Chapter 19 - Who Is He?

I woke up from my slumber and noticed Kwon Nara was gone. Checking the time, I sighed.

'Oh, it's 12 PM already...?'

I groggily pulled myself out of bed and headed to the bathroom.

'At least that was the best sleep I've ever had so far.'

After freshening up, I changed back into my cadet uniform and laced up my shoes by the door.

'I should explore Eden's campus today so I don't get lost tomorrow when classes begin, and if I have time, train my stats too.'

With that plan in mind, I left my dorm room, glancing back at the number plate before the door automatically locked as I fully memorized my dorm room number '#1.10.'

Walking through the luxurious hallways of the female dorm, I carefully avoided touching anything because this place made me uneasy from the thought of accidently breaking something.

'This place is way too fancy for me. I feel like if I break something, it'll probably cost a fortune...'

The hallways were decorated with elegant paintings and various decorations. Other cadets passed by, some chatting, others focused on their own business. I got some strange glances when I walked by, but I tried ignoring them, knowing the reason they were looking at me.

'I still have no clue about the whole thing about me beating up a senior cadet at the entrance of Eden...'

I made my way to the lobby and exited the building, stepping out onto the massive campus. For most of the afternoon, I wandered around, mapping out key locations in my head.

Eventually, I arrived back at the front entrance of Eden, where a large crowd had gathered.

At first, I ignored it because it was just a bunch of first year cadets meeting their parents, but then I noticed a familiar man at the gates of Eden with a crowd gathering around him and one other.

Kim Taejune was standing there, glaring at an older man in a red coat. He had sharp, cold blue eyes, short black hair with a few strands of gray, and an intense presence that made that made me shudder.

The man spoke, his voice low and firm, "...Seems you finally bloomed and joined Eden like you always wanted... my... 'youngest son.'"

'What?'

I quickly used my skill to scan him, and my eyes widened at the information displayed before me.

[Name: Kim Hyunseok]

[Title: Bringer of Dawn, King of Swords, Korean Grim Reaper, Guild Master of Dokkaebi, Bride Killer]

[Job: Savior]

[Rank: SSS]

[Skills: [Sword God][Domination][Combo][Burst][Soul Taker][Focus] (+3 Hidden)]

[Age: 50]

[Status: Feeling a small amount of relief but mainly angered and disappointed?]

'Kim Hyunseok... The Guild Master of Dokkaebi. One of the strongest saviors in the world and Arthur's mentor in the story.'

'In the story Kim Hyunseok only had one son and very specifically the story says he had no sibling and his son has already graduated Eden before the story begins...'

'So why is he here? And why is he calling Kim Taejune his son?'

Curious about the situation, I quickly blended in with the crowd and listened carefully to their conversation.

Kim Taejune simply glared at his father as he spoke, "Don't call me that... You have only one son now, 'Kim Joonho'... You cut me off from the family, 'Dad,' for no good reason."

Kim Hyunseok's expression remained unreadable, "It was for your own safety-"

Kim Taejune's voice rose sharply, cutting him off, "So was killing Mom for my safety too?!"

'What...'

I immediately tried to gather information on Kim Hyunseok's wife using my skill and found out she 'used' to be a major character in the story, and her name was 'Lee Sooyoung,' but the moment I tried to gain more information about her, a screen appeared in front of me.

[Warning! This information is no longer accurate due to a major change in the prologue of the story, changing this character's role and status.]

'The hell?...'

Kim Hyunseok exhaled, his expression unwavering, "Yes... It was for your own safety-"

Kim Taejune cut off his father once again, "That's bullshit."

Kim Taejune spoke louder and angrier, "How is killing my mother supposed to be for my safety?! The fact still stands... you killed her, your own wife, the third strongest savior in the world, and you disowned your own son for what? 'Safety' from who?! Calamities? The Devil Himself?!"

Kim Taejune continued, whose tone shifted to a more betrayed and sorrowful tone. "What were you protecting me from that you had to kill my mom? Why did she have to die? Tell me the fucking truth for once about her death..."

Kim Hyunseok kept his cold expression as he spoke. "You want to know the truth?"

He continued but in a more agitated tone. "Fine then. The reason your mother had to die was because you were born. If you were never born, she would be alive right now..."

Kim Taejune froze as he heard his father's words, Kim Taejune clenched his fists in anger. "How is being born my fault?!"

Kim Hyunseok didn't answer. He simply turned his back on his son and walked toward the limousine waiting at the gate.

The crowd parted instinctively as Kim Hyunseok walked past, his imposing presence enough to silence any whispers.

Without another glance at his son, he stepped into the limousine, the door closing with a quiet finality.

Kim Taejune watched his father enter the limousine and saw it leave. He muttered to himself while watching, "Fucking bastard..."

Kim Taejune sighed before storming back to the male dorm as the crowd stared at him pitifully.

Stunned in silence by the entire situation, I could only listen to the parents of cadets inside the crowd as they began whispering about Kim Taejune's family.

"Oh... that poor child... I remember seeing the death of the 'Queen of Midnight' on the news 13 years ago... I still can't believe her loving husband killed her..."

"He's Kim Joonho's former younger brother, right? I'm glad to see he is okay.... It was quite a shock when the 'Bringer of Dawn' announced he had disowned him four years ago..."

"Kim Joonho hasn't even contacted his younger brother once? Isn't he having his first child with his wife soon?"

"If I remember correctly, ever since the death of that boy's mother, he locked himself in his mother's personal library..."

Soon the conversations slowly died down and everyone went on with their lives like nothing ever happened like this was a common occurrence.

'Okay then?.. Lets go back to our dorm...Yoon Harin and recuperate and think about everything we have learned and maybe I can figure something out about Kim Taejune...'

I quickly left the entrance of Eden and headed back to my dorm room to recuperate and process everything I heard in order to figure out the story behind Kim Taejune.

As I entered the female dorm's lobby I quickly ran up the stairs to the first floor and headed to my dorm room and opened the door using my keycard and closed it behind me.

I went over to my bed, sat down, and began trying to fit the pieces of what I had heard.

'First off, Kim Taejune's mother, also known as Lee Sooyoung, who was originally the third strongest savior in the entire world, became bedridden after the birth of Kim Taejune, who died during the 'Infernus Incident.'

'When Kim Taejune was born, he had an older brother, Kim Joonho, who is 10 years older than him...'

'Then we have the Infernus Incident, which was a massive tragedy. At 'Guardian's Clinic,' the best hospital for saviors in the world located in the U.S., it was suddenly attacked by a horde of fire-based calamities from two different tower outbreaks at the same time.'

'Oddly enough, out of the 2000 casualties there was only one savior casualty, which was Lee Sooyoung.'

'Apparently, the only people at the scene of her death were Kim Taejune and his father, Kim Hyunseok.'

'No one really knows what happened when they were alone together, but it ended with Kim Hyunseok killing his wife.'

'His older brother, Kim Joonho, has cut off connections with Kim Taejune for an unknown reason, and he blames both his father and his younger brother for the death of Lee Sooyoung."

'Ever since then, Kim Taejune has locked himself in the personal library of his mother.'

'Later, when he was 16, he was publicly disowned by his father on the news.'

'Here's the problem... though those incidents never existed in the original story, those events changed parts of the story completely...'

I sighed, remembering what his father had said, '"The reason your mother had to die was because you were born. If you were never born, she would be alive right now..."'

'He wasn't technically wrong...'

'If Kim Taejune didn't exist and the story played out normally, Lee Sooyoung would be alive right now.'

'My question is... how did he know?'

'Maybe I'm overthinking it... He could be saying that because the moment Kim Taejune was born, his wife was bedridden.'

My mind kept going back to that screen I saw when I tried gaining information about Lee Sooyoung. I hesitantly tried using it to figure out what the Infernus incident was, but instead, I got a new screen that annoyed me the moment I read it.

[You don't have access to this story portion]

'Fucking great, another screen saying 'I don't have access.''

I laid down on my bed while muttering to myself, "Kim Taejune... Seriously, who and what are you?..."

I lazily looked at the ceiling when a sudden thought came to my mind, 'Can I really trust my skill anymore?'

'There have been so many changes to the story so far, and 'story of the world' only tells the original story of 'Calamity Hunter.' Everything else that's changed has its say that 'I don't have access to that information' or some other bullshit.'

'And there's probably more that's changed in the story... In the end, it all ties back to Kim Taejune.'

I soon became lost in my own thoughts as time slowly went by...

A few hours later, I looked at the clock on top of the small drawer between me and Kwon Nara's beds, checking the time.

'It's already 8? I swear it was 4 when I got back... Whatever, I should start prepping for tomorrow... the next event in the story if it hasn't changed...'

'The tournament between the classes Vav and Kaph, aka the introduction of the main cast of cadets who help Arthur.'

'I'm probably gonna be in a Vav class... Maybe even the same class as Arthur if I'm lucky...'

'Wait... Fuck... that means I'm most likely gonna fight members of the main cast and get my ass beat...'

I disliked that thought for some reason, 'Enough procrastination... Let's get a bit stronger at least...'

'I'd rather not embarrass myself and lose instantly... Especially now that I have that small 'rumor' about me beating up a senior.'

'I want at least one win...'

I quickly got out of bed and headed down to the lobby, turning left to a door leading to the indoor gym. I quickly entered and saw a few cadets training inside.

I looked around for a few seconds and noticed a holographic sign near the entrance of the gym that read, 'Need help training?' I quickly went over, and the holographic sign's text changed to 'Please state what you need help with.'

I hesitated for a moment, still new to the technology of this world. "I want to train my endurance and strength."

The sign had a loading screen the moment I finished what I was saying. Workouts and other things that could help me increase my strength and endurance appeared on the screen.

I quickly read through them and sighed to myself before reading the one that seemed to be the best option, but the only problem was that it took 4 hours to complete the workout.

'For the sake of not dying, I have to endure this...'

I forced myself mentally to not quit out and do a simple one and began the workout session that left me so exhausted that I blacked out on my bed the moment I reentered my dorm room.
