Soulbound: Chronicles Of A Shadow Assassin-Chapter 36: A Mystery
Surprise flashed in Jiang Yichen’s eyes—and that of everyone else present.
Lin Xiaoyan’s unlikely show of ruthlessness was puzzling that it made them wonder, ’Was there more to it than meets the eye?’
Jiang Yichen’s grip on Mingyu relaxed, and the latter slumped to the floor. With a look of desperation, Jiang Yichen crawled towards Lin Xiaoyan, his knees scraping against the ground. He bowed his head, pressing it to the floor in a profound gesture of supplication.
Lin Xiaoyan’s hardened gaze softened, his expression faltering in response as he was taken aback by Jiang Yichen willingly humbling himself.
"Please allow him be treated." Jiang Yichen begged, raising his head up to look into Lin Xiaoyan’s eyes. "Yinzhi only risked his life to do what I asked. We need to treat him at the infirmary to save his life—please."
Lin Xiaoyan locked eyes with Jiang Yichen, both of them engaged in a tense, unyielding stare.
The genuine desperation in Jiang Yichen’s eyes didn’t leave Lin Xiaoyan’s notice, and that further softened his heart— also annoying him at the same time.
Lin Xiaoyan couldn’t shake off the feeling that something about ’Yinzhi’ didn’t sit right with him. The arrogant glint in his eyes during the interrogation had sparked a sense of déjà vu, but he couldn’t quite grasp what or who exactly that look reminded him of, leaving him with an unsettling sense of mystery.
And now, Jiang Yichen, ever so stubborn, was kneeling before him for the sake of this same person. It irked him so bad. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝔀𝓮𝒃𝙣𝓸𝒗𝒆𝒍.𝙘𝒐𝒎
"Fine," Lin Xiaoyan spat, tearing his gaze away from Jiang Yichen’s face to glare at the two young men standing behind him. With a dismissive snort, he barked, "Take them both to the infirmary. I can’t even stand the sight of those two."
With that, he turned on his heel, storming off with an audible huff.
Jiang Yichen let out a soft sigh, his tense shoulders immediately relaxing in relief.
"Young Master, go on ahead. We will take Yinzhi to the infirmary." Madam Wang offered, but before she even finish her statement, Jiang Yichen was already by Mingyu’s side, gently lifting him up.
He shook Mingyu slightly, trying to keep him awake. "Yinzhi, stay with me," he urged softly, his voice a gentle comfort.
Mingyu’s eyes slowly opened halfway, his gaze locking onto Jiang Yichen’s.
But as their eyes met, Jiang Yichen’s body froze, his breath catching in his throat. Something was off. Mingyu’s left eye was its usual grey, but his right eye... Jiang Yichen’s heart skipped a beat as he stared into the familiar color of his right eye.
Jiang Yichen’s mind reeled as he stared at the right eye. It’s the same color as that of the real owner of this body–Yinzhi. His eyes widened in shock, his mouth hanging open in stunned bewilderment.
What was happening to Mingyu?
He immediately used his palm to shield Mingyu’s eyes. Fortunately, the others were standing behind him, so his back had prevented them from seeing Mingyu’s face.
"Let me take him." Feng Zhenyu was suddenly standing in front of him, bending down to take Mingyu from his hands.
Panicked, Jiang Yichen immediately swatted Feng Zhenyu’s hand away. "I-I can do that myself." He blurted, with his palm still over Mingyu’s eyes.
Feng Zhenyu looked at Jiang Yichen in confusion. "You can’t even walk properly. Just let me."
"No!" Jiang Yichen said, his voice coming out sharper than he intended. He just couldn’t risk letting them see Mingyu’s eyes, not even for a moment. "I can do it. He’s my servant, so I’ll take him there myself."
"But you are not well either. You can’t manage on your own." Madam Wang insisted, worry evident in her voice.
Jiang Yichen stayed silent for a moment, thinking of a solution. Mingyu needed to be attended to immediately, and If he insists on taking Mingyu to the infirmary himself, he was sure he wasn’t going to make it there without collapsing.
"Alright then." He said, finally making up his mind on what to do. He turned to face Madam Wang, "Carry him on your back."
Among the three, Madam Wang was Jiang Yichen’s safest bet. As the only ordinary human present, she didn’t possess any supernatural abilities that might allow her to detect the unusual change in Mingyu. Moreover, her poor eyesight made it even less likely for her to see the difference in Mingyu’s eye color—especially in the dark.
"Pardon?" Madam Wang chocked out, not sure if she had heard right.
"Carry him on your back." Jiang Yichen did her the favor of repeating his words.
"I should carry him on my back?" Madam Wang’s voice was laced with incredulity.
"Yes. We don’t have time." Jiang Yichen said as he got up on his feet, dragging Mingyu up, while still shielding his eyes. "Come here." He gently nudged her, making her bend forward.
"Little help, please." He said to Lin Xiaowei, who immediately assisted him without questioning him.
"Young master, are you sure?" Madam Wang was still talking when Mingyu was suddenly placed on her back, his weight knocking the air out of her lungs. "My goodness."
Only when he had secured Mingyu’s head in the nook of Madam Wang’s neck did Jiang Yichen finally remove his hand from Mingyu’s eyes. "Be careful with him, okay?"
"I’ll try." Madam Wang said with sarcasm, as she stumbled away with Mingyu on her back.
"And you." Jiang Yichen said, gesturing for Feng Zhenyu to come closer.
"Yes?" Feng Zhenyu moved closer to him.
Jiang Yichen placed his hand on Feng Zhenyu’s shoulder. "How about you help me instead of Yinzhi?"
"Sure." Feng Zhenyu answered and held Jiang Yichen’s hand that was over his shoulder, while also holding his waist with his other hand to help him walk.
But Jiang Yichen swatted his hand for the second time that night.
Feng Zhenyu was taken aback by Jiang Yichen’s action, but before he could react, Jiang Yichen had already gotten behind him and jumped onto his back, wrapping his arms around Feng Zhenyu’s neck, and settling into a comfortable piggyback position.
"I don’t have the strength to walk," Jiang Yichen whined, "Please take me to the infirmary."
Feng Zhenyu could only blink repeatedly, his gaze drifting to Lin Xiaowei in bemusement.
Wasn’t this the same person that had insisted on carrying his injured manservant all by himself to the infirmary?
