Adrian whipped his head around, his eyes filled with murderous rage.

Isla Griffith was defiant, completely unafraid. "You can stop glaring. Do your worst, kill me for all I care. I’m not afraid. And I’ll say it again: I’ll hit her every single time I see her.

"It takes two to tango in an affair. Maya Marshall is shameless, but you’re no better. You’re a scumbag who betrayed your marriage. You don’t deserve my best friend at all."

The words hung in the air, irreversible. Wren quickly grabbed Isla Griffith, shaking her head. "Alright, that’s enough."

Angering Adrian would not end well. She couldn’t let her best friend take that risk.

To appease Adrian’s anger, Wren immediately apologized to both him and Maya Marshall, promising to cover all the medical expenses.

Adrian was unmoved, dead set on punishing Isla Griffith. "If apologies were enough, we wouldn’t need police. She’s going to jail. I’ll see to it."

Wren could tell from the look in Adrian’s eyes that he wasn’t joking.

With his power and influence in Aston, it wouldn’t be hard for him to send Isla Griffith to prison.

This was all because of her; she couldn’t just stand by and do nothing.

Wren shielded her best friend behind her. "Isla acted on impulse. She didn’t do it on purpose. If you’re angry, take it out on me. I’ll take full responsibility."

A chill fell over Adrian’s features. "I’m afraid you can’t afford the consequences."

"I can. As long as it appeases you, I’ll do anything you ask," Wren said, her tone brave and determined.

"I disagree." Isla Griffith protested, stepping out from behind Wren. "I’ll take responsibility for my own actions. This has nothing to do with my best friend. I’m the one who hit her, and I’m not trying to run from it."

"Don’t be a hero. This whole thing started because of me, so I should be the one to take responsibility. You need to leave, right now. Don’t worry about me," Wren said, frantically signaling to Isla with her eyes.

As long as she could protect her best friend, she was willing to accept any punishment.

She was the daughter-in-law of the Lancaster family. No matter how much Adrian disliked her, he wouldn’t go too far for his grandmother’s sake.

The matriarch was Wren’s only trump card. If he pushed her into a corner, she would ask the old woman for help. She was sure his grandmother would help her.

But Isla Griffith was stubborn and wouldn’t leave.

Wren grew frantic and started pushing her toward the mall entrance. "If you don’t leave right now, our friendship is over! Now go!"

"..."

Isla was torn. She couldn’t bear the thought of dragging Wren into this, but she also couldn’t stand to lose her as a friend.

Just then, the mall manager rushed to the jewelry section with several security guards.

The manager recognized Adrian immediately. After his initial shock, he began to fawn over him, trying his best to curry favor.

After getting a rough idea of the situation, he immediately ordered the guards to detain Wren and Isla and prevent them from leaving.

"Please rest assured, President Lancaster. I’ll make sure you get a satisfactory resolution to this matter. Whether you want to call the police or handle it privately is entirely up to you. For now, let’s get Ms. Marshall to the first-aid station to have her wound dressed and prevent infection." 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝙚𝔀𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝒐𝒎

With a taut expression, Adrian scooped up Maya Marshall. "To the first-aid station first."

"Of course," the manager said, personally leading the way.

Adrian took a few steps, then suddenly stopped and glanced back.

"The one in the pink dress didn’t hit anyone. Let her go. The other one is the real culprit."

The manager, ever obedient, ordered his guards to release her.

Isla was forcibly taken to the security office. Four guards stood watch at the door. Without an order from Adrian Lancaster, no one dared let her go.

Wren was barred from entering. Frantic, she paced back and forth in the hallway. A moment later, she took out her phone, forcing herself to remain calm as she sent Isla a text. "Don’t worry. I’ll find a way to get you out."

The situation isn’t irreversible yet. If Adrian would just relent, this whole problem could be solved easily.

After sending the message, Wren turned and went to find Adrian.

Inside the first-aid station, a doctor was carefully treating Maya Marshall’s wound, not daring to show the slightest negligence.

Adrian stayed by her side the entire time, holding her cold, trembling hand. "Don’t be afraid. It’ll be over soon. I promise I’ll find something so it won’t leave a scar."

Maya Marshall bit her lip and nodded, tears streaming down her face.

The manager stood to one side, watching their expressions, ready to be of service at a moment’s notice, the very picture of a fawning lackey.

Just as Wren pushed the door open, the doctor finished applying the bandage. Maya Marshall was leaning against the headboard, clutching Adrian’s arm and refusing to let go.

Hearing the door open, the manager turned and snapped, his brow furrowed, "Who let you in? Get out!"

Wren ignored him and walked straight inside.

"Are you deaf? I told you to get out! Don’t you understand what I’m saying?"

Wren refused to indulge him. "You’re the one who should get out."

"You—" The manager was furious and raised a hand to strike her.

Wren didn’t flinch, just stared at him coldly.

"I am Adrian Lancaster’s wife."

The manager’s eyes went wide. He immediately lowered his hand, his heart suddenly racing with panic. Once he composed himself, he glanced back at Adrian Lancaster.

Adrian’s expression was dark and displeased, but he didn’t deny her statement.

Not denying it was as good as admitting it. The manager understood everything in an instant.

"President Lancaster, we’ll wait outside. Just call if you need anything."

With that, he dragged the doctor out with him.

Now, only three people remained in the first-aid station.

Wren got straight to the point. She walked forward and gave Maya Marshall a deep, ninety-degree bow. If she wanted Adrian to change his mind, Maya Marshall’s reaction was key.

"Ms. Marshall, I’m so sorry. On behalf of my best friend, I’m begging you to forgive her. She knows she was wrong."

She was being as humble and sincere as possible, doing her best to show deference.

Maya Marshall was secretly seething. It was the first time in her entire life anyone had ever laid a hand on her, let alone drawn blood. Not only had she been utterly humiliated, but her head was still throbbing. What if there were lasting complications?!

There was no way she could let this go. She was going to make that bitch Isla Griffith pay.

"You don’t have to apologize for anyone. You’re not the one who hit me. I know who’s responsible, and this has nothing to do with you. I won’t cause you any trouble."

Wren had been prepared for this before she came in. She knew it wouldn’t be easy to resolve, but she wasn’t going to give up easily either.

"Nobody’s perfect, and everyone makes mistakes. Please, Ms. Marshall, be the bigger person and find it in your heart to forgive my friend. I’ll pay for her mistake."

"It’s not your place to pay for what Isla Griffith did," Adrian cut in, his tone cold, hard, and final. "The fact is, Isla Griffith assaulted someone intentionally. As I said, she’s going to prison."

This was exactly what Wren was afraid of. Once Isla had a criminal record, her acting career would be over. It would even affect her marriage prospects. She couldn’t let her best friend’s life be tainted by such a huge stain.

"Isn’t prison a little too harsh?" Wren ventured, trying to reason with him. "After all... Ms. Marshall is safe now. Her life wasn’t in danger."

Adrian shot down her foolish hope. "Who told you it has to be life-threatening to land you in prison?"

"But—" Wren started, wanting to try one more time.

Maya Marshall clapped her hands over her ears, her expression pained and weak, and took the opportunity to lean against Adrian Lancaster’s chest. "Adrian, can you take me to the hospital? My head is killing me. It feels like it’s going to explode."

"Alright."

Adrian lifted Maya Marshall into his arms and started to walk out. As he passed Wren Sutton, he didn’t even spare her a glance.

Wren followed them to the door. "Wait, I’m not finished! Please, for my sake, don’t involve the police. I’m begging you, Adrian."

In four years of marriage, it was the first time she had ever begged him. Her voice trembled slightly.

"You’re not that important."

Leaving her with that cold, heartless refusal, Adrian walked away without a backward glance.

Maya Marshall glanced back over her shoulder, her eyes full of provocation, a smug, victorious smile playing on her lips.
