Chapter 55: Chapter 55: I’ve Decided to Divorce Ethan Yardley

Raina had only been back at the family estate for a short while when Ethan Yardley got a call from there.

On the phone, Master Yardley yelled furiously, "Ethan Yardley, get over here with your wife, right now. Immediately."

Before Ethan Yardley could even say a word, the line went dead.

Ethan Yardley sat in his study, his face dark with displeasure.

But in the end, he got up and walked toward Serena Yardley’s room.

This time, she had the sense not to lock the door from the inside.

Ethan Yardley pushed the door open and found her curled up on the floor again, hugging her knees. The small, huddled figure gave off an inexplicable air of loneliness and sorrow.

He walked over to stand before her, looming over her. His voice was magnetic yet cold. "Get up. Change your clothes and come with me to the family estate."

Serena Yardley didn’t move.

Ethan Yardley grew impatient. "Are you deaf, or do I have to make you?"

Left with no choice, Serena Yardley got to her feet. Without sparing the man a single glance, she turned and went into the walk-in closet to change.

As she followed Ethan Yardley downstairs, she saw Sylvia Schuyler sitting in the living room again. Her heart clenched without warning, and she quickly averted her gaze, heading straight for the front door.

Seeing Ethan Yardley come down with Serena Yardley, Sylvia Schuyler rose to meet them. "Ethan, where are you two going?"

"We’re heading to the family estate for a bit. You stay here. If we’re not back late, just go to bed early."

Sylvia Schuyler pressed, "Did something happen?"

"I don’t know."

Ethan Yardley didn’t elaborate. Seeing that Serena was already out the door, he strode after her.

Outside, Yannick Young already had the car ready.

Serena Yardley deliberately took the front passenger seat.

Ethan Yardley walked up and saw what she did. An inexplicable bitterness welled in his chest.

Despite his discomfort, he said nothing more. Once he was in the car, Yannick Young drove directly toward the family estate.

The car was dead silent the entire way.

The crushing silence was strangely suffocating.

Yet, no one uttered a word.

Upon arriving at Yardley Manor, Serena Yardley paid the man beside her no mind, walking straight into the mansion.

It was eight o’clock at night.

No one at the family estate had gone to bed. Knowing the Young Master and Young Madam had returned, a crowd of servants gathered enthusiastically to welcome them.

"Welcome home, Young Madam, Young Master."

Serena Yardley gave them a slight nod and walked straight inside.

Four people were seated in the spacious and luxurious drawing room.

They were Master Yardley, Raina, and Mason Yardley with his wife, Sophia Quinn.

Master Yardley’s face was stern and grim. His imposing, authoritative presence made the air in the drawing room feel heavy, and no one dared to speak.

Raina, who had been nestled in Master Yardley’s arms, saw Serena Yardley approaching from a distance and quickly ran over to her.

"Serena!"

Taking Serena Yardley’s hand, Raina looked up at her and said, "I told Dad to stand up for you. He’s going to teach Ethan a good lesson."

With that, Raina pulled Serena Yardley in front of Master Yardley and complained:

"Dad, just ask Serena! Ethan is always bullying her, and he brought another woman home! That woman even hit me before! Dad, you have to stand up for me and Serena!"

Having had a daughter late in life, Master Yardley doted on his youngest child immensely.

Taking his daughter’s small hand, Master Yardley looked at Serena Yardley and asked, "What is going on? Tell me everything, truthfully."

Serena Yardley first greeted her father-in-law, mother-in-law, and Master Yardley before lowering her head and saying:

"I don’t know how to explain it to you. You should just ask him."

She deflected the question to Ethan Yardley, who had just walked in.

Master Yardley didn’t press Serena Yardley. His face grim, he glared at Ethan Yardley. "Did you bring another woman home?"

Ethan Yardley was completely unfazed by his elders.

He stood ramrod straight, making no attempt to hide the truth. "It was Sylvia Schuyler."

The moment they heard the name Sylvia Schuyler, the expressions of Mr. and Mrs. Yardley and Master Yardley changed drastically.

Sophia Quinn immediately asked, "Sylvia Schuyler is back? Hasn’t she been living abroad for years after immigrating?"

"What is she doing back here?" Mason Yardley asked.

Ethan Yardley glanced at the petite Serena Yardley standing before him and said lazily, "Do you even have to ask?"

"Is she here to make you take responsibility?" Sophia Quinn guessed.

Master Yardley immediately snapped, "What responsibility? We compensated the Schuyler Family with a fortune back then. What more responsibility could there be?"

Ethan Yardley fell silent.

’From a humanitarian standpoint, I should be responsible.’

Master Yardley knew his grandson’s temperament; the boy had his own set of principles.

’But that Schuyler girl can no longer have children. How could she possibly continue the Yardley family line?’

Master Yardley turned to Serena Yardley. "Child, don’t blame Ethan. He was in a car accident years ago and hit her, causing her to become infertile. She’s been holding onto him because of it ever since.

"Rest assured, as long as we’re here, no one can shake your position. But there’s one condition: you must bear a child for the Yardley family within two years.

"Do you understand?"

Serena Yardley stood rooted to the spot, her head bowed. ’So the whole family knew about Sylvia Schuyler all along.’

’But Sylvia Schuyler’s appearance isn’t the problem anymore.’

’It’s the problem between me and him.’

She lifted her head to look at the old man before her, then at her in-laws beside him. A pang of bitterness shot through her as she spoke:

"Grandpa, Mom, Dad... thank you for accepting me into this family, and thank you for being so patient with me.

"I suppose I’m just not meant to be part of this family. I’ve already decided... I want to divorce Ethan Yardley. I hope you’ll grant my request."

"What did you say?"

Her words stunned everyone in the room.

Behind her, the color drained from Ethan Yardley’s face. His thin lips pressed into a hard line, and his fists clenched at his sides.

His eyes, which looked like they could shoot daggers, fixed on Serena Yardley as he seethed with a gut-wrenching anger.

’Divorce again. What right does she have to even mention it?’

’If the elders weren’t here, I’d teach her a lesson she wouldn’t forget.’

"Serena, are you asking for a divorce from Ethan just because of Sylvia Schuyler?"

Sophia Quinn asked, having recovered from the shock.

Serena Yardley looked at her mother-in-law and explained, "Actually, Ethan and I have been hiding something from you. From the very beginning, our marriage was just a fake—"

"Serena Yardley."

Ethan Yardley cut Serena Yardley off. He yanked her toward him and glared, hissing, "Do you even know how to speak? If not, then shut your mouth."

Then, turning back to the elders, Ethan Yardley declared, "Fine. Two years. We’ll give you a child."

The elders breathed a sigh of relief, but they still eyed the young couple in front of them with suspicion.

They couldn’t shake the feeling that the two were hiding something else from them.

Serena Yardley whipped her head around to look at Ethan Yardley, completely baffled by his actions.

’Doesn’t he think I betrayed him?!’

’So what is this about giving the elders a child?!’

’Or is it that he just wants to use me as a tool to have a baby, and once the child is born, he’ll discard me and marry Sylvia Schuyler?’

’Impossible.’

’I, Serena Yardley, will absolutely not be used to bear a child for someone else, only to be cast aside.’

"We’re heading back now,"

Not wanting to worry the elders any further, Ethan Yardley began to drag Serena Yardley away.

Sophia Quinn suddenly called out, "Wait."

The pair stopped in their tracks.

Sophia Quinn came forward. "Ethan, you go and talk with your grandfather. I’d like to speak with Serena alone."

Ethan Yardley looked at Serena Yardley, his gaze a clear warning not to say the wrong thing.

"Let’s go, Serena. Come have a chat with me over there."

Sophia Quinn turned and walked away. Not knowing what her mother-in-law wanted to discuss, Serena Yardley had no choice but to follow.

Left with no other option, Ethan Yardley went back and sat down.

Of course, this meant he would inevitably face another scolding from his father and grandfather.

...

In a smaller sitting room, Sophia Quinn pulled Serena Yardley down to sit beside her. Despite being the poised and elegant matriarch of a wealthy family, she had a very kind and amiable air about her.

She began to speak to Serena Yardley with earnest patience:
