Chapter 84: Selling

The registration didn’t take long once we used Devoa. A trace of my Essence was drained and inserted into the crystal connected to the Hunter tag.

"The registration is complete. Please keep the Hunter tag on you at all times," the elven receptionist said, placing the tag on the counter with one hand and holding out the other. "That will be 20 copper."

20...copper? I had to pay to register at a place I did not necessarily want to be part of. That did not only sound like a scam, it was one.

"Damn, a hoax." I blurted out, which earned a chortle from one of the Hunters. The elven man glared at me in the meantime.

"If you do not have the money, I can open a tab for you. The registration fee will be deducted from your future transactions."

What even was I supposed to say to that?

"Let’s do that then." A heavy sigh escaped my lips. "I would like to sell a few monster carcasses."

"Right, you wanted to sell carcasses from Eserian monsters." The elven receptionist nodded as if he just remembered, but I did not think he forgot even for a heartbeat.

"Please follow me to the back."

I did as requested and walked through the door in the back into yet another room. It was larger than expected. From the outside, it certainly did not look that big.

"Spatial distortion. You know what that is, right?" the elf said when he saw the look on my face. He motioned to my bracelet.

"I don’t know how it works, but that’s not what you’re asking about."

"Even I do not know the exact details," he responded after a moment.

"Do you wish for me to scan the bracelet’s content or do you want to retrieve the corpses you wish to sell?"

What I did not want was to remove the seal on the bracelet. No one was to see the Nature Dragon mother’s scale or some of the other things I managed to store in there. They were nobody’s business.

"I would like to retrieve the carcasses if that’s okay," I responded.

"Of course, sir." The elf bowed before pulling a lever I hadn’t noticed before. The room rumbled and shifted a moment later. It expanded, transforming into a large butchery. A cold, metal table the size of my old room appeared before my eyes.

"Impressed? That is but one of many magical devices created by the greatest of the Huntrice’s minds." The elf bragged, like he built the device himself.

I didn’t respond but instead retrieved a few carcasses. First, the Bloodfist Gorilla, the Onyx Panther, then a few dozen Skaborn Salamander corpses, a few Skunkita, a few Venus Ocelot carcasses and–

"Could you stop for a moment, sir? We do not have enough space to accommodate any more carcasses." The elf intercepted, his eyes narrowed at the remains of the Skaborn Salamanders. We found a lot of salamanders on our way to the Forea Alliance, and, as it turned out, they were fairly good to experiment with. Brutal, sure, but efficient.

"I have a lot more though." I couldn’t help but narrow my eyes at him. The Huntrice had to be better than that. After all, Jer told me, I expected a better...financial situation from them. "Several Silverback Elephants, two Armorous Ankylosaur, a Gale Wolf, a Karus, and a bunch of monsters my comrades helped kill."

"H-helped?" Now it was the elf’s turn to narrow his eyes at me. "Are you telling me you killed a Karus and a Gale Wolf by yourself? That is hard to believe. We are talking about a monster and a monstrosity at the 2nd Tier."

"Does it really matter to you?" I thought. Was that how things would turn out? "The Karus was weakened by my comrades for me to kill, for an experiment, if you must know. The Gale Wolf–no, that doesn’t matter. It does not concern you." I shook my head and gestured back at the carcasses sprawled all over the cold metal table.

"The Huntrice can afford to purchase them, can it not? If not, where can I find merchants with the chips needed to buy Silverback Elephants and other carcasses from me?"

"Sir!" The elf waved his hand vigorously. "You must have misunderstood me. The Huntrice is one of the wealthiest organizations in all of the Forea Alliance. We can afford to buy everything from you." He was starting to look nervous, which was nice to look at, honestly. "I was just curious and didn’t act as professional as I should have. I apologize!"

Now I felt bad. Dismissing his apology with a wave, I asked: "I was told the Huntrice makes fair prices. I hope that’s true, because if I find out that you’re taking advantage of me, I won’t use the Huntrice to sell my goods anymore."

The elf looked genuinely offended at my insinuation. "The Huntrice is the fairest of all trading companies. You won’t find anyone with better prices across the board. Sure, some valuables may be better off sold at an auction, but if you sell a variety of goods, you will find out that the Huntrice has the best prices!"

That was good enough for me. I motioned the elf to approach the table and he started analyzing the carcasses. He retrieved a set of glasses that was etched with complex filigree lines. They glowed and seemed to help him price the carcasses.

"I will store them momentarily. If you are not satisfied with the pricing, I will return the goods." The elf said before retrieving a pouch. The moment he opened it, a strong suction force enveloped me. It embraced me momentarily before rushing past me. A moment later, the corpses on the table disappeared.

"Please retrieve the remaining carcasses."

So I did. I retrieved the remaining carcasses, feeling quite good about myself. How could I not knowing I was about to earn a small fortune.

Then again...what even was I supposed to do with that fortune?
