Grandma Pei was woken up by the delicious smell of freshly baked brownies wafting through the gap in the door. She usually left her bedroom door slightly ajar at night to stay alert to any activity in the house. And events such as this, always prove that her decision was right.
Reaching for her eyeglasses, Grandma Pei glanced at the digital clock on her bedside table.
It was five in the morning. Who could be baking at this early hour?
In this inconspicuous part of the Lin mansion, there were only her, Maid Yan, the driver, and the Young Master. Could it be Maid Yan baking? But for what purpose?
The task of baking and cooking usually falls on her.
Grandma Pei got out of bed to investigate.
Upon entering the kitchen, she found her Young Master taking out freshly baked brownies from the oven.
Grandma Pei was astonished. "Young Master? Why are you baking so early in the morning?"
Fei Chuan set down the tray and removed the gloves from his hands. "I didn’t want to disturb your sleep," he explained, glancing at the wall clock. "It’s still early. You should go back to bed."
Glancing around the kitchen, Grandma Pei noticed several failed bread attempts on the table. She was speechless. How early had the Young Master risen to make all of these failed products?
"I’ll help you clean up," Grandma Pei offered, starting to pick up the trash but Fei Chuan stopped her.
"Don’t worry about it, Grandma. I’ll take care of it," Fei Chuan insisted. He had made quite a mess in the kitchen, so he should take care of it. Furthermore, he had risen early to avoid disturbing his grandmother.
"I won’t be able to go back to sleep once I’m awake. Besides, you’ll be late if you clean this up by yourself. Anyway, what were you trying to make with these breads?" Grandma Pei inquired, gesturing to the failed products.
Fei Chuan lowered his head, embarrassed. "...Croissants."
The croissants Bei Sangyun had brought that day were so delicious. He wanted to repay her by baking some himself, hoping she would also enjoy the wonderful experience he had that time.
But the only thing he knew how to bake was cookies. He assumed baking other pastries would be similarly easy. He was mistaken.
He watched instructional videos, but it seemed he couldn’t get it right. After three attempts, Fei Chuan ran out of time and baked brownies instead. Fortunately, he succeeded.
But they did not look appetizing.
"Croissants are much more troublesome to bake. They require more time, shaping, and meticulous attention to detail. You should have woken me up; I could have taught you."
"Then, I’ll trouble you, Grandma, to teach me in the future."
Grandma Pei happily agreed. Then she teasingly asked, "You seem interested in baking lately. Do you have someone to give it to?"
Fei Chuan put all the dishes in the sink, his back to Grandma Pei. "....I’m not giving it to anyone. I just want to improve my baking skills." His ears heated up. He was embarrassed to admit that he was baking for someone else, so he lied.
Grandma Pei responded with an ’Oh’, her tone doubtful and teasing. Fortunately, Grandma Pei didn’t press further.
The two cleaned up the kitchen. Fei Chuan went upstairs to take a bath while Grandma Pei prepared his breakfast.
As Fei Chuan was about to leave, Grandma Pei handed him the container with his baked brownies.
"Here. Don’t forget these. Good luck, Young Master," Grandma Pei said, winking at him.
Fei Chuan: "...."
He grabbed the container, his face red, and quickly got into the car.
Grandma Pei surely had an inkling already. It was useless to lie to her.
.....
The cold gradually lessened, and the greenery on the sidewalk became more vibrant. Many students wore their spring uniforms and chatted with friends as they walked, full of energy and liveliness.
On the side road, under the shade of a tree, a car was parked.
Driver Chen glanced at Bei Sangyun in the rear view mirror and couldn’t help but speak out, "Young Miss, why don’t you wait inside the school gate instead? If the bell rings and you’re still outside, the school might mark you as late."
Bei Sangyun watched the sidewalk like a hawk, looking for a familiar face. "No one would dare mark me late. Don’t worry about it."
Driver Chen: "...."
But if they continued doing this, someone might notice and give them a ticket. Things would get troublesome then.
He glanced at the paper bag beside Bei Sangyun. They had left the mansion early in the morning to pick this up from a bakery that was a city away from the capital. He thought the Young Miss was craving it, which was why she traveled early and far. But she hadn’t even taken it out yet.
Five more minutes passed, and the students on the sidewalk dwindled. The cars driving towards the school gate became fewer and fewer.
Then the bell rang. Many students ran towards the school gate, leaving the street empty.
Driver Chen glanced back and forth between Bei Sangyun and the direction of the school, wearing a baffled expression. His face was silently questioning why she hadn’t gotten out of the car yet.
While Driver Chen was confused over Bei Sangyun’s series of strange actions, Bei Sangyun suddenly sat up straight. She leaned closer to the window, her gaze landing on a tall man who had his head lowered.
Behind the man, a group of girls gathered along the way, admiring his every step.
Bei Sangyun’s eyes lit up.
She opened the car door and ran toward the person. She only stopped when she was only a few meters apart from him. A small smile unconsciously bloomed on her face as she approached the man sneakily.
"You might bump into someone if you keep looking down like that."
Fei Chuan raised his head and saw the person who had been on his mind the whole morning. He blinked. Bei Sangyun was late too?
As he wondered why she was late, a paper bag was suddenly placed in his hand. "This is from a different bakery. I heard their cinnamon rolls are the best. Fortunately, I happened to pass by earlier."
Fei Chuan noticed the brand on the paper bag and recognized the shop. Wasn’t this the shop that was a city away from the capital?
He happened to see this shop’s recommendation when he was searching for the best shops that sell cookies when he was craving before.
Was this the reason why she was late?
Fei Chuan blinked. The cinnamon rolls were still warm. The warmth from his hand seemed to travel to his chest, making him feel giddy and indescribable.
"It’s best to eat them while they’re still warm," Bei Sangyun added, seeing that he wasn’t making any movement.
Fei Chuan unwrapped the cinnamon roll and took a bite. Cinnamon rolls were best eaten warm. The icing started to melt in his mouth. The spiraled layers of dough balanced the sweet cinnamon filling.
Fei Chuan savored it as his taste buds were satisfied by the bread. Warm cinnamon rolls are indeed comforting and irresistible.
"How is it?" Bei Sangyun asked with a smile. She seemed to be enjoying watching him eat.
Fei Chuan liked the cinnamon roll. It gave him a wonderful experience like the croissant did. Perhaps not only because it was baked good, but because it was bought especially for him.
"...It’s good."
Bei Sangyun’s eyes turned to crescents. "Glad you like it."
Fei Chuan wanted to give the brownies he had baked. But thinking about their ugly appearance, he hesitated. He put the rest of the cinnamon roll to Bei Sangyun’s lips. "Why don’t you take a bite and see for yourself."
Bei Sangyun was surprised. She blinked. But despite her brief surprise, she immediately took action and took a bite of the cinnamon roll from Fei Chuan’s hand.
Fei Chuan rarely fed her of his own initiative. Of course, she wouldn’t reject it.
The melted icing, the wonderful combination of the yeasty dough, and the sweet caramel filling burst in her mouth. Bei Sangyun’s expression lit up.
"This is so good!"
Bei Sangyun nodded in satisfaction. But she did not finish the rest of the bread. Instead, she took the bread and mimicked Fei Chuan’s action of putting it to his lips.
"This is something I bought for you. So you should finish the rest," Bei Sangyun said, wishing she had bought more to give all kinds of good things, including good food, to Fei Chuan.
Since this was good, she wanted to give this to him.
Fei Chuan saw the sincerity and genuine happiness in her eyes and felt scorched by that gaze. His heartbeat increased and his face heated.
Was Bei Sangyun trying to get to him through his stomach?
...It was definitely working.
