Chapter 34: Chapter 34: Let Me Hold You for a While

Serena had planned to call a rideshare to pick them up.

But just as Raina Yardley pulled her out the door, she spotted a black sedan parked outside the courtyard.

And standing beside the car was Gabriel Galloway.

Serena stopped in her tracks, not wanting to go any further.

But the little girl beside her laughed and ran ahead. "Uncle, you’re here so fast! You can be our driver today."

Gabriel ruffled the child’s hair, then opened the car door. "Alright, I’ll be your driver. Hop in."

Seeing Serena hadn’t moved, Gabriel smiled, his expression as gentle as a spring breeze. "What’s wrong? Afraid I’m going to eat you?"

Serena’s eyes darted away, and she sounded a little flustered. "Don’t... don’t you have anything better to do?"

"Nope."

Gabriel closed the back door and walked over to the front passenger side, pulling the door open for her.

"The more you avoid me, the more suspicious you’ll make other people. Besides, there’s really nothing between us, so what are you afraid of?"

’He has a point,’ Serena thought.

’I have nothing to hide. What is there to be afraid of?’

She didn’t want to sit in the front, so she opened the rear door herself.

And yet!

Just as she drew near Gabriel, he suddenly leaned in and whispered in her ear, his voice low enough for only the two of them to hear:

"Don’t worry, I won’t interfere in your life. As long as you’re happy, that’s all that matters."

Though his voice was low and deep, his impossibly handsome face was lit with a brilliant smile.

He looked bright and charming, completely harmless.

Serena didn’t dare to look at him for too long and quickly slipped into the car.

Gabriel closed the door and soon drove off.

The three of them got out at a famous food street in the city center.

From there, they spent their time with Raina, strolling, eating, and playing along the way.

Due to her pregnancy, there were many things Serena couldn’t eat.

But whenever Gabriel bought something, he always bought two.

He had just bought two milk teas and offered one to Serena.

Serena shook her head, declining. "I’m not a big fan of these drinks."

"Is it that you don’t like them, or that you won’t drink one I bought?"

Gabriel feigned a hurt expression. "Are you that afraid of having anything to do with me?"

Serena was about to explain when she suddenly noticed a man in black not far away, staring in their direction.

She quickly looked away and alerted Gabriel, "I think someone’s following us. That man in black, up ahead to the right."

Gabriel heard her and looked over.

As expected, he saw a familiar face.

His elegant, handsome face instantly turned cold. He warned Serena, who was beside him.

"They’re here for me. Take Raina and go home. I’m going to go have a chat with them."

Before Serena could react, Gabriel shoved the pile of snacks he had just bought into her arms and hurried away.

Serena opened her mouth to call out, but when she saw the man in black leave right after Gabriel, she hurried forward and grabbed Raina.

"Auntie, let’s go."

Raina looked curious. "What’s wrong? I’m not done exploring yet."

"We’ll explore over there."

"Okay!"

Raina skipped along after Serena.

As she continued to walk around with Raina, Serena kept a wary eye on her surroundings.

She only relaxed after she could no longer see the man in black.

’Was that man in black really here for Gabriel?’

Feeling it had nothing to do with her, Serena didn’t dwell on it.

After a full day of playing outside with Raina, the two of them took a cab home in the afternoon.

When they got home and out of the car, Raina tugged on Serena’s arm.

"Serena, don’t you tell Ethan that we went out for snacks today. If he tells my mom, I’m going to get in trouble."

Serena nodded conspiratorially. "Okay, I won’t say a word."

"Will you take me out again tomorrow, then?"

Serena smiled back. "Mhm."

"Hee hee, thanks, Serena! I knew you were nice."

Walking into the courtyard, Raina yawned. "I’m so sleepy. I’m going to take a nap. Don’t wake me for dinner."

Before Serena could answer, Raina darted into the house and scampered upstairs.

She always took an afternoon nap.

She hadn’t napped today, so now she was exhausted.

Serena glanced at the time. It was six in the evening.

"Uncle" wasn’t back yet, so she sat on the living room sofa to read.

But she hadn’t even gotten into her book when she heard a noise at the door.

She looked up...

...to see "Uncle," standing tall and elegant in his suit, walking in with a bouquet of flowers in one arm and a cake box in the other hand.

Serena stared at him, stunned.

The man looked back at her, his expression gentle, and strode closer.

He stood before her, his tall frame towering over her, and offered her the flowers and cake. "For you."

Serena suddenly felt a little shy.

’I can’t believe he bought me flowers and cake on his way home from work.’

’Is this his way of making peace? Of acting like what happened before never happened?’

Serena didn’t dare to be difficult and refuse, and she certainly didn’t dare to start another fight with him.

She took them with a soft, "Thank you, Uncle."

"Mhm. I’m going to get changed. Where’s Raina?"

He unbuttoned his suit jacket, ready to head upstairs.

Serena said, "She’s sleeping in her room."

"Well, if you’re not busy, come help me scrub my back."

Serena put down the flowers and the cake and slowly followed after Ethan.

Ethan noticed how she had suddenly become quiet and reserved, and he reached out to pinch her plump little cheek.

"Don’t look so melancholy. You’re making it seem like I’m forcing you to do something you don’t want to. The Serena I know is very clingy."

The tips of Serena’s ears grew hot.

She took a deep breath and said with a slight pout, "As long as you’re not mean to me, Uncle, I’m happy."

Besides, now that he wasn’t letting Sylvia Schuyler come over anymore, she truly didn’t feel so upset.

"I haven’t been mean to you today, have I?" Ethan asked, watching her.

’I even bought you flowers and a cake to apologize.’

Serena straightened her back, squared her shoulders, and darted into the bathroom ahead of Ethan. "I’ll go run the bath."

Ethan’s sharp brows rose slightly, but he let her be. 𝚏𝕣𝐞𝗲𝐰𝕖𝐛𝐧𝕠𝕧𝚎𝚕.𝐜𝚘𝗺

’Sure enough,’ he thought, ’when Serena isn’t fighting with me, I don’t feel so stifled.’

Serena filled the tub, and after testing the water temperature, she went to the walk-in closet to get a change of clothes for "Uncle."

When everything was ready, she saw him standing by the bed, taking off his clothes. She stood nearby and asked, "Uncle, it’s ready. Do you really want me to scrub your back?"

Ethan stripped down to his boxers.

His long legs, solid chest, and sexy abs were on full display before her.

The sight made her blood rush and her hormones run wild.

Ethan walked over to her, bent down to get close to her flushed face, and teased,

"What’s wrong? Still blushing?"

Serena took a deep breath and retorted stubbornly, "Who’s blushing? It’s not like I’ve never seen you like this before."

"Then why are you shy?"

"I’m not shy! Are you getting in the bath or not?"

She pushed the bathroom door open, pouting as she glared at him.

Ethan pressed his lips into a light smile and walked into the bathroom. "Of course I am. Why wouldn’t I, when I have a free back-scrubber?"

...

’So I’m just a back-scrubber to him?’

’Fine. Then I’ll scrub him raw.’

Serena put on the exfoliating gloves. Once she saw him settle into the tub, she applied some body wash and moved behind him, ready to torture him with a vicious scrubbing.

But just as she was about to, the man suddenly grabbed her hand, pulling her whole body into the tub with him.

Serena was still fully clothed, and the sudden plunge left her soaked to the skin.

She struggled to sit up, yelling, "What are you doing?! I’ve already bathed!"

Ethan held her in his arms, nuzzling into her neck and whispering,

"Bathe with me again. Or... just let me hold you for a bit. I’ll hold you for a while, then you can go change, and I’ll wash by myself."
