Chapter 146: The First Boss

This monster that came out this time didn’t rush like the first one. Instead, it hopped out slowly, looking around for targets. It was a rabbit the size of a human, with dark gray fur that seemed to absorb what little light there was. Its teeth were oversized and razor-sharp, and its claws looked capable of shredding armor.

Everyone got ready to fight.

Lucille looked at it for a moment, nodded thoughtfully and turned to Jax. "1 minute. Go."

Jax smirked. "You got it, leader."

He approached the rabbit cautiously, walking as far in as he could before the creature noticed him. The moment it did, he pounced on it, charging at it.

The rabbit hopped, coming for him, but when it was in range, Jax was ready for it.

Jax’s Divine Threads spell activated, creating brown strands around the rabbit. The creature tried to dodge, but the threads were too fast and too numerous. Within moments, it was completely wrapped, bound to the ground before him.

Jax pulled his axe back and swung it down in a powerful arc toward the creature’s neck. As the weapon moved, the Spell stone embedded within it activated, and a ghostly image of the axe followed behind the real one.

The first strike bit deep into the rabbit’s neck, and the ghostly axe’s strike cleaved completely through.

The rabbit died instantly, its body going limp in the threads’ embrace.

Jax was a little taken aback. He had expected it to be easy to kill the beast, but this was perhaps too easy. Having improved his Navi stage to 1st Emerald Stage, not only had his physical strength improved, but also the strength of his Navi.

Adding onto that all the special skills he had to fortify both his body and his weapon made killing the beast rather easy.

Of course, the fact that the monster also let him hit it in the neck played for killing it in one strike.

Jax turned back toward the timer display and watched as it reset to one minute. "Round 3" appeared above it.

He took the 5 stones that appeared where the rabbit disappeared and walked back.

"Woah!" Roman said as he watched Jax get close. He had seen Jax fight many times, but never had he won against anything this easily.

"Good job. That was faster than we could have expected," Lucille said. She turned toward the timer and said, "Let’s all fight this one. I don’t want the rest of us growing duller by the second because we aren’t doing anything."

They waited until the timer came to an end and then the next monster came.

It was a snake this time, green in color with somewhat translucent scales. They fought the snake with the entire party, taking their time killing it. Jax and Ning let the others handle it, allowing Melayne to make a few slices with her runic flame sword before she killed it at last.

Roman and Lucille aided her from the back. Once the snake was dead, they waited for the next monster to come out.

Round 4 came and they fought again. Then the next round came and they killed it easily too. Sometimes Ning fought the monster by itself, sometimes Jax and Roman took charge of one together. Sometimes, they fought it as a party.

Killing these monsters was little to no trouble for a party full of stronger fighters in the 1st Emerald stage. They killed all the monsters easily, arriving at the 10th Round.

The timer for the 10th round started at 2 minutes, unlike all other rounds before.

As the timer for Round 10 began its countdown, the atmosphere in the arena shifted.

"The boss is coming next," Jax said.

"I wonder what it will be."

The others shared Ning’s curiosity.

""I’ll use my analysis spell this time," Lucille said.

The rest of the party was preparing as well. Jax and Ning had set aside their earlier casual approach and were now strapping on their armor. This wasn’t a fight they could hold back on .

"Roman, stay in the center," Lucille instructed. "We’ll form a circle around you."

Roman nodded, understanding his role. He was the support member of their team, but also the most vulnerable in direct combat.

The countdown came to an end, and Round 10 began

They looked in all four directions, looking for where the monster would come out from.

"There!" Ning called out, pointing toward the gate he was facing. Everyone turned to look in that direction. Lucille used her spell, but she didn’t have to. Melayne or Jax could tell her what it was.

It was a clouded leopard, with fur that held a metallic sheen to it. The creature was massive and domineering. It moved slowly, encircling the party as if they were prey rather than enemies.

The moment they saw it clearly, both Jax and Melayne reacted simultaneously.

"Iron Leopard!" they exclaimed in unison.

The others turned to look at them with surprise. While Lucy and Ning hadn’t seen this particular monster before, they knew the name. It was one of the three boss monsters of the Oak Valley forest, the region where they had spent so much time hunting and training.

"So, this is what it looks like," Ning said, turning his head toward Lucille. "How do you suggest we fight?"

"We’ll be in trouble if it has its Needle Fur spell," Melayne said, frowning. "Protect your head if it looks like its fur is standing on its end."

"What other spells?" Ning asked quickly.

"Uhh..." Melayne froze.

"Metal body," Jax answered in her absence. "That or Blade Resistance. It takes less damage from either bludgeoning sources or slashing sources."

"Give me a moment," Lucille said. "I’ll tell you which one it is."

Her spell was still taking a minute to activate.

The boss slowly walked toward them, as it did, its furs began moving.

"Oh... no," Melayne said slowly.

They didn’t need Lucille’s help. It was clear the Leopard had spawned with Needle Fur, its most annoying spell.
