.

“After wrapping up the meeting at the office, you have dinner planned with one of our longstanding clients at a private restaurant. Please keep the dinner at no longer than two hours because after that, you are expected to attend a charity auction event,” she replied.

“I’ll attend the meeting but please cancel everything else,” I replied while trying to sound caring, polite, and just like Anthony.

The reality was that I couldn’t care less about the dinner with the client or the charity auction where everyone would simply pretend to care about the good cause when in reality everyone was there to flaunt their wealth at the auction. I stared at the face of the woman while wondering if her name was Celine or Selena. It would have been rude to ask her again...such a mess... 𝒻𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝘯𝘰𝑣ℯ𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝘮

“Are you sure about that? Did something come up all of a sudden?” she asked with concern.

I thought that she wasn’t the brightest given the fact that she was the one that had just told me that ‘something’ had come up. While maintaining a presentable smile, I resisted the urge to simply stand up from my seat and walk out of the room.

“I feel a little tired. I think I haven’t had enough sleep for a few days in a row. Plus, I think I’ll go home and have dinner with my wife,” I replied before showing her Anthony’s sweet smile.
