The next morning, Mira woke up at eight in the morning, had a quick breakfast, and went straight to her research room.

There, she continued her research mindlessly, not thinking about anything else. She had tried to experiment from time to time during her travels, but so far, this was her first opportunity to really sit down and do anything she wanted, so there was a constant influx of new ideas.

「So if I do this, I can increase the range of Sense Sync…」

「Hmmm… So the Spirit King is having an effect here too…」

「I see… So all of those limits had been put in place by the previous system…」

「If this works out, then I can just…」

「I see, so Armor Spirits can also…」

「Ohh, I hadn’t thought of this…」

Mira conducted countless experiments, and the results or lack thereof informed her of what to try out next.

She completely lost track of time as she did that, but eventually someone gently roused her back to reality. It was Mariana, who entered the room with Luna to advise her to not push herself too much, essentially repeating what Mira had told Creos the night before. That was also a reminder to return to the living room to eat something, after which she played with Luna and talked to Mariana for a while longer before going back to continue her research.

Then, by the time it was around eight in the night, she went out with Creos to watch him train again.

Partially Summoning a Dark Knight was a difficult technique, but Creos was still the person trusted by the tower’s Wiseman, so he was quickly making progress, and after this session, he really felt like he was seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.

He then asked for Mira to accompany him again the next day, and he returned to his room. Mira felt reassured seeing how quickly he was progressing too, and she headed to take a bath, where she was accompanied by Mariana and Luna, creating a comforting and delightful time for her.

After the bath, she once again had sweets instead of dinner, talked with Mariana for a bit, and headed to bed.

That routine continued for a couple of days, with little making one day stand out from the rest. But Mira did not feel bored from it, quite the opposite, she felt like those had been the most fruitful days for her.

As she looked at Mariana and Luna sleeping next to her, she began to think that if happiness had a physical form, it was shaped like those close to her.

The next morning, the routine finally broke, as she went to visit Arkite Academy together with Creos. The Academy’s spell examination was being conducted that day, which was an event in which Mira had taken place once in the past.

(I heard things changed a lot since that time. I wonder what’s going to happen.)

In the past, that event was mostly centered around showing off one’s spells, but this time, the jury was going to evaluate the practicality in actual combat. 𝔯𝐚Ŋo͍ᛒË𝐒

Today, Mira was going to be part of the audience instead of a participant too, so she was looking forward to seeing what the summoner students would do.

The event started and the various students representing the different classes performed the spells they had practiced. Mira noticed another difference there, seeing three students of each class, instead of just one.

Creos explained to her that they made that change to give more students a chance to shine, while also making sure that there was plenty of variety of spells.

When there was just one participant per class, if they showed a powerful spell, then everyone would try to copy it and harm the diversity of spells used by others. So, they now picked three students who specialized in different branches of spells.

Overall, it had become a much more meaningful event, even if the participants still looked like complete beginners compared to someone like Mira. Still, their dedication and passion to become stronger was clear, and it reminded her of her own ambitions.

(I also have to keep working so I don’t fall behind.)

Mira was burning with motivation as she watched the various students perform. The last few days she had just been researching spells that could stand alongside those she already knew, but it was about time she aimed higher and tried to find more powerful ones.

As those thoughts circled her head, it was finally the turn for the summoner students.

「Ohh, I’ve seen that girl.」

The first student to step forward was a girl with blonde twin tails. She was the same girl who had been staring intently at Mira when she was crossing through the Academy to the orphanage.

Back then, Mira had already felt like she had seen that girl somewhere in the past, so she asked Creos about the girl.

「Oh, her…」

Since it was Mira asking, Creos did not hesitate to tell her everything, even if usually that would mean divulging the personal details of a student.

Her name was Emilia, and she was the third daughter of the Flores family, which was a noble house in Ozstein. She was still fourteen years old, but was one of the best summoner students, which was obvious as she had been selected to perform for the event.

「Ohh, the daughter of a noble. I see…」

Mira felt like that explained the arrogant air that seemed to surround that girl all the time. That was mostly born from the stereotypes in her mind, but it was also true that Emilia seemed to behave in that way.

But what Creos said next completely changed that. Her personality was almost opposite to that appearance, as she was extremely studious and hardworking, with a strong sense of righteousness.

「And more importantly, she’s also the leader of that group of fans of Danbulf that I mentioned before.」

「Is she now?!」

Mira quickly recalled what Creos was referring to. Creos had told her about a student who would constantly pick fights with students from other classes whenever they made fun of Danbulf. That student had been none other than Emilia.

And almost on cue, the spell Emilia was demonstrating was also Danbulf’s signature simultaneous summoning of Dark Knights.

Almost all stories involving Danbulf mentioned how he could summon upwards of a thousand Dark Knights in an instant, which was also why they called him Danbulf the Army. That was also what inspired Emilia to constantly practice that.

「Ohoh, and she just learned how to do it recently? It takes quite some skill to summon just two at once, mhm, I can see a bright future for her.」

Mira’s initial impression of her being an arrogant and cheeky girl had vanished, and instead she was fully in support of Emilia, almost cheering her on like a parent.

It was true that Emilia was skilled. Even if it took her some time to get everything ready, the fact that she had actually summoned two Dark Knights at the same time was impressive in itself.

All summoners had a limit of how many summons they could have active at once. Simultaneous summoning would force multiple summons of the same type into the same slot, providing an advantage in numbers while also leaving the other slots free for more summons.

A student who was still learning would probably have three slots at best, meaning that if they summoned three Dark Knights the normal way, they would not be able to summon anything else. But if simultaneous summoning was used, then all three Dark Knights would be stuffed into a single slot, and the summoner would have two free ones, allowing for more tactical use of more summons.

Mira began to wonder if there was anything she could teach to that student who was trying to follow her footsteps, so she carefully examined the two Dark Knights Emilia had summoned, checking how the spell had been constructed and the flow of mana.

The spell examination concluded without incident, and the jury gathered to decide how to rank each class. Mira was also allowed to be present while that happened.

In the end, the top spot was taken by the Saint Class, and summoners were sixth.

Emilia’s simultaneous summoning had not been seen as something too impressive. On a technical level, it was a big achievement for someone her age, but she had failed to show the advantages it brought to a fight.

Mira felt like that was a fair assessment, as the scoring system had been modified to reflect the practical use of the spells demonstrated. Things would have been different if Emilia had made proper use of her remaining free slots to set up an advanced battle formation.
