Chapter 106: The god Games Announcement

The "Odyssey" landed smoothly in its private hangar atop the god Spire, the soft hiss of its ramp lowering a welcome, familiar sound.

News of their victory over the Schism Monolith had already spread like wildfire through the Sector CommNet. They were greeted not with a wild party this time, but with a deep, collective sigh of relief from the entire population.

Their Sector Lord had faced down another cosmic horror and had, once again, come out on top. The people of Sector Gamma were starting to get used to their leader performing impossible feats. It was becoming the new normal.

The Solar Mandate and the Technocratic Imperium, the two big, powerful empires on their borders, had also been watching. Their long-range sensors had picked up the terrifying energy spike of the Monolith activating, and then the even more powerful, and completely baffling, wave of pure creative energy that had shattered it.

They didn’t understand what had happened, but they understood the result. Ryan Stone had single-handedly neutralized a sector-level threat without starting a war.

Formal messages of congratulation arrived from both empires. They were stiff, official, and carefully worded, but the underlying message was clear: We see you, Sector Lord Stone. We don’t know how you do what you do, but we are impressed.

And a little bit scared. Ryan’s reputation had grown. He was no longer just a surprising newcomer; he was a real, legitimate power on the galactic stage.

Life in Sector Gamma settled into a period of productive calm. The new alliance with Sanctuary was a massive success. Shipments of advanced healing serums and nutrient-rich food began to arrive, making the lives of everyone in the Bastion Alliance better.

In return, Zara’s Precursor Studies Institute sent back shipments of refined power cells and schematics for basic defensive technologies. It was a perfect partnership.

Ryan was in his office, reviewing trade reports and planning new infrastructure projects. For the first time, he felt like a true governor.

He was dealing with economics and logistics, not just monsters and cultists. It was a nice change of pace. He was just starting to think that he might actually get to enjoy a few weeks of peace.

And that’s when the entire universe decided to interrupt him.

Without any warning, every single screen, every god Interface, every holographic display in every sector across the entire god went black. A moment of absolute, dead silence fell over the universe.

And then, a new voice spoke. It wasn’t the cold, robotic voice of the local god Wardens. This voice was ancient, impossibly powerful, and resonated not in their ears, but directly in the center of their minds.

It was a voice that held the weight of galaxies. This was the Prime Warden, an entity that governed not just sectors, but entire regions of the god.

<BEINGS OF THE god,>* the voice boomed in their heads, a sound that felt like the ringing of a billion cosmic bells. <A DECADE HAS PASSED. A CYCLE IS COMPLETE. THE TIME OF TESTING IS UPON US. HEAR YE AND PREPARE. THE DECENNIAL god GAMES WILL COMMENCE!>

A wave of information, of rules and images and history, flooded into every person’s mind. The god Games. It was an ancient tradition, a grand tournament held only once every ten years.

It was the ultimate contest of power, skill, and strategy. Sector Lords from across the many regions of the god would be invited to compete, to bring their chosen champions and test their might against each other in a series of grand, spectacular challenges.

The prizes were beyond anything a normal person could imagine. There were caches of legendary, Tier 7 artifacts. There were permanent, fundamental upgrades to a sector’s Weaver, enough to turn a backwater outpost into a galactic superpower overnight. And there were the "god Keys," special artifacts that could unlock pathways to even more advanced, more ancient regions of the god, places closer to the Core that were filled with untold wonders and secrets.

But the grand prize, the ultimate reward, was a single, priceless opportunity: a private audience with a god Regent.

The Regents were the near-mythical beings who governed the entire god. They were spoken of only in whispers. They were said to be second in power only to the Prime Weaver itself.

To be granted an audience with one was to be given a chance to ask a single question, to receive a piece of knowledge, or to be granted a boon of unimaginable power. It was a prize worth risking everything for.

<SECTORS WILL BE CHOSEN. CHAMPIONS WILL BE NAMED. GLORY AWAITS THE VICTORIOUS,>* the Prime Warden’s voice declared. <LET THE GAMES BEGIN!>

The screens all returned to normal. A stunned silence fell over Sector Gamma, followed by a frantic explosion of chatter in the CommNet.

Player_Handy_Dan: The GOD GAMES?! I thought that was just a myth! A story they told new arrivals!

Ace Striker: A chance for our glorious Sector Lord to display his magnificent abilities on a universal stage! He will surely dominate! I must begin composing the victory anthem immediately!

Random Player (Outpost #12): I wonder if there will be snacks.

Ryan sat in his office, the Prime Warden’s announcement still resounding in his mind. He had a feeling he knew what was coming next. Sure enough, a private notification flashed on his god interface.

[Sector Lord Ryan Stone. Your status as a "god Shaper," your high Influence, and your recent victories have met the minimum requirements for entry.

Sector Gamma is hereby formally invited to participate in the Decennial god Games. You may select a team of four champions to compete alongside you. Please register your team within one cycle.]

Ryan leaned back in his chair and let out a long, slow sigh. So much for peace and quiet. The universe, it seemed, had other, much grander, and much more dangerous plans for him.

He had just finished one series of impossible challenges, and now he was being thrown into the biggest one of all. But as he looked at his god Interface, a slow, competitive smile spread across his face.

He had never been one to back down from a challenge. And the idea of winning a private chat with one of the universe’s bosses? That was a prize worth fighting for.
