Chapter 36: Chapter 36: Unabashed Intimacy

Wren Sutton’s back stiffened. She turned to meet Adrian Lancaster’s dark, profound eyes.

She honestly couldn’t tell if he was joking or being serious.

"I haven’t seen my in-laws in a while. No time like the present. Let’s go now."

Wren Sutton’s brows furrowed slightly. Still unable to figure him out, she asked, "Are you serious?"

"Why else do you think I had the driver pull the car in?"

"..."

Ignoring Wren Sutton’s thoughts on the matter, Adrian Lancaster instructed the driver to take the gift boxes out of the trunk.

Wren Sutton was astonished. "When did you prepare all this?"

Adrian Lancaster: "Today."

He had originally planned to come to the Sutton Family’s home today to pick up Wren Sutton, then take her to Lucia Lancaster’s new villa tomorrow.

Wren Sutton froze, lost in thought.

’Adrian Lancaster actually came prepared?!’

’In other words, even if we hadn’t run into each other at the mall intersection today, he still would have come to the Suttons’ to visit my parents?’

Before Wren Sutton could snap out of her daze, Adrian Lancaster wrapped an arm around her waist and helped her out of the car.

She didn’t have time to struggle before he gripped her hand tightly, leading her inside as casually as if he were returning to his own home.

Wren Sutton was in a difficult position and had no choice but to play along with Adrian Lancaster.

’Strange. I’m just going back to my own home, so why am I a little nervous?’

"Don’t say anything reckless when you see my parents in a bit," she warned in a low voice.

Adrian Lancaster lowered his gaze, his expression unreadable. "It seems you’ve been bad-mouthing me to your parents these past few days. Afraid I’ll expose you?"

Wren Sutton immediately retorted, "I have not."

On the contrary, she had said nothing but good things, painting Adrian Lancaster as the model modern husband so her parents wouldn’t suspect her marriage was in trouble.

Adrian Lancaster’s Adam’s apple bobbed, and a careless smile played on his lips. "So you’ve been praising me, then."

’In your dreams,’ Wren Sutton thought.

"I haven’t been doing that, either."

She turned her head away, a hint of petulance in her gesture.

Adrian Lancaster wasn’t the least bit angry. Instead, he felt an indescribable sensation and tightened his grip on Wren Sutton’s hand.

Her hand was still so smooth, so small. He could completely envelop it with one of his.

When the two of them entered, Mr. and Mrs. Sutton’s faces lit up with pleasant surprise.

Adrian Lancaster was impeccably well-mannered, politely greeting the two elders.

"Dad, Mom, I should have come sooner. Work has been busy lately, so it’s been delayed until now. I hope you can understand."

The driver set down the gift boxes and discreetly took his leave.

Mr. Sutton smiled benevolently. "Now you’re sounding like a stranger. We’re family, there’s no need to be so formal. Have a seat. I’ll go to the kitchen and add a few more dishes so we can all have dinner together."

Mrs. Sutton followed him to the kitchen to help. The old couple was so happy they couldn’t stop grinning.

Adrian Lancaster stepped into the living room.

While the Sutton home wasn’t a villa, it was decorated with immense style. The elegant and grand Chinese design was understated and reserved, hinting at a scholarly family background through its subtle, cultured details.

Wren Sutton took the initiative to pour Adrian Lancaster a glass of warm water.

"It’s late, so I won’t make tea."

"Mm."

Adrian Lancaster sat like a gentleman, unbuttoning his suit jacket with one hand before picking up the glass and taking a sip of water.

They were such simple, everyday actions, yet when he did them, they felt different from anyone else. Beyond being easy on the eyes, he possessed a natural, innate nobility and grace.

Wren Sutton had never denied it: Adrian Lancaster was exceptionally handsome, had a remarkable presence, and was a man of noble standing and great wealth. He checked every box on a woman’s aesthetic list.

If he hadn’t betrayed their marriage, she wouldn’t have been able to bring herself to divorce him. 𝗳𝗿𝐞𝕖𝘄𝗲𝕓𝗻𝚘𝚟𝕖𝐥.𝚌𝕠𝕞

’But alas, there are no what-ifs...’

No matter how much she craved or missed Adrian Lancaster’s handsome face, she could never accept his tainted body and heart.

"What are you thinking about?"

Adrian Lancaster’s voice broke through Wren Sutton’s thoughts.

His gaze was heavy as he watched her, like a predator eyeing its prey.

Wren Sutton snapped back to reality and avoided his overly intense gaze. "Nothing."

’It must be my imagination, right?’

She thought she saw a deep affection in Adrian Lancaster’s eyes, an intensity that was startling.

"Then why don’t you dare to look me in the eye?" Adrian Lancaster’s tone was intriguing.

"It’s not that I don’t dare. Wouldn’t you find it strange if I just stared at you?"

"No."

"..."

"Only people with a guilty conscience can’t look someone in the eye."

Wren Sutton grew a little irritated. She lifted her head to look at Adrian Lancaster, to prove she had nothing to feel guilty about. "My conscience is clear."

"Is that so?" Adrian Lancaster raised a brow casually. "Are you really sure you’re not hiding anything from me?"

Wren Sutton’s heart skipped a beat. The more she listened, the more something felt wrong. ’Could it be...’

’Impossible!’

’Even though Adrian Lancaster signed the divorce papers, the documents are in my possession, hidden in a place he would never think of. There’s no way he could have seen them already.’

’He must be talking about something else.’

"I don’t know what you’re talking about."

The two of them sat facing each other.

Adrian Lancaster caught the flicker of panic in Wren Sutton’s eyes. The man’s well-defined fingers tapped on his knee.

A moment later, he stood up, walked around the coffee table, and came to stand behind Wren Sutton.

He placed his left hand on her shoulder, applying just enough pressure, while his other hand gently massaged her earlobe in an unreservedly intimate gesture.

Wren Sutton shuddered violently, the tickling sensation sending a tingle through her entire body.

Before she had a chance to pull away, she felt Adrian Lancaster’s warm breath by her ear. "It was just a car. If you burned it, you burned it. Was it worth hiding from me for so long over that?"

Wren Sutton’s mind went blank with a BUZZ.

Adrian Lancaster knew she’d burned the Iceberry Powder car.

Only she and Isla had been there at the time. There was no third person, and there was absolutely no way Isla would have told anyone.

"How did you know?"

"That’s my business."

"..." Wren Sutton pressed her lips together tightly.

"In the future, whatever you want or don’t want, just tell me directly. Don’t do stupid things like setting fires. You could have gotten yourself killed. What would be the point of that, hmm?"

Wren Sutton was fuming and had to get it off her chest.

She refused to believe Adrian Lancaster didn’t know why she had burned that car.

"That Iceberry Powder car was never meant for..."

Just then, Mrs. Sutton came out of the kitchen carrying a dish. "Dinner’s ready!"

Adrian Lancaster smoothly released Wren Sutton’s earlobe, took her hand, and led her to the dining room.

Mr. and Mrs. Sutton had seen the two of them talking so affectionately. As people with life experience, they knew what was going on.

The parents were happy as long as the young couple’s relationship was good. They wouldn’t pry into other matters, especially business-related ones.

Mr. Sutton took out an unopened bottle of Maotai, wanting to have a couple of drinks with Adrian Lancaster.

Adrian Lancaster looked at Wren Sutton, seeking her opinion. "Honey, I’m going to have a drink with Dad."

Wren Sutton found the word "honey" incredibly awkward, hypocritical, and sappy. It gave her goosebumps all over.

But she couldn’t just expose Adrian Lancaster’s true colors at the dinner table.

"Go ahead and drink."

’He has a driver anyway. Someone will take him home after dinner, so I don’t have to worry about it.’

Although the meal Mr. and Mrs. Sutton cooked wasn’t a lavish feast, it looked, smelled, and tasted wonderful—every bit as good as a restaurant’s.

Adrian Lancaster enjoyed every single dish, showing great respect for his in-laws.

During the meal, besides clinking glasses with his father-in-law, he also remembered to put food on his wife’s plate and chat with his mother-in-law.

He was attentive to every detail, charming and tactful with everyone.

The four of them sat around the dining table, creating a warm family atmosphere filled with conversation and laughter. The meal didn’t end until very late.

Mr. Sutton had a bit too much to drink and went to his room to rest.

Mrs. Sutton glanced at the time. "It’s so late, Adrian. Why don’t you just stay here tonight?"

"Alright." Adrian Lancaster agreed readily.

Wren Sutton glared at him, furious and anxious.

’Who gave him permission to agree?’

"Nina, help Adrian to the room to rest for a bit. I’ll go make some soup to help him sober up."

"..."

Wren Sutton had no choice but to suppress her anger and help Adrian Lancaster into the bedroom.

"Adrian Lancaster, who told you you could ag—"

Before she could finish her question, her vision suddenly went dark as the man pinned her against the door.

Adrian Lancaster’s scorching breath washed over her neck as he held her tightly, as if he wanted to crush her into his body.
