Chapter 41: 41 - Level 02

"Why was there conflict in the evolutions?" Lohan wondered, confused.

He opened the game menu without stopping the Kobold’s digestion.

[New Digested Matter — Incessant Hunger]

[Improves digestion, consuming nutrients from any food to increase strength, but greatly increases hunger.]

[Conflict with: Efficient Digestion]

[Unrelenting Hunger and Efficient Digestion have similar characteristics, attempting fusion... fusion unsuccessful, Unrelenting Hunger level too low.]

[No Evolution available.]

Reading the System’s warning logs, Lohan more or less understood what had happened.

Apparently, [Unrelenting Hunger] was a much inferior version of [Efficient Digestion], to the point that even merging the two skills didn’t work, something that would probably increase the level of [Efficient Digestion] just like when he ate other Slimes.

’What a pity... I thought I would get another useful skill... I wonder if the other Kobold will also yield nothing good for me?

Thinking about it, Lohan confirmed again that the second Kobold was also dead and began digestion.

At that point, the little white fox also approached, curious.

"Have you always had that camouflage skill?" she asked, looking at Lohan with sparkling eyes. "I don’t remember seeing you use it at any time."

"No, I just received this skill by digesting the Mana Stone that Aeliana gave me yesterday," Lohan explained.

This made the fox’s eyes sparkle even more. "Your skill acquisition speed is very high... even higher than mine."

Now it was Lohan’s turn to be curious. "Do you also get new skills constantly?"

The fox nodded. "Yes, but instead of getting my skills from other creatures, I need to control my Mana and Spirituality myself to create them."

"Create your skills? Based on your imagination?!" Lohan was stunned.

The possibility of Lisa acquiring new skills didn’t surprise him that much, after all, she was a legendary race, but to be able to do that based on her own imagination? How powerful was Elysium’s processing power to allow something like that? One must take into account that Lisa is not the only one with Legendary Races or Classes, just imagining all the Legendaries creating skills as they pleased was frightening.

Lisa nodded. "The potential of this body is very high, and added to the high Spiritual Affinity, it’s not that surprising. Soon you will discover that this world is much more surprising than you imagine."

After that conversation, Lohan focused on finishing digesting the Kobolds, and Lisa stepped away to rest for a while.

Without Lisa knowing, she described [Pigmentation Mimicry] correctly as a Skill, which for her didn’t make much difference, but for Lohan was a very important factor.

Unlike the [Reinforced Exoskeleton] that was unlocked for Lohan as a separate evolution, where he could invest Biomass at will to evolve further, [Pigmentation Mimicry] did not have this option, being considered by the game system as a Magic Skill, just like Ice Spike.

That’s why he had to deactivate this Skill right after the battle, because instead of consuming Biomass to work, like his evolutions, this Skill spent Mana.

This could be both good and bad.

On the one hand, an Evolution had infinite potential without the need for training. Lohan could invest a million Biomass in an Evolution and it would level up without any bottlenecks.

On the other hand, as long as he evolved his [Magic Core], increasing the available Mana, he could improve these skills without spending a single Biomass point on them individually.

If he had twenty Magic Skills, a single evolution point in the [Magic Core] would increase the potential of all twenty Magic Skills.

There were pros and cons, and Lohan liked the variety it brought, not making him dependent on just a single resource or a single way to progress.

-xXx-

Although the battle seemed long, it was only ten minutes. Lohan didn’t even intend to completely digest the bodies of these monsters, just enough to recover his Mana and the Biomass he lost from the blow the Kobold dealt to his clone.

[Body Density Lv 5 → Lv 6]

Upon digesting part of the second dead Kobold, Lohan finally received notification of a successful evolution.

Even though he hadn’t received anything new, just having a free evolution was already very good.

When he recovered, Lisa repeated the process, attracting two more Kobolds, and Lohan neutralized them both, this time much more easily.

His clone was also able to use [Pigmentation Mimicry], so setting up a trap with Lisa attracting them, the Clone distracting them, and Lohan ambushing them was very easy and effective.

Every 10 minutes, a new group of Kobolds arrived, Lohan killed them, received the experience, and rested.

Lisa didn’t gain anything in this process, but she didn’t mind. With Lohan leveling up, they would soon be able to go to other areas and hunt higher-level monsters, where she would participate in the battle and also receive experience.

With a Legendary and a Mythical creature fighting together, she was confident that she would make up for lost time here. 𝚏𝐫𝚎𝗲𝕨𝐞𝐛𝕟𝚘𝐯𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝗺

Lohan also didn’t let the Biomass he earned accumulate indefinitely.

Realizing that his greatest weakness was speed, something that was constantly hindering him in battles, Lohan purchased two more evolutions in this area.

[Viscous Flow Lv 12 → Lv 13]

With that, his speed rose from 0.67 m/s to 0.81 m/s.

He was still far from the ideal speed to face such a monster head-on with ease, but this increase of more than 20% in his initial speed was already a great help.

And he didn’t intend to stop there, even though the price for evolving this skill was getting high, now costing 19.48 Bio to upgrade to Lv 14. Lohan still intended to invest in it even more, at least until he reached a speed of 1 meter per second.

After that, the price would be so high that he would need hours of grinding to accumulate enough biomass, and that wouldn’t be worth it for now.

A little over an hour after they started, the notification Lohan had been longing to hear finally arrived.

[Experience: +6]

[Experience: 102/100]

[Level Up?]

Looking at that, his eyes sparkled.

Without hesitation, Lohan agreed.

Then a refreshing wave passed through his body, nourishing his jelly, making it denser, the membrane more resistant, even slightly accelerating the base digestion speed by +1 Bio/h.

It was as if he had undergone a complete evolution in his Slime’s base characteristics!

[Name: Halon

Race: Slime (Mythical)

Class: Devourer (Mythical)

Level: 02

Experience: 2 / 200

Mana: 19.9 / 19.9]

Looking at the Status screen, he realized that nothing but his level had changed, even though he felt more powerful, not even his Mana had increased.

Confused, he asked those who had experience with both.

"Why does my status remain the same?" He asked Lisa.

"Status? Oh, status is just a representation of your strength. When you level up, your skills get slightly stronger, but you have to feel that change for yourself," she said casually.

Lohan heard that and analyzed himself again.

It was really like she said, when he leveled up, he became stronger as a whole, but only his basic natural Slime characteristics.

The external skills he received from other monsters remained the same.

But that wasn’t a problem. Just increasing his Base Biomass digestion speed by 1 Bio/h, disregarding the other evolutions, was already a big help.

With the extra Biomass he would receive from that, he could buy other evolutions over time.

But at the end of the night, both Lohan and Lisa were satisfied.

Before logging off, Lohan asked her to take him back to the previous location so that the next day he could meet Aeliana without having to roll for two hours, which Lisa agreed to, despite still being a little shy about this type of contact.

As he took the Elysium helmet off his head, Lohan felt much more positive about this life.

Killing monsters while chatting with a friend was the dream he had always had in the other world, especially seeing how streamers and other players enjoyed doing it.

Being able to do something like this in person was incredible.

"I think I was really getting lonely."

Thinking about how many people he would interact with in the future, and that perhaps the possibility of paying off his debt was getting closer and closer, he became even more excited.

So much so that he bent down on the floor and did a few more exercises before going to sleep, without noticing the changes in his body.
