Sons of a devil-Chapter 56: After storm
Chapter 56 - After storm
Selene's eyes opened slowly, lashes fluttering like fallen leaves. The light filtering through the healer's hut window was soft—too soft for a world so cruel.
Her first instinct was to sit up, to move—but pain flared across her ribs like a brand. She gasped.
And then—
Cain's head snapped up from where he'd been dozing, still holding her hand.
"Selene," he breathed. "You're awake."
His voice was hoarse, eyes red-rimmed. He looked like he hadn't slept in years.
Selene gave him a lopsided smile. "You look like death."
Cain laughed—actual laughter, shaky and full of relief. "I nearly lost my heart, and you insult me first thing?"
She blinked. "You're my heart?"
He paused, eyes softening. "Yeah. Yeah, you are."
From the other side of the hut came Eren's voice: "Ugh, get a room. No—wait, stay in this room so we can keep watching you like hawks."
Leo peeked in holding a bowl of soup. "She's awake?"
"She's roasting me already," Cain said.
Eren raised a brow. "Good. That means she's healing. Roast the demon king next."
Selene let out a soft laugh and then winced, holding her side. "Okay—no laughing. Ow."
Cain helped her sit up slowly. "You scared the hell out of me."
"I'm kind of used to scaring people. Occupational hazard."
"Not funny."
"Kind of is."
Leo handed her the soup. "Eat. You need your strength. And we're low on sarcasm stock—refuel quickly."
She looked around. The brothers had set up camp in the healer's hut, scattered with bedrolls, blood-stained bandages, and half-eaten rations. Eren had carved something into the wooden table: No dying allowed, especially not Selene.
Her throat tightened.
"You all stayed here?" she asked.
Cain didn't even blink. "Where else would we go?"
Leo grinned. "You think we trust him to sit here brooding alone? No thanks. He might burn the hut down with his emotions."
Eren dramatically clutched his heart. "Selene, you almost died, and we had to eat Cain's cooking. That's a trauma we won't recover from."
Selene laughed again—then winced again.
Cain shot them a glare. "You two are actual children."
Eren wiggled his eyebrows. "You love us."
"Regrettably," Cain muttered.
Selene leaned her head against Cain's shoulder, eyes soft. "You never left."
"I wouldn't," he whispered, brushing her hair back. "I won't."
Outside, the storm had long passed. The sky was a clear canvas of morning blue. Birds chirped timidly in the distance. The forest seemed to sigh in relief.
Leo stepped out first, needing air. Eren followed, still muttering something about emergency pie rations and bad demon cooking.
Selene closed her eyes for a moment.
"Cain?"
"Yeah?"
"When I got hit, I wasn't scared of dying."
He tensed. "Why not?"
"I was scared of leaving you. Of not seeing your face again."

Cain's jaw tightened. "Then don't leave. Ever."
"I don't plan to."
He kissed her temple gently. "Good."
Then from outside—
"Leo just tried to climb a tree and fell like a sack of potatoes!" Eren howled.
A groan from Leo: "It was a tactical decision!"
Selene snorted. "I guess things really are back to normal."
Cain shook his head. "Unfortunately."
But as he held her close, heart steady and strong again, he realized: in this insane, dangerous, beautiful mess—they had found family.
And it was worth every storm.
