Special Forces Medic-Chapter 818 - 691: The Purpose of Coming Here
Shuang Shuang hadn't returned. Wang Xi stared blankly at the empty bed. The bed frame creaked as he climbed onto it and lay quietly. Boss had come, yet he was asked to leave. It was expected, but driven by a man's competitive spirit, Wang Xi didn't want to be just a small-time cop. He lay with his hands on his chest, unable to sleep.
Suddenly, a sharp, piercing alarm broke the sky. Still half-awake, people were roused. Wang Xi leaped off the bed, burst through the dormitory door first. "Boss!" The shout burst from his lips, leaving the dorm mates staring blankly at him. Oblivious, Wang Xi was already running to the open ground.
The alarm persisted. His bare feet felt the dusty particles beneath as he realized he was alone outside. Wang Xi glanced around, feeling a strange sense of embarrassment, as if he'd been played. The dormitory hallway was crowded with people watching his odd behavior curiously.
"Wang Xi!" Being called out made him turn around foolishly, discovering Shuang Shuang standing right behind him. His heart skipped a beat.
"Shuang... Boss. Boss!" Wang Xi called out softly.
"What are you doing here?" Shuang Shuang's cold eyes locked onto Wang Xi under the bright lights.
"I... I..." Wang Xi didn't know what to say, struggling to find a suitable excuse. "The alarm sounded, so..."
Shuang Shuang chuckled, raising a hand. Two guards moved to stand beside Wang Xi. "Boss, what does this mean?" Wang Xi's heart raced as he keenly sensed people behind him.
"Who are you calling boss?"
"Of course, it's you!" Shuang Shuang chuckled again, his eagle-like eyes scanning the person in front. "I thought you were calling someone else."
"How could that be? You're my squad leader, so you're my boss." Wang Xi forced a laugh that sounded more like crying.
"Why did you run out in the middle of the night?"
"The alarm, I thought something happened, so I ran out. That's survival instinct."
"It seems we need to give the newcomer a lesson, and the rules here need some proper training."
"What, what do you mean?"
"Please take the newcomer to the classroom." Shuang Shuang politely addressed the people behind Wang Xi, who was then unceremoniously escorted away. "Everyone go back to sleep, nothing exciting to see here." As if it was a routine matter, a dull excitement, the crowd dispersed quickly without regret, leaving the hallway empty. Shuang Shuang glanced into the dark and then walked towards the entrance of the building.
Lying on the bed, unable to sleep, Wang Xi now sat on a bench with his head down. Sleepiness quickly overtook him. After being brought into the room, the guards paid him no mind, leaving him to sit alone.
"Officer Wang, why leave a good police job to come work at our brick kiln?" Shuang Shuang walked in naturally as the previous two guards exited.
Having his identity exposed, Wang Xi strangely felt less tense. He nodded cooperatively. "Just a bit bored lately."
"Besides you, is there anyone else here?"
"You saw, I'm the only one who showed up for the job, how could there be others?"
"I see. So, what brings you here?"
"Boss Shuang, you don't seem like a mere squad leader. How about a trade—questions for answers? That way, neither of us loses out." Wang Xi grinned slyly at Shuang Shuang.
"I think you still don't get one thing." Shuang Shuang raised an eyebrow at Wang Xi, his thin face suddenly appearing more menacing, like a skull.
"No, no! I fully understand my situation now. But since I'm going to die anyway, dying without regrets isn't too much to ask, right?"
Shuang Shuang stared at Wang Xi, trying to discern his motives. "Don't look at me like that. It's kind of embarrassing."
"You're messing with me!"
"Boss Shuang, I wouldn't dare. You don't seem to be just a squad leader. Can I ask, how did you know my identity?" Wang Xi found him dull, thinking that provoking him any further might result in getting punched. That wouldn't be worth it, given their position above the courtyard, two stories high. Jumping might break a leg, Wang Xi thought, wanting to stand to assess the situation, but Shuang Shuang stopped him. "This high, I wouldn't jump to escape. Just want to open a window for fresh air, it's good for thinking."
"Officer Wang, you really don't understand your situation." Shuang Shuang warned for the second time. "I don't want to resort to force. Please call the other person out. It'll save everyone some trouble."
"I've told you, I'm alone. Where would I find another person for you? Isn't this making it hard for me? Besides, you haven't told me how you knew my identity?"
"You don't need to know that. If you cooperate, don't blame me for being impolite." Shuang Shuang clapped his hands, and the previous guards charged in, lunging towards Wang Xi from front and back.
Ah, it looks like we have to resort to violence after all! With his left arm blocking and his right fist striking, the guard was naturally not a match for someone with professional training. Due to his physical surprise and advantage in strength, the guard didn't immediately fall into a disadvantage. In the cramped space, the three of them exchanged blows, while another person stood by without rushing in.
Wang Xi managed to move his body towards the window. As one of the hulks advanced, he jumped onto the table and kicked at the man, then turned and leaped onto the window ledge.
"Don't let him get away!" Shuang Shuang shouted, and a long whip lashed out, its flexible tip wrapping around Wang Xi's ankle as he jumped out.
Pain! Wang Xi shouted, his head dipped down, crashing into the wall, and a wave of dizziness made him lose consciousness on the spot.
The long whip slowly pulled him up, and the two guards quickly hauled Wang Xi back in through the window.
"What should we do with this guy?"
"Take him down for now, and wait for the fish to bite." Shuang Shuang looked at the unconscious man, a graceful arc appeared at the corner of his mouth, his cold-blooded expression not looking so beautiful on that face, but rather more sinister and terrifying.
The sun rises and sets, with each day following the laws of nature, last night's commotion didn't change the following day's life. Everyone went about their own business, indifferent to the sudden disappearance of one person. Nobody would worry about a newcomer who had been around for less than twenty-four hours. Who he was didn't matter; whether he was taken away or acted foolishly didn't matter either.
Shuang Shuang continued to squat aside, eyes on the workers inside, urging those who wanted to slack off. Today, there was a batch set to ship out of province. The large quantity left him frowning and smoking worriedly.
The brickyard couldn't keep up with the shipment's demand. Though this batch was a new order, even if it didn't reach quantity, the other party wouldn't complain. But since they accepted the job, they still needed to work overtime to complete it.
"Shuang, I heard you caught a ghost yesterday?" The packing team leader walked over, cigarette hanging askew, with a teasing expression, as if watching his joke.
"Hmm, very tight-lipped." Wang Xi might seem useless, but he had a really hard mouth.
"Did you sound the alarm last night just to catch such a small fry? Isn't that a bit excessive?"
"There's another ghost hiding in the shadows, and they seem to be a formidable person!"
"People have been keeping an eye on this place month after month, for more than just a day or two. What's there to worry about?" The packing team leader dismissed it. "Get rid of him by tossing him in the furnace, and there won't even be bones left to find."
"Don't kill that ghost, keeping him can help lure the other one out." Shuang Shuang warned, glaring at the person in front of him.
"You always have so many sneaky ideas. Once everything's packed, check it and set off then."
"Who are the people this time, in such a rush for goods? Even bare packing isn't fast enough."
"No idea. Sister Qin ordered it, just make it happen. The people inside will be ready; we just need to pack and load the goods."
"Got it!" Shuang Shuang still frowned as a truck drove in from outside, a few men jumped out, and they seemed unfamiliar.
"Why the personnel change today?" Shuang Shuang showed a hint of alertness as he slowly approached.
"The original person got sick." The hat was pressed so low, their face was hard to discern.
"Oh!" Shuang Shuang nodded, suddenly striking the other person's left waist when they weren't paying attention, a punch not hard enough to do damage but enough to hurt.
"Hey, why are you hitting people!" The driver embarrassingly fell to the ground, looking quite undignified, as the car's crew quickly helped him up.
"Sorry, my bad," Shuang Shuang clapped his hands and walked aside, as the newly packed goods were already being pushed out from the workshop.
The person who wanted to argue more words, couldn't bother to confront Shuang Shuang further and started loading the goods onto the truck. "Go check if this is indeed the case."
"Yes, team leader."
"You really are cautious, no wonder the boss values you." The packing team leader spoke in a sour tone. "Switching a driver and you still need to verify, doesn't that make us seem cowardly to the other party?"
"You're also a big shot with the boss, reeking of blood; stay away from me." Shuang Shuang was a very cautious man, never letting any suspicion slip by.
"No matter how bloody, it's just about using knives, compared to you using your brain, it's nothing."
"Team leader, the other party confirmed it, and apologized for not notifying us in advance." (To be continued. If you like this work, feel free to visit Qidian (qidian.com) to vote for recommendations and monthly tickets. Your support is my greatest motivation.)
