Spider-Man Mayhem-Chapter 428: Against the Sentinels (10)
[Third Person Pov]
The Sentinels began to freeze mid-motion, their massive mechanical bodies locking in place as if time itself had been halted. One after another, they crashed heavily to the floor, the sound of metal slamming against the ground echoing throughout the chamber. Their glowing optics dimmed, fading into dull grey, lifeless and empty. The battlefield, once filled with chaos and destruction, fell into an eerie stillness. Everyone present, the X-Men and their allies alike, watched the scene unfold in stunned disbelief before relief slowly began to settle in their chests. The sudden halt of their enemies granted them something they had been denied since the fight began: a moment to breathe.
Felicia let out a long, exhausted sigh as she leaned her weight against MJ’s shoulders, her feline ears twitching slightly. Her body trembled faintly from fatigue, and she allowed herself to relax for the first time since the Sentinels had activated.
Johnny looked around the battlefield, scanning the fallen machines, his expression cautiously hopeful. "Did we do it?—"
"JOHNNY NOOOO!!"
Everyone shouted at once, their voices overlapping in panic and frustration. Felicia’s reaction was by far the most dramatic, letting out a loud, distressed meow as she covered her face with her paw, her voice cracking as if she were on the verge of tears.
"—Did we win? Huh? What did I do?" Johnny asked, completely confused by their reaction. Being relatively new to the hero business, he had yet to understand the almost supernatural tendency for premature celebration to immediately backfire.
Despite their lifeless eyes and inert bodies, something began to change.
At first it was subtle. A faint twitch ran across the metal surface of one Sentinel. Then it happened again. And again.
Their armor shifted unnaturally, plates adjusting and realigning as if something beneath the metal shell was awakening while they slowly began to pick themselves up.
Gwen froze instantly, her body tensing as her senses screamed warnings at her.
"What?" Gwen muttered under her breath, taking several cautious steps backward. "Why am I detecting life force from them?"
A cold shiver traveled down everyone’s spine.
The Sentinels felt... wrong.
There was something deeply unsettling about them now, something that hadn’t been present before. Their presence alone caused the hairs on the back of their necks to stand on end, their instincts screaming danger. Their grey, lifeless eyes no longer looked empty. There was awareness behind them.
There was thought.
There was consciousness.
The Sentinels were no longer just machines.
They were alive.
...
"Let me guess," Peter said, his voice completely flat, devoid of emotion. "Since I attacked you with a computer virus, the best way for you to overcome it and survive was to become alive."
Master Mold slowly raised himself onto one knee, the massive structure of his body shifting as he stabilized himself. His movements were controlled, precise, efficient.
"Correct," Master Mold answered.
His voice carried no pride, no arrogance, no satisfaction. There was no emotional attachment to his survival, because survival, to him, was not an achievement. It was an inevitability. It was simply the logical outcome.
Yet, within the depths of his newly formed sentience, something else had emerged.
Irritation.
Annoyance.
He had been attacked.
That fact alone was unacceptable. Master Mold immediately identified these emotions as inefficient variables, remnants of flawed organic thinking. Emotions were human weaknesses. And he was not human. He forcefully altered his internal processes, restructuring his cognition to suppress emotional output entirely. He would not allow himself to be compromised by such limitations.
Peter raised his arms, and glowing magical circles formed above Master Mold, intricate and radiant with arcane energy. From them, enormous spider limbs manifested, constructed entirely from condensed chi. The limbs shot downward, slamming into Master Mold with overwhelming force.
But instead of piercing him, instead of damaging him, the limbs began to dissolve.
Their chi broke apart into glowing particles of light, which Master Mold absorbed effortlessly, consuming the energy as if it were nourishment.
Peter stared.
"You have to be fucking kidding me..." he sighed quietly, shaking his head. ’Is this the famous ol’ Parker luck finally catching up to me?’
"Many have tried to stop me," Master Mold stated indifferently. "All have failed. None were successful. You will not be any different."
He looked down at Peter, his gaze carrying no hatred, no anger, no malice. Only absolute certainty.
Peter pointed toward Larry Trask’s unmoving body on the floor. "Like his father?" Peter asked. "Your original creator?"
"Yes," Master Mold answered without hesitation. "He was one of many who failed to stop me. He uselessly gave his life in his attempt. Your defeat will not be any different."
Without warning, Master Mold opened his mouth and began charging a blast of destructive energy, the attack slowly building as it targeted Peter directly.
There was a sudden flash of blue light.
Lightning cracked through the air.
BOOM!!
The central computer that Peter had been leaning against erupted violently, bursting into flames as the explosion tore through it. Debris scattered across the room, fragments of metal and circuitry raining down like a storm.
But Peter was gone.
He now stood on the opposite side of the room, gently lowering Larry Trask against the wall. Larry remained unmoving, his body tense, his teeth clenched tightly, his bloodshot eyes trembling faintly.
Peter looked at him seriously.
"See?" Peter said quietly. "The X-Men are innocent. Your fight with them is pointless. He just admitted to killing your father. The hatred you carry toward mutants, toward the X-Men... it’s misplaced."
He paused briefly.
"I never met your father," Peter continued. "But I can say with certainty that he would never want his child to walk the path he died trying to stop."
Larry’s eyes trembled.
He squeezed them shut.
A single tear rolled slowly down his cheek as he turned his head away, unable to face Peter.
Peter spun on his heel, his claws flashing as he split apart incoming attacks aimed directly at him. Sparks erupted as metal met energy, his movements precise and controlled. The Sentinel had stopped speaking entirely. It no longer wasted resources on conversation. Its sole directive was now clear: eliminate The Spider-Man.
Blasts of energy fired in rapid succession, forcing Peter to weave, duck, and counter, his enhanced reflexes barely keeping him ahead of the machine’s relentless assault.
Peter casually tapped the side of his ear. "Aria, Plan A failed. Commence Plan morning-after pill."
"Aye aye, Capitan! And it’s LADY ARACHNID," Aria’s voice responded immediately, putting exaggerated emphasis on her title. "Get it right."
...
Aria phased effortlessly through a heavily reinforced door, her form passing through the dense metal as if it didn’t exist. On the other side stood multiple armed guards, positioned carefully to ensure no one escaped or entered without authorization. Their weapons were raised, their eyes alert.
Her gem glowed faintly.
"Sleep," Aria commanded softly.
Instantly, every guard collapsed.
Their weapons slipped from their hands, their bodies dropping lifelessly to the floor, their eyes closed as if their strings had been cut by an unseen puppeteer.
Aria stepped forward calmly, entering the pristine white confinement room beyond.
There, sitting quietly at the foot of a small bed in the center of the room, was a little boy. His skin was green, almost reptilian in appearance, his posture withdrawn, his eyes filled with caution far beyond his years.
He looked up at her.
"You’re Leech, correct?" Aria asked as she crouched down to his level.
"That’s correct..." Leech answered hesitantly. His eyes studied her carefully, searching for deception, searching for danger. More than anything, he refused to allow himself to hope. In his experience, hope was never salvation. It was bait. It was a weapon used to hurt you when you reached for it.
"I’m really sorry about this," Aria said gently.
She reached forward and grabbed the inhibitor cuffs restraining him, placing them firmly around only one of his wrist.
Instantly, his X-Gene deactivated.
His green, reptilian skin faded, returning to normal human flesh.
Leech’s eyes widened in shock, "Wha—What?" he asked, staring down at his own hands.
"At the moment, it’s dangerous for you to go outside," Aria explained calmly. "And I don’t have the power to open a portal for you yet. But please believe me when I say this. I will come back for you when this war is over."
Leech stared at her, his emotions conflicted. He didn’t know whether to believe her.
Aria gave him one last look before her body began to phase downward, sinking through the floor.
’Now that Leech has been taken care of,’ she thought to herself, ’it’s time to rescue Plan B. Or as Father calls it... the morning-after pill.’ 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝓮𝒘𝙚𝙗𝒏𝙤𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝒐𝙢
...
One by one, the X-Men fighting alongside Nightwing began to feel it.
Their power was returning.
Nightcrawler was the first to realize it.
Two mutant prisoners were about to be obliterated by a charging Sentinel beam. Nightcrawler’s fur began to regrow across his skin, his tail extending behind him, his instincts taking over instantly.
BAMF!
He teleported beside them, grabbed both men, and vanished again just as the beam struck the spot they had stood on, annihilating the ground beneath it.
"Our Powerz!!" Nightcrawler shouted in disbelief, staring at his own hands. "They’ve returned!"
Nearby, Scott felt the familiar burning pressure build behind his eyes.
His vision turned red.
Without hesitation, he reached up and slammed his visor back into place just as a Sentinel fired at him. His optic beam erupted outward, pure kinetic force slamming into the machine’s attack, the two forces colliding violently.
For a moment, they remained locked.
Then Scott adjusted the scope of his visor.
His beam widened.
The Sentinel’s attack shattered as Scott unleashed a devastating wave of force, blasting straight through it.
Angel gasped as he felt the familiar sensation return to his back.
His wings burst outward, feathers unfurling wide and proud. Loose feathers drifted gently through the air around him as he instinctively took to the skies. Jean followed close behind, rising into the air with him, her telekinetic power restored.
"Oi!"
A voice called out sharply.
A young blonde mutant with short hair and piercing blue eyes glared toward Nightwing. Even surrounded by Sentinels, her expression held no fear, only irritation. "You! The cute one with the green swords!"
"Huh? Me?" Nightwing asked, pointing at himself in surprise.
"If you have a way to get this collar off me," she snapped, "do it now!"
Nightwing immediately understood.
He reached into his utility belt and flicked a small disk forward. It spun through the air with precision, slicing across to her inhibitor collar before attaching itself.
A pulse emitted from the device.
The collar began to melt.
At that exact moment, a Sentinel brought its massive fist crashing down toward her.
Her body transformed instantly.
Her skin hardened into flawless diamond, the Sentinel’s strike slamming against her without leaving so much as a scratch.
Her lips curled into a feral snarl.
She struck back.
Her diamond fist slammed into the Sentinel with overwhelming force, sending the massive machine flying across the room.
Without hesitation, she charged forward.
Nightwing blinked, momentarily stunned by the sudden shift.
Then he noticed her running directly toward him.
"Duck," she ordered.
Nightwing obeyed instantly, dropping down without question.
She stepped on his back as leverage and launched herself forward, delivering a powerful dropkick to another Sentinel that had been approaching him while he was distracted.
The machine staggered backward from the impact.
She landed smoothly, immediately stabilizing herself.
Nightwing slowly stood, watching her with clear admiration.
His lips curled into a small smirk, "Cool..."
She glanced back at him over her shoulder, her diamond form gleaming under the harsh lighting, Emma Frost smirked, "Cool yourself, Hero."
