Chapter 31 - Kaelen Stryn Vs Liora Veylan

A wiry boy stepped onto the arena stage, short brown hair slightly ruffled, green eyes sharp. He spun a pair of rune-inscribed nunchaku with casual ease, the chains clinking softly.

Opposite him, a girl approached with steady steps. Her long black hair was tied in a high ponytail, and her lean, muscular build spoke of strength. Reinforced gloves covered her fists—proof of her Gauntlet Technique.

The former was Kaelen Stryn. The latter, Liora Veylan.

Their match was next—right after the clash between Ryker and Vaelion Crest.

The crowd held its breath as the two faced off, ready to make their mark in the quarterfinals.

The two stood across from each other in the arena, the crowd buzzing with excitement.

Liora gave a confident smirk, tightening the straps on her gauntlets.

"Go easy on me, will you?" she said playfully, her tone light but her eyes sharp.

Kaelen gave a small shrug, twirling his nunchaku lazily.

"Likewise. I'd rather not leave with a broken jaw," he replied, meeting her gaze with a cool grin.

Once the signal was given there was no hesitation. Both moved at once.

Kaelen's nunchaku spun with terrifying speed, the wind around them howling as he swung with sharp, precise control. His movements were fluid, fast, and full of power. On the other side, Liora's gauntlets glinted under the sun, her footwork sharp and her eyes locked in.

She blocked his first attack cleanly, sparks flying as nunchaku met steel-plated fists.

Kaelen didn't slow down, weaving strikes in quick succession, attacking from awkward angles, but Liora kept up, dodging and deflecting with uncanny precision. Her counters came swift, aiming to trap his momentum and close the distance further.

Still, Kaelen never panicked. Even while retreating slightly, his strikes maintained rhythm, dancing between offense and defense. It was hard to switch to defense from offense when using nunchakum but with his level of expertise, Kaelen was able to do it quite easily.

It was a hard-fought match. Unlike most of the earlier fights, neither side could find a true opening. But gradually, Kaelen's speed started to show its edge—he used it to maintain just enough distance, keeping her from locking him down entirely.

In the final exchange, Liora tried to bait an overextension, but Kaelen saw through it. With a sudden pivot and a feint, he struck low, then high—forcing her to block—and then spun the nunchaku with brutal momentum against her side.

A clean hit.

Though she remained standing, the blow decided the match.

"Victory: Kaelen Stryn!"

Liora gave a small smirk of respect, nodding at him before walking off the stage. She fought well, but Kaelen had simply been sharper today. While she wanted to go higher, she had tried her best—this was the furthest she could go. And she had no regrets.

The match ended fair and square.

The next match after that was Selene Evernight vs Ilya Moreau. The two had some interesting techniques and used similar weapons. While Selene wielded a pair of daggers, Ilya fought with twin short swords—which was almost the same thing, right?

And interestingly, this was the first girl vs girl match-up since the start of the tournament. That was surprising, considering how many girls there were at the beginning. So everybody—body and soul—was focused on this match. Especially the horny teenage classmates, who, being familiar with both girls, were even more curious to see how they'd fare against each other.

The match was an interesting one, and unfortunately for Ilya Moreau, she was up against Selene. For some reason—obviously to prove her strength to both Gareth and his son Ethan—Selene fought with a will that was incredibly hard for Ilya to crack. But Ilya was no pushover. She was determined too.

The match dragged out longer than it should have, breaking the record for the longest fight since the tournament began.

Unknown to Selene, though, the father and son duo cared little about what she was doing right now. Ethan himself didn't have the slightest feeling of love for her.

Unfortunately for Ilya Moreau, her stamina couldn't keep up. As the match wore on, she started making mistake after mistake, and Selene took full advantage cleanly winning the match.

Ilya gritted her teeth after the loss but didn't feel too much pain from it. Just like Liora, she also felt satisfied even after failing.

Anyone who could make it this far had already made their mark. Even if they didn't gain anything from the tournament itself — even if they hadn't showcased their Awakened talents — regardless of their talent grade, they had already secured spots in top Guilds and mercenary groups. Even Gareth Drakethorne himself might consider adding them to his Guild.

As for why they weren't allowed to use their talents in this tournament, the smarter students had long figured it out. Some talents could be extremely dangerous—dangerous enough to instantly kill an opponent. Without perfect control over their respective talents, fighting each other would be far too risky for every student involved.

Even Ethan himself wouldn't be capable of defending against the talents of the others—not because he was weak, but because his two talents were strange. They weren't straightforward like most Awakened abilities. But the power within his talents... it was far greater than anything any other Awakened in this world could achieve!

The next match was the climax and end of the quarter finals, after Ilya Moreau and Selene Evernight this match was the most anticipated.

The next match was the climax and end of the quarter-finals. After Ilya Moreau and Selene Evernight's match, this was the most anticipated.

It was the matchup between Ethan Drakethorne and David Fangblade... A clash between two prominent families!

The Drakethorne family and the Fangblade family!

The Fangblade family, like the Drakethornes, has a Guild to their name—specializing in clearing dungeons and selling all sorts of materials needed for or obtained from them.

They've cleared multiple dungeons, but it's just a little more than half the number the Drakethorne family has cleared. And, unlike the Drakethornes, they don't have a single Labyrinth to their name. That alone shows just how rare Labyrinths are—and how hard they are to conquer.

To top it off, they're like everyone else in this Labyrinth—living on rental space within the Aurelian Depths, just like many others here...

The first reason why living in a Labyrinth is better than Nexa is simple—safety. This world, Nexa constantly faces the threat of dungeon outbreaks and even world invasions. Its threat level is extremely high. A conquered Labyrinth, though, can defend against all of that.

Now, while it's clear the fame and accomplishments of the Fangblade family can't compare to those of the Drakethornes, people were still eager to see how the young masters of these two great families would fare against each other...
