Secretly Married for 4 Years, He Regrets to Tears After the Divorce-Chapter 19: She Looks Like She’s About to Cry
Wren shut her eyes and lunged forward. The sharp pain she expected never came. Instead, her forehead met something warm, like the palm of a hand.
Finding it unbelievable, she slowly raised her head, her gaze crashing directly into Adrian’s deep, dark eyes. Although he had blocked the sharp corner of the desk for her, Wren felt no gratitude, only anger.
Things were about to be resolved, and now he had to show up and ruin everything!
"What do you think you’re doing?" The man’s low, displeased voice came from above her.
Wren was bent over, the full view of her chest exposed to his gaze. It rose and fell with each breath, exuding a fatal allure. Moreover, the position of her face was incredibly delicate, aimed right at his...
Adrian’s stomach clenched, his eyes turning dark and unreadable.
Wren had long forgotten she was dressed so femininely today and didn’t notice the change in Adrian Lancaster’s expression. She straightened up awkwardly and saw a cake box in his hand. Inside was an exquisite, beautiful strawberry cake.
No doubt he bought it for Maya Marshall. So thoughtful. He knows how to appease a woman with a little cake.
"Who told you to come here?" Adrian turned sideways, his brow furrowed and his tone frigid.
"I..." Wren snapped out of her thoughts, but was cut off by Maya Marshall the moment she started to speak.
"Adrian, Wren was trying to force me to forgive Isla Griffith. When I refused, she lunged for the desk, planning to threaten me with her own death! Thank goodness you came back in time. Otherwise, even the Siltflow River couldn’t wash me clean of this."
As she finished speaking, tears streamed down her face and she began to cry.
Wren: "..."
What a waste of talent for this woman not to be an actress.
Adrian glared at her. "Playing the victim?"
Her plan had been interrupted, which already left Wren deeply displeased. Now, being maliciously framed by Maya Marshall, even her good temper had its limits.
"If I said I wasn’t doing it willingly, would you believe me?"
Her words were pointed, but Adrian pretended not to understand. He coldly averted his gaze, set down the cake, and went over to comfort Maya Marshall. "Don’t be afraid. No one dares to threaten you."
Wren couldn’t help but roll her eyes. "I wasn’t threatening anyone."
"Then who were you putting on this self-pity act for? Using weakness to bully the strong, and you say that’s not a threat?" Adrian shot back.
A wave of resentment built up in Wren’s chest, a bitter, acidic feeling that felt like it would corrode her from the inside out.
Adrian Lancaster, as always, refused to believe her. No matter how she humbled herself, how she trampled her own dignity underfoot, he remained unmoved.
’o much for the bond between husband and wife.
Wren gave a pained smile, fighting to keep her tears from falling. "Adrian Lancaster, I’m asking you one last time. Will you drop the case and let my best friend go, or not?"
Adrian could see she was on the verge of tears, but he didn’t soften. He was holding a grudge of his own. "No."
Wren took a deep breath and slowly exhaled.
First, the courtesy, then the conflict. Since talking nicely didn’t work, she guess it’s time to throw caution to the wind.
"Since you’re so heartless, then I don’t need to worry about saving face for you or the company anymore."
Hearing her loaded words, Adrian’s dark eyes narrowed, a hint of danger in them. "What are you planning to do?"
Wren turned her back to him, collecting her thoughts.
"The reason Kevin Dawson has been on a business trip for so long is because he’s overseas negotiating a project for you. This project will determine whether The Lancaster Group can monopolize the entire European market, so there can be no mistakes.
"From what I understand, these foreigners you’re doing business with place a high value on a partner’s marital fidelity.
"If, at this critical final stage, they were to find out that the president of The Lancaster Group—that is, you—has such a... colorful private life, would they still choose to partner with The Lancaster Group?"
After speaking, she turned back around to face Adrian, her gaze meeting his, neither servile nor overbearing.
He had been planning that project for two years, investing a great deal of energy into it. The essence of a businessman is the pursuit of profit; she didn’t believe Adrian would be willing to give up the entire European market.
The air was thick with invisible smoke, ready to ignite at any moment.
Adrian wasn’t the least bit flustered. He watched her calmly. "You think you can ruin my plans? You’re too naive."
Wren was unfazed and pressed her attack.
"The only reason you’re so confident is because those foreigners don’t know you’re married, and Kevin Dawson won’t say a word.
"But I have a way to let them know you’re married. It’s simple. I just have to post our marriage certificate online, and the whole world will know the secret you’ve hidden for four years.
"And when that happens..."
Wren trailed off, her gaze shifting to Maya Marshall, her presence completely overwhelming her.
Maya Marshall felt a surge of panic.
For years, she had dared to cling to Adrian Lancaster so shamelessly in large part because his marriage to Wren Sutton was a secret. No one knew she was the other woman.
Once the marriage certificate was exposed, her disgraceful role would be revealed as well. Then, Isla Griffith hitting her would be seen as a righteous act. The entire nature of the incident would change, becoming unfavorable for her.
Adrian stood up, suppressing his fury. His composure was cracking. "Wren Sutton, you wouldn’t dare."
To think she’d come up with a plan to kill two birds with one stone.
"Why wouldn’t I dare? You two are the ones who forced me down this path. If you don’t drop the case, then we’ll all go down together."
With that, Wren walked out of the hospital room without a backward glance.
Maya Marshall was in a complete panic. "Adrian, just agree to her terms! When she gets crazy like this, she’s capable of anything."
Adrian hesitated. "But the injury on your head..."
"The doctor said it’s nothing serious. If your business suffers because of me, I’ll blame myself for the rest of my life," Maya Marshall said softly.
Adrian made the difficult decision. "You’ve been wronged."
Maya Marshall shook her head gently. "Just hearing you say that makes it all worth it."
...
Wren went to the restroom to freshen up, using a wet wipe to clean the dust from her forehead. Looking at her reflection in the mirror, she was filled with mixed emotions.
If Adrian Lancaster had been there, would he have let me kneel and kowtow to Maya Marshall?
He probably would have.
Wren was lost in thought.
A moment later, her phone rang. It was Adrian Lancaster. She snapped back to reality and quickly answered the call.
"Where are you?"
Wren ignored his question. "Just tell me your decision. Are you dropping the case or not?"
"Let’s talk in person," Adrian’s voice was low and commanding.
"There’s nothing to talk about. I’ve already made myself clear. As long as you drop the case, I won’t do anything. The company’s interests and Maya Marshall’s reputation can both be saved."
"We’ll talk in person. I’m waiting for you in the hospital parking lot."
Before Wren could refuse, Adrian hung up.
This man... how can he be so tyrannical!
Wren furiously put her phone away and reluctantly headed to the parking lot.
Adrian’s car was parked in a conspicuous spot; she saw it from a distance.
The car horn blared.
"What’s the rush," Wren muttered, deliberately walking even slower just to spite him.
Watching her slow pace, Adrian gave a frustrated laugh and pushed open his car door to get out. "Do I need to come over and invite you?"
Wren looked up. Their eyes met from about ten meters away. She had been distracted and hadn’t heard him clearly. "What did you say?"
Adrian walked over silently and, without a word, swept Wren into his arms.
It was a sudden princess carry; Wren was completely unprepared. By the time she reacted, she couldn’t struggle free.
"What the hell is wrong with you now?"
Adrian glanced down at her. "You were walking so slowly. Isn’t this what you wanted?"
Wren was about to faint from anger. But it was only a few steps to the car, so she couldn’t be bothered to argue with him.
After they got in the car, they both sat in silence for a long time. 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝘦𝓌𝑒𝑏𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝘭.𝒸𝘰𝑚
Suddenly, the car window rolled down. Adrian lit a cigarette, holding it between his well-defined fingers. He took a single drag before resting his hand on the outside of the window.
"Go for the kill, strike where it hurts most. You’re better at finding leverage than I am. I admit defeat."
