Chapter 638: Chapter 618: Do you miss your husband?

The night breeze blew, and she couldn’t help but sneeze, forcing herself to perk up. The weather had recently changed, getting colder, especially at night. The wind against her skin felt almost like a blade slicing through her.

"Jiayi," Xia Tingxuan had cooked a late-night snack with Auntie Li, and was now bringing in some sweet soup for her daughter. Seeing that the room was empty, she walked to the balcony door and called out.

Jiayi was lost in thought and almost let her phone slip from her grasp at her mother’s call. Regaining her composure, she walked into the room.

Xia Tingxuan noticed her daughter’s distraction and glanced at the phone in her hand. "Is it Yixiao looking for you?"

Jiayi reacted as if someone had touched a delicate subject she’d rather keep hidden, "Yeah, I had the Huo Family’s secretary send him an invitation. He just replied with a message saying he received it."

Xia Tingxuan put down the sweet soup and pulled her daughter aside to sit down, lowering her voice, "Do you still have... feelings for Yixiao?"

The romance between her daughter and Yixiao wasn’t a matter of just a year or two; they were childhood sweethearts who had grown up together. Their separation was a reluctant mistake, not because Nie Yixiao had truly been unfaithful.

She understood Jiayi’s feelings very well.

Jiayi felt as if her heart had been struck by something heavy. Pulling herself together, she shook her head, "I’m over him."

Just then, Auntie Li called Xia Tingxuan to come and have some sweet soup in the living room.

Xia Tingxuan didn’t say much more, speaking softly, "Don’t think too much, get some sleep early. These few days, with the wedding photoshoot and the ceremony, there’s a lot to do."

Jiayi nodded, watching her mother close the door and leave. She didn’t feel like eating the late-night snack, changed into her pajamas, finished her washing up, turned off the light, and went to bed.

The night grew darker, and all was silent.

She didn’t know what time it was. Half asleep and half awake, there seemed to be some rustling sounds.

Jiayi thought it was her mother coming in to put away the sweet soup dishes, lazily turned over, and murmured with her eyes closed, "Mommy, the bowl is on the coffee table."

There was no reply.

Suddenly, her mind snapped to attention. The footsteps were a bit heavy, not like her mother’s...

She abruptly opened her eyes, only to see a tall figure standing at her bedroom door, his back to her, apparently locking the door.

In the dim light, it was definitely not her mother!

It was a man.

Had a thief entered the house? That seemed unlikely!

This was a high-end community with excellent security. How could such brazenness be possible?

Jiayi’s forehead broke out in a cold sweat. She didn’t dare make a sound, fearing an outburst could provoke the thief and lead to her own untimely demise.

She controlled her nerves and her hand slid over to touch the small alarm clock on her bedside table.

The alarm clock was made of metal; if this intruder dared do anything, a good whack on his head would give him what for!

She squinted her eyes as the figure moved closer, the cold sweat soaking through her thin pajamas.

The "thief" had locked the door and turned around, walked around the room without taking anything, and then headed straight for the bed.

Jiayi sweated even more profusely. What on earth did this thief want to do? Wasn’t stealing things enough?

As the shadow approached and bent down over her, without hesitation, she sat up abruptly, swinging the alarm clock toward the intruder’s head, and then began to yell, "Mom—"

The man quickly covered her mouth with one hand, and with a slight turn of his face, he avoided her attack, took the clock from her grasp with his other hand, and placed it lightly on the side table.

"Don’t shout," the man whispered hot air into her ear.

Although it was only two words, Jiayi recognized them—it was him!

For a moment, her fear subsided, and she felt both angry and amused.

"Huo Zhenyang, how did you get in!" she reprimanded softly.

He still nestled by the delicate curve of her ear, playing with her soft, fragrant hair: "The house in Green Island Garden was bought for you and your mom by me, do you think it’s hard for me to get a spare key? Haven’t seen each other for so many days, did you miss your husband?"

"Is this your excuse for playing the thief?" She was fuming, like a little bullfrog.

Coming over in the dead of night, doesn’t he understand that this is terrifying, enough to scare someone to death?

At this moment, Xia Tingxuan and Auntie Li, having heard Jiayi’s cry, had already put on their clothes and come over.

The two were about to push the door open but found that the daughter’s room was locked.

Xia Tingxuan immediately got anxious and knocked on the door: "Jiayi, what’s wrong?"

Even in the pitch-black darkness where she couldn’t see her hand in front of her face, she could feel his eyes emitting a strong deterrence.

She didn’t want her mommy to come in and see this scene either; what a total embarrassment that would be. She raised her voice: "It’s nothing. Just had a nightmare."

"Are you really okay? Why is your door locked?" Xia Tingxuan grew suspicious, her daughter never locked her door when she slept.

Jiayi’s heart raced, and she dared not breathe too loudly: "Oh, I just went out to get some water earlier; I locked it when I came back in. Mommy, you go to sleep first; I’m going to bed too. I’m planning to visit the bridal shop early tomorrow morning." She even yawned to prove she was really tired.

Huo Zhenyang was very pleased at her reaction, his hand that had been around her waist slid down to her round bottom, as he leaned in and whispered by her ear, "Little Kitten is really smart."

She almost let out a high-pitched scream with the words ’catch the hooligan’ but gave the man a vicious glare and was forced to keep her mouth tightly shut.

Xia Tingxuan heard some rustling and couldn’t help asking again: "Jiayi, are you sure you’re okay?"

He took advantage of her inability to fight back and pulled her into his embrace, taking all the liberties he could.

All she could do was to endure; immobilized in his arms, she had to muster her spirit and said pitifully: "I’m really okay, mommy, you should go to bed soon."

Xia Tingxuan didn’t say anything more: "Then you should rest early too." Saying so, she and Auntie Li went back to their rooms.

Once the footsteps at the door had disappeared, Jiayi pushed him hard and said, "You should leave now, mommy and Auntie Li have gone back to their rooms."

As she spoke, she grabbed his hand and headed towards the door—

But after two steps, she couldn’t pull him along no matter what.

Turning her head, she saw the man sitting nonchalantly on the bed, not moving an inch.

"Aren’t you preparing to leave?" she gritted her teeth.

He pulled her back, forcing her to sit on his lap, his voice low and husky: "Does it feel like first love?"

She was trying to struggle off his lap, but upon hearing his sudden question, she was stunned for a moment: "What the heck?"

In the dimness, his gaze was clear, but flickered with sparks, like the aurora that could slice through the night, he looked at her intently, his voice deep and resonant, as if rising from the depths of an ancient pool: "Just now, hiding in my arms from your mom, doesn’t it remind you?"

Not just the time he’d been with her but also his past without her, he wanted to claim it all.

He didn’t want to miss a single moment of her time.

The only thing he lost to Nie Yixiao was that he met her too late.

The strongest man can’t compete with time, yet he refused to accept defeat.

The feelings Nie Yixiao could give her, he could give too.

She was dumbfounded for a moment before realization dawned on her, her tone laced with a hint of sarcasm: "So, Mr. Huo snuck over in the middle of the night just to experience the thrill of a first love?" 𝘧𝑟𝑒𝑒𝘸𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝓁.𝘤𝘰𝓂

"Are you laughing at me?" He lifted her chin gently but firmly with his hand, bringing her face a few centimeters closer to his own.
