Chapter 376: Chapter 376: Resolving Danger

Afterward, another security guard found two people with tumors, and after consulting, they let them leave.

They were so occupied with these matters that night fell, and Gu Pan and the others didn’t return to the base. So, that evening, she and Lu Ruisheng invited Gu Ci and Chen Dasheng for some fine dining.

Feng Xuan, who had just arrived and was very weak, wasn’t suited to eat the heavy foods, and since it was more or less a shareholders’ dinner, it was inconvenient for Feng Xuan, so Gu Pan cooked a bowl of noodles for him with some meatballs and vegetables and had it sent over.

They dined on hotpot in Chen Dasheng’s room.

The hotpot ingredients were all semi-prepared by Gu Pan beforehand, and with vegetables from Entertainment City, they had plenty of options.

This meal left Gu Ci and Chen Dasheng extremely satisfied, nearly drinking up the broth from the pot, after which they collapsed onto Chen Dasheng’s bed, proclaiming they couldn’t get up due to being so full.

Having grown familiar with each other, Gu Ci let his formal demeanor slip, and Chen Dasheng turned kinder; Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng found these two quite amusing.

After the dishes were cleared, the four of them sat in the room talking.

Enviously, Chen Dasheng gazed at Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng, "If my wife were still alive, I’d have someone to depend on as well, I admire you two."

Listening to this, Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng could guess that Chen Dasheng’s wife must have been one of those who perished in the apocalypse, a topic truly beyond consolation, because everyone has their own pain, like their former lives.

Chen Dasheng continued, "She was pregnant when she died, seven months along. I went from the joy of being a father-to-be to having lost everything. Damn apocalypse, if it weren’t for that, my child would be in kindergarten now."

He spoke while gazing and picturing that scene which had appeared in his dreams countless times, when he and his wife had been looking at kindergartens and school district houses, dreaming about the future; if it were a daughter, then he’d work hard to save for her dowry, and if a son...

So much beauty, all devoured by the apocalypse.

Gu Pan felt a piercing heartache—the kind of feeling perhaps only those who had experienced it could understand.

She told Chen Dasheng, "In this era, dying first isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Life is so hard; if you had a child living through the apocalypse, never seeing the blue sky or peaceful world, would you consider them fortunate?"

Cheng Dasheng wiped his tears, "You’re right, that’s what I’ve always told myself. In such times, living isn’t happiness, but during the silent nights, I still think of them."

Gu Ci also sighed, "This type of apocalypse is never comfortable. Sometimes I wonder why I keep living? Living just to face disasters, then not knowing when one will take my life?"

Lu Ruisheng, too, expressed his sentiments, comforting them, "What if the apocalypse could pass? We could witness the world after the apocalypse for those who’ve died, at least we could remember those departed loved ones. Otherwise, who would remember them?"

Gu Ci agreed with Lu Ruisheng’s view, "I really do want to see when this damned apocalypse will end, what the world after will look like. That’s probably my biggest reason to keep living now."

"Everyone doesn’t need to be so pessimistic. We at least have connections, resources; we’re not lacking food or drink. People should always look on the bright side." Although Gu Pan felt these words were somewhat cliché, in such an atmosphere, it seemed that they indeed needed this kind of motivational pep talk.

Everyone felt the same, hating and despairing of the apocalypse, yet also holding onto some unwillingness to give up; in those moments, they encouraged each other, after all, they still needed to survive.

That night they talked a lot, until well into the night before they slept.

The weather the next day was exceptionally good; the outside was particularly clear, with puddles reflecting the sunlight, somewhat dazzling.

Some tender, green grass had sprouted on the ground, and even some trees far away had begun to show hints of green.

Gu Pan looked at the sky and sighed, "Who knows how long this weather will last."

Lu Ruisheng patted her head, "Getting used to such extreme weather, I dare not have any extravagant hopes."

Gu Ci saw them off, watching them leave before continuing to lead people in clearing the mud.

Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng took a bag of food from the Space in a secluded area, placed it at the back of their motorcycle, and brought it back to the base.

Xiao Lin was not there today, but the guards, who recognized them, greeted each other. After checking their items, they let them through.

Back at the base, they saw the residents again starting to build houses and repair public facilities. It was quite depressing; they didn’t know how many times they had repaired them already. Acid rain, hail, and torrential rain damaged the buildings every time.

The search and rescue at the apartment building had basically ended; there were no more signs of life, only the final wrap-up left. Honestly, this time didn’t seem like before the apocalypse; there was no need to continue rescuing now. If someone severely injured were rescued, they wouldn’t likely survive; not many could be as lucky as Chen Fengzhou, having medicine and people willing to treat him. If it weren’t for Wang Lijuan and Gu Pan, Chen Fengzhou would have probably been given up on without surgery.

Although it sounds cruel, the resources after the apocalypse are limited; no one who can’t work and might even be a burden would be continued to be treated without the support of relatives with resources.

After Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng returned, they divided the food into four portions and distributed it among the neighbors.

They always advocated for eating safely.

Now, the base’s water source was deep well water that had been treated and had to be boiled before use, so it was safe.

Later, the two changed into clean clothes and went to Lu Jianguo to discuss the tumors that had grown on people after eating mutated animals.

Arriving at Lu Jianguo’s office, he had just come back from a meeting. After entering, Lu Jianguo closed the door, "I have something to discuss with you both."

Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng sat down to listen to Lu Jianguo’s serious matters.

Lu Jianguo said, "The main base and our No.7 Base have proven through experiments that mutated plants don’t affect the human body. Plants are different from animals, so the base plans to start an experimental farm using the contaminated soil outside to grow sweet potatoes. However, these won’t be consumed now but will be dried and stored. If needed for relocation, it will serve as reserve food, and in the meantime, we can continue testing their effects on the human body."

Gu Pan didn’t understand much about these things, but she understood that the mutation of plants was harmless to humans.

Lu Jianguo looked at them and asked, "Did you see people who had eaten mutated animals outside?"

Lu Ruisheng recounted their experience in Entertainment City to Lu Jianguo, "At least for now, it seems non-contagious, but we cannot be certain, as some are transmitted through saliva or blood."

Lu Jianguo nodded, "The main base is conducting clinical trials, but there are no results yet."

The matter of the clinical trial was actually difficult to talk about, and there wasn’t much discussion on it.
