Chapter 50 -50: Could it be that He Cares About Her?
Xiang Ying heard Jie Chen’s voice growing louder behind her.
“Pull the reins! Xiang Ying, stop chasing!”
How could Xiang Ying stop when the horse was so close?
The supplies being pulled by the horse could feed ten people for three days.
Xiang Ying would never allow supplies to be wasted before her eyes.
She sped up her whipping, and when she was parallel to the chestnut horse, Xiang Ying fiercely leapt over.
She thought she had grabbed the reins, but the heavy rain made her palms slippery and in an instant, half of Xiang Ying’s body was hanging over the horse’s belly.
Only her legs were firmly stepping on the stirrups.
If she had any less strength, she would definitely have fallen and been dragged by the horse.
Seeing this from behind, Jie Chen yelled out, “Hold on tight! Don’t let go!”
He hurriedly chased after her, but by then Xiang Ying had already swung herself back onto the horse’s back by inertia.
A dagger had appeared in her hand at some point, and she swiftly cut off the tether around the horse’s neck.
The wooden cart tipped over as a result, and Xiang Ying was able to pull the reins tight, causing the horse to lift its hooves high, its neighs echoing through the mountains alongside startling thunder.
By the time Jie Chen arrived, Xiang Ying had already stopped the horse.
She was steadying the overturned wooden cart, moving bags of white flour back onto it.
She shook her head in distress over two spilled bags.
“What a pity!”
Though she had plenty of space, she still treasured every bit of supplies.
Those who had lived through the apocalypse knew the value of food and did not want to waste any.
Suddenly, a pair of strong hands clamped down on her slender shoulders.
“If you want to die, just say so! If you dare to act recklessly like this again, you can roll out of the team!”
Xiang Ying looked up with her Phoenix Eyes, and through the pouring rain, she saw Jie Chen completely drenched, rainwater mixed with a faint crimson streaming down his pale jawbone.
“Your wound has opened again.” Xiang Ying tried to remove his mask but was pushed away by Jie Chen’s backhand.
With an imposing aura, Jie Chen turned his back, tying the reins of the two horses together as if afraid she would run off again.
Xiang Ying didn’t expect him to lash out so fiercely.
Was it because he cared about her? That seemed impossible, as they had no emotional ties.
“Don’t be angry, I was just trying to save the supplies.”
“You are just a criminal, unable to even ensure your own safety, let alone manage these surplus concerns.”
Jie Chen’s words were too cold, and Xiang Ying grew angry as well: “Why don’t you appreciate what you have? You don’t need to be antagonistic. After all, I’m not hurt, am I?”
Hearing this, Jie Chen turned to look at her.
The thin pupils under his mask, stained by blood, appeared gloomy and cold.
“Have you ever thought that this was just luck? Do you think you’ll always be this lucky? If you died, what would happen to the three children? After becoming prisoners of a fallen country and then losing their mother who can protect them, have you ever considered their fate?”
Xiang Ying was startled.
Jie Chen’s anger was actually for the children.
If he wasn’t sure the child was his, he wouldn’t care so much, would he?
Xiang Ying, accustomed to being on her own and having carried out even more dangerous missions, naturally had the courage.
Rain tapped heavily upon them, and silence filled the air between the two until Xiang Ying let out a long sigh from her red lips.
“I understand now, I won’t act so recklessly next time.”
As if.
She needed to calm down the currently irate man first.
Jie Chen ignored her and tied the horses together, intending to take her back with him.
No one noticed that the wooden cart, having just been righted by Xiang Ying, began to slowly slide downhill due to the excessive weight of the rice and flour it carried.
As the wheels started to roll, the hem of Xiang Ying’s trailing skirt got tangled within.
After securing several horses, Jie Chen turned back and stretched out a hand to Xiang Ying: “Come here, let’s go.”
Xiang Ying wiped the rain off her face: “Are you sure you don’t need me to look at your eye first?”
“No need.” Jie Chen was especially indifferent.
Just as Xiang Ying was about to place her hand in his, a sudden strong pulling force from behind rapidly dragged her down.

“Hisss!” Xiang Ying groaned in pain as she hit her head on the ground, seeing stars.
Jie Chen’s eyes shifted, and he quickly stepped forward to catch her, but alas, the wooden cart, dragging Xiang Ying down the steep mountain slope, picked up speed, and he grasped at thin air.
“Xiang Ying!” He didn’t hesitate, lunging forward to grab her hand; both were dragged rapidly across the ground by the wooden cart.
Jie Chen used his feet to push against the ground and forcefully embraced Xiang Ying.
At this point, Xiang Ying was already dazed to the point of nausea by the stones protruding from the ground.
Jie Chen held her tight, pulled out his long sword, and slashed off the skirt hem tangled in the wheel.
However, they were now being carried down an extremely long slope.
Jie Chen protected Xiang Ying’s head as they rolled and tumbled until Xiang Ying felt a lurch in her stomach, followed by a heavy splash into water.
With a splashing sound, darkness enveloped her vision, and the rushing water soon knocked her unconscious.
After who knows how long.
Xiang Ying opened her heavy eyelids, instantly feeling a sharp pain in her head.
Damn it, those falls were no joke; she couldn’t have a mild concussion, could she?
The sound of a match striking and burning came from nearby.
Her blurry, exhausted Phoenix Eyes moved, and she saw they were in a cave; Jie Chen, with broad shoulders and a slim waist, was shirtless, with his back to her, poking at a fire.
Her clothes were hung to dry over a wooden rack nearby.
Xiang Ying propped herself up to sit, the clothes covering her falling away.
Jie Chen turned around at the sound, his handsome and cold face unmasked, with dark sword-shaped eyebrows merging into his hairline and his thin eyes brimming with chilling coldness.
A flicker of unease crossed his gaze, and he stepped forward to drape the fallen clothes back over Xiang Ying.
“Get dressed.”
Xiang Ying looked down to see she was almost stripped, with her clothes drying on the rack, leaving her only in her undershirt.
She glanced outside; the sky was still dark but couldn’t hear rain anymore.
“Where have we fallen to?” Her voice was hoarse.
“We fell from the mountain slope and drifted along the river for about an hour; we must be quite far from the team by now.”
He said this without any sign of panic.
Xiang Ying wasn’t flustered either, murmuring, “Has the rain stopped? Let’s head back now.”
“Let’s wait for daylight; it’s too hard to see at night.”
Xiang Ying noticed the white puffiness around his eyelid, a sign of water irritation.
She was about to express concern for his injury when he handed her the water skin.
“Drink some.” His words were succinct.
Xiang Ying hesitated: “This is the only thing you have left, right? There isn’t much water, we should share it.”
Jie Chen cut to the chase, “I’m not thirsty.”
Xiang Ying took it, sipping carefully.
Following this, the two fell into a prolonged silence.
She leaned against the cave wall; he tended to the fire, occasionally rubbing his brow bone.
It must be the spot on his eyelid that hurt, but he certainly wouldn’t let her see it.
Xiang Ying decided to make conversation.
“Why did you think to rescue me? You must harbor quite some resentment against me in your heart, right?”
Jie Chen’s profile was cold as was his voice: “I saved you to prevent the child from losing its mother.”
Xiang Ying snorted internally.
Naive man, he still doesn’t know whether the child is his!
In the original owner’s memories, there was barely any impression left by Jie Chen, probably because there were too many captive beauties around.
It made it hard for Xiang Ying to recall anything between them now.
Seeing Jie Chen rub his forehead again, Xiang Ying quietly closed her eyes and entered her space.
She wrapped a few clusters of Medicinal Herb, wet the brocade bag with water, and when she opened her eyes again, the brocade bag was clenched in her palm.
Pretending to just notice, she exclaimed with surprise: “Ah, we’re so lucky, the medicine I prepared for treating eye injuries didn’t get lost.”
Unexpectedly, Jie Chen looked over, his long eyebrows slightly furrowed.
After a moment of silence, he asked: “I removed your clothes, so how come I didn’t see the medicine bag?”
Xiang Ying’s smile froze on her lips.
Damn, she had forgotten about that.
