Chapter 71: Chapter 71: Friends First, Girlfriend Later

Evelyn stood still, watching Eleanor Keaton’s retreating figure. Her brows were tightly knit, her face unknowingly pale and frail, her delicate face full of sorrow.

Is Uncle getting married? 𝐟𝕣𝗲𝕖𝕨𝗲𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝗲𝚕.𝗰𝚘𝐦

True!

He’s already at that age, it’s time for him to marry!

Seeing the desolation in Evelyn’s eyes, Cecilia Lynch’s heart tightened again.

"Evelyn." Cecilia nudged her, "Don’t overthink it. His getting married is a good thing. Besides, you’ve always wanted to break free from him! Moreover, you and your big brother are already friends now, next you should work hard to become his girlfriend!"

Evelyn snapped back, her lips curving slightly upwards, "I wasn’t overthinking it! Cece, when it comes to Uncle, you become so sensitive! What really happened between you and Uncle?"

Cecilia shook her head.

There are some things she cannot say.

Evelyn sighed heavily. The secret between Cecilia and Uncle, who knows when it will be revealed.

Not wanting to see Cecilia’s overly apologetic expression, Evelyn changed the subject, smiling, "Come on! Let’s continue eating! There’s so much good food, let’s not waste it!"

She squinted her eyes and smiled, inadvertently looking out the window. Despite the clear and sunny weather, everything appeared gray and hazy for some reason.

Has the air quality in Atheria declined again recently?

So much smog!

After eating, Cecilia didn’t have much time to rest and had to rush to her next part-time job.

Seeing Cecilia so exhausted, Evelyn felt uneasy.

Yet she, as a friend, was overwhelmed herself, unsure how to help Cecilia.

Evelyn walked alone down the street, with a long time until her afternoon class.

Ever since parting with Cecilia, her chest felt stifled, as if a heavy stone weighed upon it, even making it hard to breathe, inexplicably making her irritable.

And what was she irritated about? She had no idea.

What’s going on?

Why was she feeling such strange emotions?

Just then, her phone rang. It was a call from Logan Shaw.

A glint of light flashed in her eyes as she quickly pressed the answer button.

"Evelyn, could I ask you for a favor?" Logan’s tone was restrained.

"Go ahead," Evelyn had no intention of refusing, "As long as it’s something I can help with, I definitely will!"

"I want..." After a brief hesitation, Logan continued, "I have a female friend whose birthday is approaching, and I want to give her a gift. But I’m worried my choice might not suit a woman’s taste, so, could you accompany me to buy it?"

Evelyn’s focus was on the words "female friend," feeling sour inside.

"I know, such a request is rather abrupt." Logan was embarrassed, "But among the women I can ask, aside from you, there’s no one else. If you’re not available..."

"No problem!" Evelyn promptly replied, "I’m the best at picking gifts! When are you free? I’ll take you to choose one!"

"Right now." Logan replied quickly, "Where are you? I’ll come pick you up."

After providing her location, Evelyn stood under a large tree. The sun blazed hot, but she didn’t care about whether she was hot or not.

A man choosing a birthday gift for a woman, and from Logan’s tone, he seemed to care a lot.

Is he picking it for someone he likes?

Not long ago, on her birthday, he hadn’t even said happy birthday, just booked a room at The Corsair Hotel for her and asked Aunt May to inform her that he’d cover all the expenses.

At that time, she naively thought he would come as well.

In the end, not even a "happy birthday" was heard.

Now, he was putting effort into preparing a gift for another woman.

This clearly showed, he wasn’t incapable of being romantic, she just wasn’t important to him.
