Chapter 245: Young Heroine

Just like that, and with countless pairs of eyes watching our every move, Dahlia’s legs gave out from under her and she collapsed onto the ground.

My body moved instinctively as I rushed to hold her in my arms to break her fall. I almost cried out her real name in the midst of my panic. Dahlia’s eyes were closed and her face did look slightly pale. Her small body felt so fragile in my arms and she also felt so light. At first it felt like time had stopped, and I could not see or hear anything except for Dahlia. It took me a short moment to figure out that she was probably just faking it. After all, what are the odds that she would mention fainting and then actually faint just a few seconds later?

When that thought occurred to me, I finally managed to calm down enough to pay attention to the situation around us. Dahlia had managed to capture everyone’s attention again and the sounds of their murmurs and chatters as they discussed and commented on what was going on filled my ears. Suddenly, countless people surrounded us although they were there more out of curiosity to see what was happening rather than there to offer any kind of real help.

“Help! Lady Diana has fainted! Please call for a doctor. Please call for help!” I yelled at the top of my lungs as I kept on holding Dahlia’s body in my arms.

Finally, someone gathered enough sense to call for the doctor. Everyone’s attention was on Dahlia’s condition and it seemed like everyone had conveniently forgotten about the horse race. I was frankly amazed at how easily she could fool everyone and capture everyone’s attention at the same time. As everyone’s attention had shifted to Dahlia, it became obvious that the horse riding contest wasn’t going to take place.

At least for me, it was clear that I wouldn’t be taking part in any contest on that day. Everything played out just as Dahlia had planned. Everyone expected me to take care of her because she was my fiancée and I had to say that it was better than risking my neck riding on Anthony’s unwilling horse on a muddy and slippery field.

The doctor came along with a few support medical staff and they helped me place Dahlia on a stretcher.

“I’ll come along...” I stated my preference firmly so that there would be no room for argument.

“Of course, please follow us this way,” the doctor replied naturally.

The crowd parted and made way for us as the doctor and his helpers helped carry the stretcher that Dahlia was on while I quickly followed after them. I could feel my father’s dissatisfied glare on me and I knew that he hated it when things didn’t go his way. He must have been so upset and angry that Dahlia managed to steal away his spotlight after all the planning that he had done associated with hosting the party and setting up the riding competition that would bring about so much trouble for me.

Despite what he felt, there was nothing that Alfred could do to go against the general sentiment of the guests. Also it wouldn’t look so great in everyone’s eyes if he merely ignored the health and safety of his future daughter-in-law.

When we arrived at the medical room, everyone busied themselves tending to Dahlia who still pretended to be unconscious. I wondered how long it would take for the doctor to figure out that Dahlia was merely faking her condition. Had I not known that she was just ting on a show, I would have been worried sick for her as well. The weather was truly hot and humid so it wouldn’t be too far of a stretch to imagine a girl like her fainting.

I was sure that the dress that she had on felt highly uncomfortable and unsuitable given the condition of the weather. Surprisingly, the doctor did not chase me out of the room and I stood to the side while giving them enough room and privacy to tend to Dahlia. What was more surprising was the fact that even after a while had passed, no one turned up to check on Dahlia.

I stared at the closed door as if I was expecting and waiting for someone to enter. However, no one ever did. Her parents never bothered to come check on the condition of their youngest daughter. Although I couldn’t understand why, I could sense that they did not care enough about their daughter to spare their time to check on her even though she practically fainted right in front of their very eyes.

“Is she ok?” I asked the doctor after they had spent some time examining Dahlia.

As if she wanted to respond to my question, Dahlia suddenly started to stir and then she woke up from her fake slumber. The doctor said some kind words to her and asked her how she felt. Dahlia had a slightly dazed look in her eyes before her expression turned into a look of confusion before she started looking around the room. When her eyes landed on me, our eyes met and then her lips curved up into a knowing smile as if she wanted to say ‘See, I told you so...’

“I’m fine. Thank you very much for helping me,” she replied to the doctor with a smile.

That’s good to hear. I guess you fainted because of the weather. It’s much hotter than normal as of late which is quite strange. You should make sure to drink a lot of water and get enough sleep. Let me know if you’re not feeling well. For now, you should just rest here,” the doctor advised kindly.

“Thank you, doctor,” Dahlia thanked the doctor with a very polite smile.

“You still look a little tired. You should go to sleep and get some rest,” the doctor recommended.

“I will. Thank you once again,” Dahlia replied to the doctor sweetly.

With a polite smile my way, the doctor and his team left the room. Now that we were alone, I found myself tongue-tied and I wasn’t sure what I should say to Dahlia.

“Well, I guess you could say that I saved you from some trouble,” Dalia said before grinning at me.

Just as I was about to give her a reply, the door to the room suddenly opened. At first, I thought that it was just about time for her parents to come and pay her a visit. But the person who entered through the door was the last person that I had expected to see.
