Chapter 333: We Live and We Learn

From what she was saying, I believed that I had kind of figured out how things worked out between her and her man; however, I needed to ask in order to be sure. After telling her everything, I felt like it was only fair that she shared with me what went on in her life from the moment that she ran away and quit being Diana.

"What about you? What happened to you?" I asked as I braced myself to face the truth.

Diana took in a shuddering breath before letting it out slowly. Clearly, the question that I had just asked her was difficult for her to answer, and she needed time to process her words. Fortunately, it felt like we had all the time in the world to catch up with each other.

"We broke up," Diana announced, getting right to the point.

I wished that I could say that I was surprised by this unfortunate development of events, but in reality, it would be more accurate for me to say that I saw this coming from miles away. Ever since the moment that I was told me that she had eloped with a man that she thought was the love of her life, I knew that she wasn’t making the right decision. Just like the many times before when she thought that she had found the man for her, her unconventional taste in men that were supposed to be off-limits had brought nothing but disaster. Of course, I prayed very hard for her well-being, hoping that she would get it right this time around, but it seemed that the end of her love story this time was not any different than the ones before.

"What happened?" I asked because I felt like I had the right to know.

After taking her place and making many sacrifices, I felt that the least my sister could do was give me the details of how her relationship went wrong.

"He didn’t turn out the way that I thought he would. I thought that he loved me and that he would do anything and everything for me, but that wasn’t the case. When I ran away, I thought that I had more than enough money to live in comfort, at least for a very long while, but it turned out that it wasn’t enough for him," Diana said solemnly before shrugging her shoulders as if to signal that it couldn’t be helped.

"He was just a driver and a pair of hands that was hired by our family. What else were you expecting?" I asked, not hiding the bitterness in my voice.

Honestly speaking, I was quite disappointed at how my sister never seemed to learn from her past mistakes. It wasn’t the first time that a man approached her because he was attracted to her looks, wealth, and social status. Men would throw themselves at her feet, and she always loved their attention. I knew that my sister loved fiercely and always gave everything that she had to the man that she loved. I slightly envied her in that respect for her ability to love so freely and without regrets, no matter how disappointing and hurtful her relationships had ended. Just as I had anticipated, Diana simply covered her mouth and laughed it off.

"Stop trying to laugh it off. It hurts like hell, doesn’t it?" I asked, although it wasn’t truly a question.

"Stop asking me if you already know," then I replied before letting out a giggle.

I wanted to tell her that she should have listened to my warning, but rubbing it in her face now was useless. Once again, I was reminded that time wouldn’t rewind backwards no matter what we wanted. We can’t go back to change the past, so all we could do was focus on healing ourselves in the present so that we will be stronger and a better version of ourselves when we face the future.

"I’m sorry that things didn’t work out for you this time, Dina, but I’m sure that just as the many times before, you’ll get over it and you’ll pick yourself back up. You’ll get yourself together," I said as I placed my hands on her shoulders. My sister nodded her head slowly in agreement to my words as she tried to stop her tears.

"Stop crying. I’m sure you’ll find the right man for you sooner or later. Honestly though, I wish that you would listen to me more or that you would consult me before picking the next man to be the love of your life," I said while attempting a joke. The atmosphere around us felt so gloomy and intense that I felt like we both might snap if I didn’t put in any effort to lighten the mood.

"I feel like a selfish bitch, and I hate that I’ve gotten everything all wrong. It’s just so messed up, and I feel like I am such a failure. Most of all, I am such a failure at being a sister," my sister said before her face twisted as if she was in pain again. Even though I fully realized that this was her fault, I didn’t like the way that she was tearing herself apart because of it.

"Stop blaming yourself. Just try your best not to repeat your mistakes in the future, please," I said, almost pleadingly. 𝕗𝐫𝐞𝕖𝕨𝐞𝗯𝚗𝕠𝘃𝐞𝚕.𝐜𝗼𝚖

"First of all, I feel like everything was in vain. I ran away from my wedding to be with him, but in the end, he left me. I thought that my only sister could finally marry the man that she loves, but she ended up marrying such a dangerous man instead," my sister said as she ran her fingers through her hair.

I could sense her frustration and also her stress, and it looked like she was about to have an emotional breakdown. Diana clutched her hair and began pulling on it before she let out a frustrated cry.

"Stop it, Diana! You have to get a hold of yourself. Stop thinking and stop blaming yourself," I said as I tried to pry her fingers away from her hair.
